Munya – Hotel Delmano
Do you like French pop music like Air and Charlotte Gainsbourg? Montreal-based singer, songwriter and producer Josianne Boivin, aka Munya, certainly does. She’s classically trained in piano, jazz, and opera, and combines her extensive musical education and Francophilia into atmospheric synth-pop that simultaneously feels nostalgic and modern. Call her a romantic retro-futurist.
Her next EP (out on 5 October) is called Delmano, and it’s named after Hotel Delmano, a fancy cocktail bar in Williamsburg. The title track is about encountering a blue-skinned woman in that cocktail bar. Boivin says about it: “There is a French band named Vendredi Sur Mer and I just fell in love with their music video of ‘La Femme À La Peau Bleue.’ I watched it so many times that she entered my dreams, once we were having a drink at Hotel Delmano. The song is about that dream.”

Ed Struijlaart (feat. The Hornaments) – Guitar
I wrote about talented Dutch singer-songwriter Ed Struijlaart before, when he released his single Make It On Your Own, early this year. Already a rising star in his home country, his music is also starting to be picked up elsewhere in Europe. In Spain, for instance, you can hear his 2016 single Gold in a commercial for San Miguel beer.
Last week, Struijlaart turned 39. Exactly 30 years ago, he got a guitar as a birthday present. An instrument he developed an intensive relationship with: it was there for him when he felt lonely, brought comfort when dear ones passed away, and brought luck when Ed decided to pursue his musical dream. In short: the guitar is the soundtrack of his life.
Now, Guitar is the singer’s new single. An ode to his instrument, that comes with a great horn arrangement, played by Dave Vreuls, Koen Smits, Alex van Abeelen and David Romanello, collectively known as The Hornaments. All other instruments, as well as the production, mixing and mastering (a.k.a. ‘the whole she-bang’) were done by Struijlaart himself, who released the song on his own record label. Now that’s what I call DIY!

Model Depose – Poison Heart
I can hear you think: don’t touch Depeche Mode’s music! And you may be right, because they have already been covered so often… But that’s the exact reason international synthpop webzine Electrozombies is currently trying to compile ‘the possibly best Depeche Mode tribute compilation ever made’. Instead of the obligatory tracks, they want to present the ‘less popular’ cover songs.
You can read about the first part here, but there is more to follow. A second compilation featuring 14 more covers from the era 2009-2017 will be out soon.
The first track off it has just been released. It is brought to you by Dutch electronic pop band Model Depose, who already treated us with gems like Nightwatch and Particles before. This time, they sank their teeth into a song by their musical heroes Depeche Mode. Watch the clip for Poison Heart below:

Intergalactic Lovers – Between The Lines
Speaking of great Belgian bands, here’s another one… Intergalactic Lovers consists of singer Lara Chedraoui, Brendan Corbey (drums), Maarten Huygens (guitar) and Raf De Mey (bass).
Scoring moderate hits in their homeland since second single Delay, the big international break-through has yet to come. Will this be the track to accomplish that? At least it should appeal to a lot of people, with a musical heritage that hints to bands like Interpol, Editors, The Cure and New Order.
15 September, Intergalactic Lovers will release their new album. Exhale is already on Spotify, but currently only the single Between The Lines can be played. The video to the track is an homage to Belgian painter René Magritte. The clip features ten references to paintings of his. See if you can spot them…

The The – We Can’t Stop What’s Coming
One of the highlights of Record Store Day 2017 was The The’s first new single in 15 years. We Can’t Stop What’s Coming is a tribute to The The frontman (and only constant member) Matt Johnson’s brother Andrew, who designed many of the band’s record sleeves and who passed away last year. It’s the third time Johnson wrote a song about the death of a close family member, after Love Is Stronger Than Death (for his brother Eugene) and Phantom Walls for his mother).
We Can’t Stop What’s Coming features former The The members Johnny Marr, Zeke Manyika and James Eller, on guitar, percussion and bass respectively. The female vocalist is Meja Kullertsen. The song was recorded live in one take during Matt Johnson’s first performance in 15 years, on his own radio station.
After quickly selling out the always too low number of vinyl 7”-es (2000 copies, not kidding), the track has now also been made available via streaming services.
