Courtney Barnett – Nameless, Faceless

Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett had released a few other singles before she came on my radar in 2015 with the utterly brilliant Pedestrian At Best. The lyrics were great (‘Give me all your money, and I’ll make some origami honey’) and it reminded me of Tracy Bonham’s Mother Mother, which is good!

Barnett’s album Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit fulfilled all my expectations, with further beauties like Dead Fox and Nobody Really Cares If You Don’t Go To The Party. As you can tell from those titles, her lyrics are everyday observations, but told in a very funny way.

Spoiler alert: don’t expect her to follow the same recipe on her upcoming second album. Tell Me How You Really Feel (out on 18 May) will be more direct and grown-up. She has more to say, while using less words, according to the label (and they ought to know).

Nameless, Faceless is the album’s first single. It investigates the persistent, anonymous phenomenon of internet trolling; people using harsh language online to trigger an emotional response, spreading fake information or misrepresenting themselves.
