Carte Blanche Music Top 2017
Iâll publish your choice (the most read Carte Blanche Music posts of the year) here tomorrow. An absolutely great and totally surprising list. But below you can find my selection of the best music that came out in 2017.
Narrowing down, thatâs what making a year-end chart is about⊠In the past year, I brought 940 great new tracks to your attention via my container playlist Carte Blanche Music, dedicated 650 blog posts to providing you with background info, selected 289 of them honourably for my âbest of the bestâ playlist  Wernerâs Weekly and chose one song each week to be placed in the spotlights on the blog: the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard.
Now, the time has come to put all of that information together, and serve you with my very personal, now and then arbitrary, but over-all rather brilliant ? final playlist of the year: the Carte Blanche Music Top 2017.
Itâs a Top 100. With 100 different artists in it. Needless to say it was a struggle. Not even all the Wildcards made this final list and some artists made more than one great song in the past year. Still, I only chose one. I wonât bother you with many statistics, but Iâm delighted to say that 43% of the songs feature female lead vocals. I really hope this will become a trend in 2018 on radio and streaming playlists alike.
Because all 100 songs are dear to me, they are alphabetically ordered. Of course, you can listen to the Carte Blanche Music Top 2017 on Spotify, and the links below correspond with my original recommendations. Believe me, it doesnât get better than this (play)list đ . Enjoy!
European Border Breakers Chart 17 February 2017
The European Border Breakers Chart is the quickest way to get to know what talented European artists are successfully breaking borders across our continent. Following the chart throughout the year also enables you to predict next yearâs European Border Breakers Awards winners, which is a nice game in itself.
Half of the 12 entries in this weekâs EBBChart were never in the Top 100 before. Donât Kill My Vibe, the debut single of emerging Norwegian pop singer Sigrid is the highest entry at #52. The track is popular on radio all over Scandinavia, but also in Germany, Spain, the UK and Ireland. More countries are set to follow.
The other entries are Arman Cekin feat. Paul Rey & Snoop Dogg (California Dreaming, #69), Liv Dawson (Searching, #86), Wincent Weiss (Feuerwerk, #87), Jain (Heads Up, #94) and Izzy Bizu (Give Me Love, #100).
A warm welcome back from my part to Thanks (feat. Sam Sparro) (Your Man, #77) and Zak Abel (Everybody Needs Love, #96).
For the complete Top 100, click the âEBBChartâ tab at the top of this blog (loading of the PDF may take a little while). Visit www.europeanborderbreakerscharts.eu for more charts (like the Bubbling Under, which ranks the tracks that are on their way to the Top 100).
European Border Breakers Chart 10 February 2017
Six of the 16(!) entries in this weekâs European Border Breakers Chart have never been in the Top 100 before. The highest entry is Bad Soundsâ Wages. Iâll feature them here later, like I did earlier with Izzy Bizuâs Talking To You (pictured), that has finally been picked up by European radio stations and comes in at #69 this week.
In the Bubbling Under chart, which features tracks on their way to the Top 100, youâll find EBBA winners Jain and Jaakko Eino Kalevi, among others.
If you want to discover more new European music, click the âEBBChartâ tab at the top of this blog (loading of the PDF may take a little while). For more charts, please visit www.europeanborderbreakerscharts.eu. You can listen to all of the music and share the tracks you like via social media. Spread the music!
Wernerâs Weekly (week 4)
As always, Wernerâs Weekly consists of the very best of all tracks that I put in my Carte Blanche Music playlist last week. In this container playlist, which features the highlights of all music releases in 2017 so far, youâll find additions of Halestorm, The xx, Temples, Declan McKenna, Kâs Choice feat. Skin, Spoon, Lady Antebellum, and many more. But only the following have made it to my narrowed down selection (in alphabetical order) of top tracks. Activate the player in the sidebar to listen to the songs and if you want to know more about them, click on the links below:
- Powers – Dance (this weekâs Wildcard)
- Izzy Bizu – Talking To You (last weekâs Wildcard)
- Blackfield – How Was Your Ride?
- Blaenavon – Orthodox Man
- Dan Croll – Away From Today
- Electric Guest – Back From Me
- Gloria Estefan – One Day At A Time
- Saint Motel – Move
- Train – The News
Mind that as of this week I give extra support to the Wildcard by featuring it twice in Wernerâs Weekly: in the current week and the week after.
Wernerâs Weekly (week 3)
Like I explained last week, each Monday morning Iâll publish Wernerâs Weekly on this blog. These are the very best of all tracks that I dragged into my container playlist Carte Blanche Music last week.
For that full playlist (featuring the likes of The Shins, Avi On Fire and Harlea), click on the image in the sidebar. To listen to Wernerâs Weekly (in alphabetical order), hit the player in the sidebar, while reading about the tracks by clicking the links below:
European Border Breakers Chart 6 January 2017
From now on, each Friday Iâll publish the new European Border Breakers Chart on Carte Blanche Music. It is one mouse click away under the âEBBChartâ tab at the top of this blog, where youâll find it in downloadable and printable PDF format.
Only debuting European artists can enter the European Border Breakers Chart, with releases that are not older than two years. The chart is based on airplay outside the artistâs home country by 50 tastemaker radio stations across 33 countries all over Europe. This makes the EBBC the quickest chart around and the best place to discover new talent.
This weekâs chart counts no less than 17 (re)entries. Thatâs an extraordinary number, but not inexplicable. After the Christmas period, the jingle bells and year-end charts, radio makers are eager to catch up with new music.
Amidst re-entries by The Hunna, Her, Izzy Bizu, Vant, and EBBA winners Namika and Natalie La Rose among others, only three tracks are totally new to the chart.
Check which ones by hitting the âEBBChartâ tab at the top of this blog (loading may take a little while). For more charts, features and information, go to www.europeanborderbreakerscharts.eu, where you can listen to all tracks and share them as well!
Carte Blanche Top 2016
Is there a better way to introduce myself and this new music blog than via a year-end chart? Last year in my Carte Blanche radio show I played over 800 new tracks, all of which you can find in this 2016 container playlist (subject to availability). Only 100 of them made it to the Carte Blanche Top 2016.
Some random statistics:
- After the usual suspects â Great-Britain (34) and United States (19) â the Netherlands deliver most entries (9), followed by Sweden (8), Belgium (6), Australia (5), Norway and France (4 each)
- 42% of all lead vocals are sung by women, which is unique compared to other radio stations
- There are more rock tracks in (the upper regions of) the Carte Blanche Top 2016 than in your average year-end chart
- The same goes for acts that were already successful 10, 20, even 30 years ago, proving they are still relevant today
If you want, you can listen to my radio show (in Dutch) containing the Top 30 of my year-end chart. Meanwhile you can browse through the complete list below. Enjoy!
Do You Still Love Me?
Watch this space!
