Carte Blanche Music Top 2018
Ahead of your favourites among this year’s Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which I publish on New Year’s Day, I round off 2018 with my personal choice.
The last year, I introduced you to 1104 great new songs via my container playlist Carte Blanche Music; over 65 hours of music. Exactly 500 of those translated into a written endorsement through this blog. In other words: only one out of each 11 suggestions (and one fifth of all of my posts) made it onto the Carte Blanche Music Top 2018.
I’m very proud of this year-end list, as it differs largely from the majority of charts you’ll find. Just a few statistics:
- 58% of the tracks feature female lead vocals (up from an already impressive 43% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2017)
- 43% of the tracks are guitar-based (rock is dead? Think again!)
- Apart from British and American acts, my list contains artists from Australia, Norway, the Netherlands, Canada, Spain, France, Belgium, Ireland, Estonia, Germany, Sweden, Hungary and South Korea
- By consequence, you’ll not only hear lyrics in English, but also in French, Hungarian, Spanish, Portuguese and Korean
- Needless to say, my year-end list contains no proper hits whatsoever 😉
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2018 features 100 tracks by 100 different artists. As making that choice was hard enough, the songs are sorted alphabetically. Just use the shuffle button if you prefer another order 😉.
I hope you enjoy listening to the list via the Spotify player. Meanwhile, you can read my original recommendations through the links below.
Werner’s Weekly (week 36)
For most of us, the summer holidays are over. If you, too, enjoyed some nice weeks off, you may have a feeling you missed out on a lot of great new music. And indeed, you did 😉.
But catching up is easier than ever these days. I’ve continued to update my ‘best of 2018’ playlist Carte Blanche Music on a daily basis, so if you follow it and sort it by ‘recently added’ (or through the calendar icon on your desktop app), the latest new songs are automatically displayed at the top of the list. You’re welcome!
Last week, I added new music by Jonathan Jeremiah, Muse, Nothing But Thieves, The Struts feat. Kesha, Twenty One Pilots, The Wombats and others. You can find the most recent Wildcards and the other tracks that particularly stood out below. They’re presented in alphabetical order in my ‘best of the best’ playlist Werner’s Weekly, your compass to the music that matters:
- Lauren Daigle – Still Rolling Stones (Wildcard this week)
- Say Lou Lou – Golden Child (Wildcard last week)
- Barns Courtney – “99”
- Eckhardt & The House – Put Me In A Cape
- Joe Bonamassa – Evil Mama
- Oh Pep! – What’s The Deal With David?
- You Me At Six – Back Again
Click the links for more info about each song, and if you can spare 21 minutes, you can listen to six of the above via the Werner’s Weekly player in the sidebar. Joe Bonamassa is missing from the Spotify playlist, simply because it isn’t available on streaming platforms yet. You can check the video instead. Enjoy!

Werner’s Weekly (week 35)
In my Carte Blanche Music playlist I keep you up to speed with the best new music that was released this year, so far. Mind you: it doesn’t pretend to give you a full overview of all new releases. On the contrary, I only present you with great new songs. In other words: following my list saves you a lot of time browsing numerous other playlists and listening to songs you probably don’t like… #tipoftheweek 😉
Last week, I added the likes of Dubstar, Plain White T’s, Rea Garvey, Smallpools & The Aces, and Villagers to my container playlist. But if 14 additions are too much for you (no offence), below you’ll find Werner’s Weekly, your compass to the music that matters. If you’re only looking for the best of the best, here they are, alphabetically ordered and preceded by the two latest Wildcards:
- Say Lou Lou – Golden Child (Wildcard this week)
- Cookin’ On 3 Burners feat. Kaiit – Warning (Wildcard last week)
- Áine Cahill – Beauty Is A Lie
- Ed Struijlaart (feat. The Hornaments) – Guitar

As usual, clicking the links provides you with extra information (both serious and fun facts), and you can listen to all seven of the songs via the Werner’s Weekly player in the sidebar. Enjoy!

Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming – often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which I’ll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesn’t mean the blog is closing down. It’ll continue to be the home of my ‘best of’ collection (Werner’s Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, I’ll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. You’ll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If you’re an artist, don’t be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprised…
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ‘♥’ in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!

Gorgeous – Divine
With a band named Gorgeous and a single titled Divine, you can wait for the smart wordplay. We’ll come to that later, but let’s start at the beginning…
Singer and songwriter Maríe Louise and producer and multi-instrumentalist Murga are Gorgeous. Oh wait, that one came too early… Let me rephrase. Gorgeous are singer and songwriter Maríe Louise and producer and multi-instrumentalist Murga. The Copenhagen-based duo met three years ago, and write and record all their music as a team.
They self-released their first single Divine in late August 2021. The right song at the wrong time, amidst the traditional tsunami of post summer releases by other artists. However, it did draw the attention of a proper record label. Not only did it decide to sign the duo and re-release their awesome debut, they also commanded a beautiful video to go with it. This adds greatly to the track’s atmosphere: gentle and introverted, yet fresh and charming. And it’s about a very relatable subject, as well.
Maríe Louise says about it: “Falling in love easily seems like a veil of euphoria, happiness and fascination. But at the same time, it’s a personal invitation into the life of a complete stranger – and the other way around – where you eventually will have to face each other’s story and what it holds of peculiarities, weaknesses, misfortune and tragedy. Divine is about that total surrender. About showing the good and the bad sides when you bump into that ‘one in a million’ true love.”
All in all, Divine is gorgeous and Gorgeous is divine (you may shoot me now).

Reddi – The Show
Reddi are a brand-new, all Danish, all female pop/rock band. They’re brought together by one of the Danish music industry’s biggest names over the past couple of decades, Chief1 (Lars Pedersen) and drummer Ihan Haydar. The latter is joined in the quartet by Siggy Savery (vocals and guitar), Agnes Roslund (guitar) and Ida Bergkvist (bass).
The Show is their great debut single, which was written as their contribution to the Melodi Grand Prix, Denmark’s qualifying round for the Eurovision Song Contest. They won gloriously and will represent Denmark next May in Turin.
Reddi’s winning entry starts as a piano ballad, but one minute into the song, it shows its true colours. An up-tempo guitar riff and pounding drums turn the track into a punky rock song with empowering lyrics.
The band say about it: “It’s a song that encourages you to listen to yourself and go after your dreams, no matter what others say and think. We want to inspire you to never hold back, no matter what you want in life!”
I’m completely Reddi for this band to rock our socks off!

The Vaccines – Thunder Fever
The Vaccines are back at their bouncing best. Thunder Fever is a fresh and danceable track, produced by Fryars (Mark Ronson, Pharrell). I dare you to sit still to this one!
Front man Justin Young says about the new single: “Thunder Fever plays on the idea that falling in love can feel as powerful, intense and as sudden as something meteorological. Something heaven sent. It feels out of this world. Pop music has always been obsessed with the other-worldly, and that’s how the best of it often looks and feels – it relies on hyperbole. I thought our inability to travel to the edge of life’s extremes over the last couple of years and experience any form of hyperbole ourselves added a new and cruel dimension to this. But hopefully ‘Thunder Fever’ allows some escape. It comes at a time when the storm clouds finally feel like they’re parting and hopefully it sounds as fun and frenetic as taking shelter from the rain with someone you cant get out of your head.”

Lizzie Esau – Shade Of Green
Lizzie Esau’s musical inspiration comes from a variety of artists, including Amy Winehouse, London Grammar, Imogen Heap and Biffy Clyro. No wonder her own music is a melting pot of styles and genres as well. Her new single Shade Of Green is a guitar-based track with a groovy bass line and layered vocals. It has a real band feel and sounds as if it was recorded live. This song will go down well during her upcoming tour.
Esau says about the track: “Shade Of Green was written at the end of summer of 2021, when I was seeing so many people I love – and myself – comparing everything we do and are to other people, and constantly feeling not good enough. It’s about jealousy turning you bitter and hateful to the point where your view is so warped, and you begin to turn against each other rather than the society and the media that has created these conventions. More than anything I wanted the message of this song to be not to compare yourself, drag each other down or hate, but to try to find ways to feel good enough and accept who you are.”

Wildcard (week 6):
Tommy – Alive
So far, Leicester was well-known as the town artists like Kasabian, John Deacon (Queen), Diesel Park West and John Illsley (Dire Straits) came from. Indie quartet Arcades had their roots in Leicester as well. Following the split of the band, former front man Tommy Cobley is now starting his own project, Tommy.
Cobley spent the last eighteen months crafting an album’s worth of songs. About this productivity, he says: “I couldn’t stop writing and when it came to recording, I knew these songs were special.” That can certainly be said about his debut single Alive. It’s a typically British tune with a nostalgic bagginess. Richard Ashcroft was the name that first popped up when I heard the track.
Apart from the prominent acoustic guitar and walking bass line, a few things stand out: the lively percussion, trumpet licks (performed by The Twang drummer Ash Sheehan), and the gospel vocals by powerhouse Ange Lloyd. The song was produced by legendary producer Gavin Monaghan (Editors, Ocean Colour Scene, Robert Plant). Indeed, ‘team Tommy’ is pretty impressive.
A great start of Cobley’s solo career! We thought we’d lend a hand by chosing Tommy’s debut single Alive as this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard.
