Is acid punk a genre? If not, North London’s Girli (born Milly Toomey) may just have invented it. Her new single Day Month Second comes 294 days, 9½ months, 423.360 seconds after the track Hot Mess, that I already liked so much.

“Day Month Second is my breakup anthem,” she says. “It’s about wanting to get over someone so bad but not being able to shake the memory of them and how they messed you around. It’s an angry, sad, but also liberating tune.”

European Border Breakers Chart 15 June 2018

If you’re interested in new European music by emerging artists from this continent, then the European Border Breakers Chart is your ultimate source of information. Every Friday around noon, the new Top 100 is published, revealing the most successful tracks outside the home countries of the artists in question. 28% of this week’s chart are (re)entries, 13 of which have never featured in the Top 100 before.
Lump, the new project of Laura Marling with Tunng’s Mike Lindsay (pictured), has an exceptionally good week. Not only does their first single Curse Of The Contemporary gain a notch at #22, but the two follow-up singles and a track off their just-released eponymous debut album enter the chart.

When Ferry de Ruiter released his debut single as Not.Your.Regular.Boy., Crazyland, two months ago, he made quite an impression. The story of his career so far could easily have resulted in a gimmick, but instead, he came up with a grown-up pop song.

Now, he’s ready to take the next step. Not.Your.Regular.Boy.’s new single, Get Down Make Love, is a rock song with pop hooks. And it’s not a cover of the same-titled Queen song.

Kira Puru – Molotov

If you need more cowbell, try Kira Puru’s new single Molotov. An explosive track indeed. Just like her latest single, former Carte Blanche Music Wildcard Tension, Molotov starts off with a hand-clapping, finger-snapping, toe-tapping bassline. Thick, fuzzy, groovy and incredibly infectious. The rest of the song is just as addictive, full of nana-na-nana choruses and stu-stu-stu-stuttering vocals.

Australian newcomer Kira Puru has been around the music scene for some time, collaborating with and writing for other artists, but it’s now time for her to shine as a solo artist. A huge talent!

Elvis Costello (feat. The Roots) – Someone Else’s Heart

Declan MacManus. Even the name has something tragic about it. And as a musician, Elvis Costello is the master of melancholy as well. But despite the sheer brilliance of songs like I Want You, So Like Candy and This House Is Empty Now, I’m equally fond of his more up-tempo (and more uplifting) ones. Oliver’s Army, Accidents Will Happen, and Veronica for instance. He just released a track in the latter category.

More than three decades after producing Squeeze’s 1981 album East Side Story (the one featuring Tempted and Labelled With Love), Elvis Costello teamed up with ?uestlove, Kirk Douglas, Owen Biddle, Ray Angry, and Frank Knuckles to cover Someone Else’s Heart from the album. They recorded this version of Someone Else’s Heart in 2011. It marked the first time that Costello and The Roots collaborated, igniting the spark that led to 2013’s album Wise Up Ghost.

This song (and its instrumental version on the flip side) first became available on 21 April as a limited edition 7” for Record Store Day 2018 to please the happy few. Now, it’s also available digitally for the majority of people.

You Me At Six – 3AM

5 October You Me At Six release their new album. It’s their sixth, so why not call it VI? And that’s just what they did. But that’s not all they did. On the upcoming album, the band also push their boundaries and enter into the alternative pop world.

Singer Josh Franceschi says about this: “You have to make music for yourself, because without authenticity people are going to smell the bullshit. None of us are going into this with any fear, because we’ve made something we can stand behind.”

Ahead of the album, You Me At Six just released two tracks at once: Fast Forward will keep their rock fans satisfied, whilst 3AM is one of their more mainstream songs. Great radio stuff!

Blackbook – Love Is A Crime

Blackbook are a duo from Switzerland, and that’s virtually all we know about them. Just as they wish, because they deliberately refrain from sharing information about themselves. Which is their good right of course. It’s 2018 after all…

The good part about that is, that we must let the music speak for itself. And one thing is clear: Blackbook must love the ’80s. Their very first single Love Is A Crime is a synth rock song from the 80s manual. It sounds like a marriage between Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys. These are two of my all-time favourite bands, so it immediately grabbed my attention.

Not only musically Love Is A Crime is a great debut, they also have something to say. The song has a clear message: all forms of love should be respected and celebrated, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, or religion. The video is a strong visual representation of this message.

All in all, these are more than enough reasons to make Blackbook’s Love Is A Crime this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, so you can enjoy it here a whole week long.

Lead Pony – Soul Sucker

Lead Pony are a San Diego based ‘dirty blues rock band’, that only formed in early 2017. The quartet, featuring Jesse Hofstee, Dylan Stallard, Hillary Laughery and R. Fillmore, brings you songs of love, death, and every social statement in-between, that are rooted in the past, with colourful fuzz, dangerous piano, and feverish drumming.

Their new, double A-sided release Two Love Songs does indeed contain two songs (how appropriate):

Breaker (Don’t Touch Me) is a hard driving tune that questions the meaning of the trials of partnership
Soul Sucker, my favourite, explores the darker paths our minds tend to conjure, perhaps more than we care to admit

Both tracks come ahead of the band’s first full length, to be released by the end of summer. A second album has already been announced for early 2019.

Maicø – Hey Hey

Maicø is a five-piece, consisting of Miguel Barceló (vocals), Nito (guitar), Emilio Mut (bass), Joan Lluis Caballero (keys) and Ángel Ríos (drums). Their new single Hey Hey is an ode to their home ground, the island of Mallorca. The song, the third single off their debut album Emotional Tourist, enters the Spanish chart Los 40 Principales this week, and sounds like it could be a summer hit all over Europe.

Sheila & The Kit – Time Again

Sheila & The Kit consists of Suzanne Kipping, Bo Koek, Ralf Pouw (all Dutch) and Chris Doyle (USA). Two years ago, Suzanne and Bo felt it was time to begin a live act with music that they themselves would want to dance to throughout the night. They disappeared into the studio for months and soon the first ideas emerged. With help from Ralf and Chris these ideas were translated into melodic synth-driven songs that are electronic and groovy, and flirt with sounds of the ’80s while retaining a modern feel.

Their singles are getting better and better, and the best one so far is out now: Time Again will get you and the band ready for the summer festival season.
