Bloxx – Everything I’ve Ever Learned
The last ten months, Bloxx have become regular visitors at Carte Blanche Music. In my opinion, their first album Lie Out Loud is one of the best debuts of 2020. But the Uxbridge quartet haven’t sat still since its release. They’re back with brand-new music already.
Everything I’ve Ever Learned continues where Lie Out Loud left off, which is a good thing. Especially if you’re as fond of Bloxx’s infectious indie-rock sound as I am. Their new single was produced by Rich Turvey, who worked with Blossoms and Oscar Lang before.
Front woman Ophelia Booth says about the track: “The last two years for me have been very difficult, with health scares and anxiety hitting the roof. This song was really important in my journey to stop trying to understand everything, and to just accept the cards you’re dealt and make it work for you. It taught me to keep holding on, even when your grip is loose. (…) It’s basically a self help song, it’s for everyone that needs to hear it. ‘You should learn to hold on / It’s not the end of the world’.”

Pixey – Electric Dream
I’m really looking forward to 24 March. That day, one of today’s most outstanding talents, Pixey, releases her second EP Free To Live In Colour. The title track is on it, as well as last year’s great tune Just Move. And she just released a third song off it, Electric Dream.
Being a performer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Electric Dream is another one of Pixey’s DIY tracks. Its fresh, vivid, clever and danceable Madchester sound brings us right back to 1990. That isn’t how it came to life however. She says about the single: “Electric Dream was originally written as a piano ballad, but after finishing the lyrics I felt the song worked as a dance track. I wrote it to make sense of being locked in with nothing to rely on but technology. The verses are all of my anxieties that come with that. Like trying to simulate humanity digitally and what kind of a future that would be. But the choruses are about the imperfections of real life that technology and AI can’t give us.”
Apart from the three singles so far, her new EP will feature two more songs. Pixey adds: “I wanted a collection of tracks which gave a quick snapshot into me and my brain – where I’m from, where I want to be and what I’m thinking about,” she adds of her new EP. “I hope people can take something meaningful from it or simply have a dance.”
And that’s not all. She’s currently writing about three new tracks a week, so you can expect a whole lotta music to come out this year.

President Street – Time Is Up
Ruby Servinis and Peter Moses named their band after the street in Perth, Australia where Moses grew up. Each member comes from a very different walk of life and musical background, which also explains the variety in their music. They blend so many genres, that pop-fusion is the best way to describe it.
President Street’s new single is a vibrant and uplifting tune, mixed by world-renowned Ash Howes. But don’t let its carnival-esque nature and infectious house piano distract you from its important message. In fact, as you might have concluded from its title, Time Is Up is a protest song. Inspiration for the track came from the many movements the world saw over the last few years. Think about issues like climate change, LGBTQ+ rights, police brutality, #metoo or black lives matter.
Speaking of the song, President Street says: “Watching the news we were struck by the diversity of people coming together peacefully. And so we wanted it to feel like a celebration of people of all colours, age, religions and gender coming together to say that we’ve all had enough, and the time for change is now.”

Therapie Taxi – Eté 90
In the few years they’ve been active, French band Therapie Taxi attracted a large audience. Their single Hit Sale (feat. Roméo Elvis) especially, was a big, eh… hit. In its slipstream their same-titled debut album sold 170.000 pieces in France alone.
Therefore, the announcement of the group disbanding came as quite a surprise last December. Luckily, they recorded a last EP to say goodbye. Also, a final tour is planned for next summer.
Therapie Taxi’s final EP Rupture 2 Merde is out now. It contains seven electronic pop songs, just what their fans were waiting for. Eté 90 is the band’s last single. Enjoy it while it lasts…

Your favourites (2020)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020 doesn’t only include all of the 994 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020, which I published yesterday. But that’s only my selection. Isn’t it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: what were your favourites in 2020?

Carte Blanche Music Top 2020
Ahead of your favourites among this year’s Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which I’ll publish tomorrow, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2020. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 994 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020. These findings are further evidence of the fact that the music radio stations play for you is far from representative of the wealth of great new music out there. Thankfully, there are blogs like Carte Blanche Music that are independent and unbiased, and don’t want to please everybody at the same time. We’re here to surprise you with great new music, no matter what genre or gender, origin or orientation. Just a few statistics:
- Judging from this Top 100 alone (let alone the full container playlist), 2020 was a great year for pure pop music, young artists, ‘80s influences, independent releases, the Australian music scene, queer pop-rock and female vocalists
- A whopping 70% of the tracks in this year’s list feature female lead vocals (and I thought the 60% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 was impressive already)
- Overall, rock ruled. 54% of the tracks in my year-end chart is guitar-based (just over last year’s tally)
- The list clearly shows there are more countries that produce great artists than Great-Britain and the United States alone. This year, more nationalities than ever are represented in my Top 100. You’ll also find artists from Armenia, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland
- As a result, although most lyrics are in English, you’ll also hear songs (partly) sung in French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Swedish
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2020 features 100 tracks, which are presented below in alphabetical order. You can listen to them all via the Spotify player. If you prefer another order, just use the shuffle button 😉.

Wildcard (week 48):
Monowhales – BL/FF (Fake Friends)
Canadian indie-rock band Monowhales recorded their debut album with JUNO Award nominated producer Ryan Worsley. So far, only two tracks have been released ahead of it: RWLYD (Really Wanna Let You Down) and All Or Nothing. Or, to be precise, they just added a third one to the list: BL/FF (Fake Friends) is the Toronto trio’s new single. An ode to online dating, this is another great, bold and bouncing pop-rock track that begs to be played live.
About the song, vocalist Sally Shaar says: “BL/FF (Fake Friends)” gases you up for a hook-up. Memories flood into your head about that damn person that’s hard to get over because the tension is just too fun to avoid. Imagine a late night, your phone dings and you get that far too familiar message. So, you jump in your car at 3am and turn this song up surrounded by streetlights and heavy feelings of lust on your way to some spicey sleepover.”
No word yet about the release of their album, alas. Judging by the sound of the singles, it will be epic. For now, all we can do is wait for another of their colourful video’s. While you’re at it, listen to BL/FF (Fake Friends) on repeat. It’s the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard and will feature here prominently for a week!

Wildcard (week 44):
Rooue – What You Want
Roísín & Louisa O’Connor are twin sisters. They were born in London, but have been living in Dublin, Ireland since their pre-teens. As a pop duo, Ro and Lou call themselves Rooue (see what they did there? 😉 ).
Their beautifully blending, slightly distorted harmonies are a signature part of their sound. The razor sharp and up-to-date production does the rest. What You Want is only their debut single. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Nao, Banks, Lennon Stella and Christina Aguilera, it combines electronic dark pop with a hint of old-school R&B. In a way, it reminds me a bit of another recent debut single: Loud Boy by Archie X.
Speaking on the single, Rooue says: “What You Want is about how we as women within the music industry and within everyday life have felt the pressures to conform within societies expectations. The story line stems from our experience studying in music college. On one hand being forced to be authentic, yet being criticised when not fulfilling their mould whilst reaching our authentic sound.”
With What You Want, the twins clearly and convincingly found their own voice and style. With this very promising debut, Rooue secure this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!
In the Wildcards 2020 playlist you’ll find all of this year’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcards so far.
Lauran Hibberd – Boy Bye
Slacker pop princess Lauran Hibberd’s releases go from strength to strength. Her new single Boy Bye, which draws from the likes of Pixies and Weezer, is her boldest yet. Created during a lockdown session with producer Suzy Shinn (Weezer, Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, Dua Lipa), it shows great progression and growing confidence. Both explosive and obsessive, Boy Bye is a charming tune, even though it’s about an unhealthy relationship.
“Boy Bye IS co-dependency”, the Isle Of Wight native says. “It has a scarily obsessive nature about it and is based on the need to ‘feed’ someone to keep them around. I sort of battle with myself throughout the whole track, the same way you would in your brain when stuff like this happens and you try and justify it to yourself. There’s an odd strength in it though, and I think it’s noticing it and being able to say it out loud that gives it that balls to the wall sort of ‘get lost’ momentum. Also BYE BOYSSSS!!!!”
