Piroshka – Scratching At The Lid
To call Piroshka a supergroup is no exaggeration. The band is fronted by former Lush singer Miki Berenyi (vocals/guitar) and also includes her partner, former Moose guitarist KJ โMooseโ McKillop. Other members are Modern English bassist Mick Conroy and former Elastica drummer Justin Welch. No coincidence, then, that their new band sounds like the best of all of those groups crammed into one quartet.
Their first album Brickbat was a great calling card, but judging by their new single, the best has yet to come. 23 July, Piroshka release their sophomore album Love Drips And Gathers. The title is a line taken from Dylan Thomas’ poem The force that through the green fuse drives the flower. After their debut explored social and political divisions, its follow-up moves along more introspective lines. According to a press release, the album is โinspired by love, family, belonging, memoryโ.
Berenyi explains: โIf Brickbat was our Britpop album, then Love Drips And Gathers is shoegaze! It wasnโt intentional; we just wanted a different focus. Iโve always seen debut albums as capturing a bandโs first moments, when you really have momentum, and then the second album is the chance for a more thoughtful approach.โ
The new long-player is preceded by Piroshkaโs new single Scratching At The Lid. A soaring and ecstatically muddy track and a great way to whet our appetite.
