San Mei – Midnight
On the surface, Midnight sounds like a dream-pop single with a kind of 60’s pop feel. But at the same time, it’s San Mei’s most personal song so far. It was nothing less than a therapeutic track for her. She wrote it to cope with the passing of her mother.
The Australian singer-songwriter (real name: Emily Hamilton) explains: “She was my best friend, and losing her was so very hard. (…) I wrote the chorus lyrics ‘go sweetly, out into the night‘ as a sentiment of letting go, because I decided I didn’t want to keep trying to hold on to something I wasn’t going to get back. I wanted this song to be a celebration and a sweet send-off, and my way of finally saying goodbye.”
Midnight is the first song San Mei produced herself, helped by Michael McCartney and Holy Holy’s Oscar Dawson.
