Ali Barter – You Get In My Way
Since the release of her second album Hello, Iâm Doing My Best in 2019, things have gone pretty quiet around Ali Barter. Luckily, the Australian rock chick just announced her new EP Chocolate Cake, set for release on 30 April. She already served up its lead single Twisted Up last year, but now a second teaser track is out.
You Get In My Way is unlike anything in Barterâs discography. It contains spoken word verses, which eventually erupt into a booming chorus.
In a press release, the Melbourne singer-songwriter explains: âI wrote You Get In My Way in Nashville in 2019. I was travelling without my husband and had this feeling of freedom to do all the silly things I did when I was single.â She continued to say that she âoften [has] funny conversations with my friends in long term relationships about the dumb things we would do if our partner wasnât around. Ultimately I donât want to do these things, but it was fun to explore the feeling of rebelling from the security of a long term relationship.â

Ali Barter – January
Four months early, Ali Barter releases her new single January. A song that builds up tension throughout, only to explode right at the end, when she hits all the high notes. Somehow, the track reminds me of Tracy Bonham.
January is the latest single to precede Barterâs second album Hello, Iâm Doing My Best (due out on 18 October). Itâs a rant against New Yearâs resolutions. Barter explains: âIt seems like every year, January rolls around and Iâm still trying to fix the same things as the year before. The older I get the more I realize that I donât change, this is all I got. So fuck it.â
Once again, the Australian singer-songwriter combines a killer song with a killer (one-shot) video. You can watch it below (or listen through your platform of choice).

Ali Barter – Backseat
When Ali Barter released her debut album A Suitable Girl in 2017, following three EPâs, I thought it was a great record. It spawned the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard Girlie Bits, for instance. Despite the long-playerâs success however, it filled the Australian singer-songwriter with insecurity, even leading up to her decision never to write again. Thankfully, she changed her mindâŠ
18 October, Barter will put out her second album Hello, Iâm Doing My Best, the title of which is self-explanatory. Backseat is her new single. Billed as Ali’s first ever love song, she wrote it about meeting her producer/collaborator/boyfriend Oscar Dawson (a member of the band Holy Holy). He also features in the songâs hilarious video.
Barter explains: âBackseat is about admiring someone from afar and then falling in love. I had this idea of a clip that was kinda like âTrue Romanceâ crossed with âMiseryâ. How love can make you a bit crazy and how sometimes we smother love with our love. The clip is about two awkward people that get together one night at a bar. A girl admires a boy from afar but when she meets him they are so clumsy and over eager that they end up injuring each other during a late night jam session. Itâs just like love really. A mess.â

Wildcard (week 19):
Ali Barter – Girlie Bits
Do you know the expression âkicking against the pricksâ? Thatâs what Australian singer Ali Barter does on this single. Itâs a tradition that goes back to powerful women in music in the â70s and â80s of the last century, but in 2018, the subject is as current as ever.
Ali Barter says about Girlie Bits: âIt has nothing to do with body parts, itâs about the cage of what we expect of women: girlie guitar parts, girlie singing, hair; this idea of âfemininityâ and how to fit within it. But women are not some gentle, watered down version of men. We do it our own way. We work really hard to write good songs and play great gigs – only to have people critique our clothes and the look on our faces, instead of the music.â
Girlie Bits was first released in 2016, but Barterâs label found a new distribution partner, thatâs confident the song deserves a second chance. I agree the track is likely to appeal to a whole lot of people, women and men alike. And if youâre not into lyrics, but youâre a fan of Juliana Hatfield or Tracy Bonham (or Alex Lahey or Courtney Barnett, who are Australians like Barter), thereâs a lot to like here as well!
This week, Girlie Bits by Ali Barter is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, providing the song and its message with a well-deserved prominent platform.

Stats – Naturalise Me
13 November, only a year and a half after their debut album Other Peopleâs Lives, Stats put out opus #2. The London-based bandâs sophomore record is titled Powys 1999. It was recorded in a residential studio close to where frontman Ed Seed grew up in Powys (Wales). On the album, Seed (vocals, guitar) is joined by Nicole Robson (vocals/keyboards), Stu Barter (vocals/bass), John Barrett (drums), Duncan Brown (guitar), Iso Waller-Bridge (vocals/keyboards) and Ant Whiting (keyboards).
Naturalise Me is the long-playerâs first single. Itâs a funky, danceable pop song with an industrial, Depeche Mode-like feel to it. The track finds Seed questioning his roots. âGrowing up I felt like I didnât fit in or belong where I was born and raisedâ, he says. âWhen it comes to the countryside we often talk about the natural – and by implication the unnatural – as if we are talking about the real, and by implication the fake. I felt somehow fake in Powys as a born incomer, un-local, neither Welsh nor English. But by looking at the landscape, I started to realise the construction and extraction behind it, and the myth of its naturalness.â

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ

Carte Blanche Music Top 2021
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which Iâll publish next week, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2021. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 998 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2021.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2021. If thereâs one â sad â common denominator to be found in this list, itâs that most of these songs have been criminally overlooked by radio stations outside the artistâs home countries. Radio playlists are growing more and more uniform, denying the diversity of the music available. Obviously, with over 60.000 new tracks added to Spotify every day the supply is kind of excessive, but more adventurous choices would be very welcome. Knowing this wonât happen, the best you can do is follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist, then Iâll keep you updated đ. This is what you can expect, based on this yearâs Top 2021:
- Mostly (young and) upcoming artists, many of whom release their music independently
- No less than 72% of the Top 2021 features female vocalists, up from 70% in our Top 2020 and 60% in the Top 2019
- We love pure pop songs, but with 40% guitar-based tracks, weâre more rock ânâ roll than average. According to Spotify Wrapped, our favourite genres last year were indie pop, modern alternative rock and dance pop, and we agree
- You can expect the best new tunes from all over the world, but even we have our preferences. We have extra warm feelings for music from countries like Australia, France, Canada and Denmark. Just so you knowâŠ
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2021 features 100 tracks, which are presented below in alphabetical order. You can listen to them all via the Spotify player. If you prefer another order, the shuffle button is your friend.
