Rinse feat. Hatchie – Back Into Your Arms
Joe Agius (Rinse) and Harriette Pillbeam (Hatchie) arenât exactly complete strangers. On the contrary, they are frequent collaborators. When not working on his own material, Agius writes with Pillbeam on her songs. He is also the lead guitarist and keyboard player in her band. So, it may not come as a surprise that both their projects live in the same musical universe. Call it dream-pop, or The Cure light (which is meant to be a compliment).
This year, Rinse released a few singles already, and now he has also announced his debut EP Wherever I Am. Itâs scheduled for release on 5 March 2021. Back Into Your Arms, which features Hatchieâs vocals on it, is its radio-friendly new single.
In a statement, Agius says: âI originally started writing Back Into Your Arms as a possible song for Hatchie last year, but enjoyed singing it too much myself and decided to make it my own. Harrietteâs vocals sounded so great accompanying mine on the demo we decided it would be a perfect opportunity to make her an official feature, since we both loved the song so much.â
He continues: âI finished the lyrics earlier this year after watching a lot of my friends struggle to maintain long distance relationships through the pressures brought on by COVID-19 and the past year. Each verse is from a different personâs view during different stages of a relationship, while the choruses fantasize about the idea that just being in each otherâs arms is enough to make it work.â

Hatchie – Stay With Me
Brisbane dream-pop artist Hariette Pillbeam, better known as Hatchie, has finished her full-length debut album Keepsake (due out on 21 June). It follows her first EP Sugar And Spice, which collected her singles so far, in 2018.
After Without A Blush, the Australian singer-songwriter just put out the setâs second single. Not exactly the first song with this title, Stay With Me shows a somewhat lighter, more danceable side of Hatchie, compared to her earlier, Cocteau Twins, Mazzy Star, and My Bloody Valentine inspired tracks.
She comments: âStay With Me was written as a writing exercise in an effort to step away from my usual style into something more fun and dancey. We originally wrote it with someone else in mind, but realized it was the perfect fit for my album as I wanted to expand into a different sound. It became one of my favourite songs on the record because Iâm a sucker for crying-in-the-club tracks.â

Hatchie – Without A Blush
After a few singles, which were collected on her EP Sugar And Spice, 25-year-old Australian singer-songwriter/bassist Harriette Pilbeam (better known as Hatchie) has announced her debut album. Keepsake will be out on 21 June. Itâll feature 10 brand-new tracks, inspired by the likes of Cocteau Twins, Mazzy Star, and My Bloody Valentine.
One of these 10 songs is Hatchieâs new single Without A Blush. A dreamy, radio-friendly pop track. In a statement, Hatchie called the track âthe perfect introduction to the feelings and sounds on the rest of the recordâ.

Wildcard (week 51):
Wilsn – You Know Better
I recommended this great track earlier, but this week, You Know Better by Wilsn is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means itâll feature at the top of the blog for a full seven days!
Just like her biggest musical inspirations (Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, Etta James, Lauryn Hill, Donny Hathaway, Lianne La Havas and Whitney Houston) Geelong (Australia) native Shannon Busch is gifted with a great voice. With her equally strong pen, she writes songs that celebrate the rich history of soul, but are firmly rooted in the here and now. In 2015, she released her debut EP Donât Give It Up as Wilsn. She then spent a few years in Nashville, honing her craft with the help of Grammy Award winning writers.
Wilsn returned to Melbourne in 2019, when The Teskey Brothers asked her to open their sold out UK/Europe shows. During the 2020 lockdown, she headed back into the studio with producer Stephen Charles. Together, they brought to life what Wilsn had learned in the US. The resulting single, You Know Better, has a truly authentic, yet modern soul sound. Obviously, her voice is a highlight throughout, while the Stax style horns add a delicate vintage touch. A warm and rich song, delivered with attitude. For fans of Sharon Jones and Amy Winehouse.
No wonder then, that Wilsn recently signed with Ivy League Records. She joins the likes of The Teskey Brothers, and Carte Blanche Music favourites The Rubens, Hatchie, Shannen James and Mia Wray on the labelâs roster.

Carte Blanche Music Top 2020
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which Iâll publish tomorrow, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2020. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 994 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020. These findings are further evidence of the fact that the music radio stations play for you is far from representative of the wealth of great new music out there. Thankfully, there are blogs like Carte Blanche Music that are independent and unbiased, and donât want to please everybody at the same time. Weâre here to surprise you with great new music, no matter what genre or gender, origin or orientation. Just a few statistics:
- Judging from this Top 100 alone (let alone the full container playlist), 2020 was a great year for pure pop music, young artists, â80s influences, independent releases, the Australian music scene, queer pop-rock and female vocalists
- A whopping 70% of the tracks in this yearâs list feature female lead vocals (and I thought the 60% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 was impressive already)
- Overall, rock ruled. 54% of the tracks in my year-end chart is guitar-based (just over last yearâs tally)
- The list clearly shows there are more countries that produce great artists than Great-Britain and the United States alone. This year, more nationalities than ever are represented in my Top 100. Youâll also find artists from Armenia, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland
- As a result, although most lyrics are in English, youâll also hear songs (partly) sung in French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Swedish
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2020 features 100 tracks, which are presented below in alphabetical order. You can listen to them all via the Spotify player. If you prefer another order, just use the shuffle button đ.
