The Lighthouse – Pretty Classy
Following two EP’s in 2016 and 2017, The Lighthouse are about to put their debut album in the spotlights. The long-player, Whatever Comes Our Way, will see the light of day on 27 September. Ahead of it, the Belgian electronic pop band release its 4th, bass-heavy single.
Pretty Classy sounds fiercer than its predecessors, thanks to well-placed bursts of guitar over a bed of synths. A roaring mix between melodical alt-pop and stadium guitar rock.

The Lighthouse – Tel Aviv
Last November, Belgian band The Lighthouse scored a Carte Blanche Music Wildcard with their single Catch Fire. Now, three months on, they drop another dose of instant happiness.
Tel Aviv is telling the classic ‘the grass is greener on the other side of the fence’-story, where a woman is obsessed by an ad for Tel Aviv and desperately wants to go there to escape her everyday life. Not realizing that there’s more going on in the region than palm-tree beaches. The lyrics are written from both the man’s and the woman’s point of view, so the song takes you along on her energetic, uplifting dream-holiday and his incomprehension of her sudden urges.
Ahead of their upcoming debut album, which is expected in September, The Lighthouse will slowly drop some new tracks. Tel Aviv is the second, and already makes curious for the third!

The Lighthouse – Catch Fire
Last week, I introduced you to The Lighthouse’s new single. In the meantime, this great song really ‘caught fire’ with me (pun intended). Therefore, Catch Fire is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard! This means that The Lighthouse, as a true beacon, will feature prominently on the site for a whole week, shining its light upon all of us.
The Lighthouse are 5 Belgian guys who share the love of melodically well-written pop songs. They describe their musical cocktail of polyphonic vocals, guitars, keys and swinging drums as ‘songs that feel like Fridays’.
So far, the band put out two EPs: the self-released Let’s Make A Scene, and Joyride, which was backed by Sony Music. Despite the latter EP’s success, and the doors it opened to stages, festivals and radio stations in Belgium and abroad, The Lighthouse decided to go back to the indie-route for upcoming releases. Their debut album is already planned for the autumn of 2019.

This week marks the release of the long player’s first single. Catch Fire finds two people waking up after a wild night re-connecting with each other, asking the question if their relationship will ever really ‘catch fire’. A well-crafted sophisticated pop song that will surely delight the fans of bands like The 1975.

Carte Blanche Music Top 2018
Ahead of your favourites among this year’s Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which I publish on New Year’s Day, I round off 2018 with my personal choice.
The last year, I introduced you to 1104 great new songs via my container playlist Carte Blanche Music; over 65 hours of music. Exactly 500 of those translated into a written endorsement through this blog. In other words: only one out of each 11 suggestions (and one fifth of all of my posts) made it onto the Carte Blanche Music Top 2018.
I’m very proud of this year-end list, as it differs largely from the majority of charts you’ll find. Just a few statistics:
- 58% of the tracks feature female lead vocals (up from an already impressive 43% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2017)
- 43% of the tracks are guitar-based (rock is dead? Think again!)
- Apart from British and American acts, my list contains artists from Australia, Norway, the Netherlands, Canada, Spain, France, Belgium, Ireland, Estonia, Germany, Sweden, Hungary and South Korea
- By consequence, you’ll not only hear lyrics in English, but also in French, Hungarian, Spanish, Portuguese and Korean
- Needless to say, my year-end list contains no proper hits whatsoever 😉
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2018 features 100 tracks by 100 different artists. As making that choice was hard enough, the songs are sorted alphabetically. Just use the shuffle button if you prefer another order 😉.

Nowadays, with millions of artists all around the world putting their music on platforms like Spotify, available for everybody all over the planet, things are different. Of course, this month, you need to plow through all the well-intentioned Christmas mayhem (don’t look any further, these are the all-time highlights), but then you’ll find a wealth of great new tracks. By Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kakkmaddafakka, KT Tunstall, Smallpools or Underworld, for instance.

Although the same number of new tracks is released on Spotify as in other parts of the year, the quality shows the end of 2018 is near. Or perhaps it’s just me getting more critical as another great music year is drawing to a close 😉.
