L’Impératrice – Peur Des Filles
L’Impératrice is a group of six musicians, founded in 2012 by keyboard player Charles de Boisseguin. Only three years later, the current frontwoman, vocalist Flore Benguigui, joined the band. Her soft and sensual way of singing – typically French – largely defined the sound of their 2018 debut album Matahari.
Its follow-up is on its way: L’Impératrice’s sophomore album Tako Tsubo will be out on 26 March. Tako Tsubo is the official name for broken-heart syndrome, which manifests itself by a deformation of the heart due to an intense emotion – a negative or positive one. The album contains 13 songs, four of which have already been released as singles: Fou/Exit, Voodoo?, and Anomalie Bleue.
The fifth single just came out: Peur Des Filles, which translates as ‘afraid of girls’. It’s a witty and sarcastic ode to femininity, including all of the elements the group is known for. It sits somewhere halfway disco and chanson, with a touch of funk. And of course, there’s Benguigui’s voice.
Peur Des Filles comes with an absurd and colourful video, directed by Aube Perrie (Angèle). The clip references ‘Mars Attacks’ as well as ‘60s horror movies.

Julie & Joe – Marelle
Joe Moore is a prolific British producer, who is involved in countless projects. The Yearning, The Perfect Kiss, Lia Pamina, Cristina Quesada, and Maddie Mae, to name but a few. Now, he is also half of Julie & Joe. The other half is Julie Big, the singer of French band Le SuperHomard.
Julie & Joe just released their first mini album Marelle, and the title track is its second single. It’s a sugar-coated tribute to the synth-pop music that was made in France at the beginning of the eighties. Think of Elli Medeiros & Jacno, Lio, Mikado, etc. All of them singers with songs that were both playful and danceable. Meanwhile, you can also hear echoes of bands like New Order and Depeche Mode in Marelle. The first tones of the track must have been inspired by the opening of the latter’s People Are People.

Camélia Jordana – Silence
Camélia Jordana is a French singer and actress, who just turned 28. She first came to the scene when she finished third in TV talent show ‘Nouvelle Star’ in 2009. In her songs, she likes to depict everyday life from a woman’s perspective, including the imperfections that come with it.
Despite playing numerous roles in movies and TV series, she’s about to release her 4th album in 10 years’ time. Following first single Facile, Silence is the second track to be released off it. Elegant, fresh and gently bouncing, it sounds like a softer version of a reggaeton tune. Charmante, as they say in France!

Miss Machine – Tout Autour
Here’s more proof that the French music scene is full of talent at the moment. Today, I’d like to introduce you to Miss Machine, the alter-ego of young singer-songwriter Éloïse Boisseau. She grew up in a home where music was all around. Apart from the artists she heard via her parents, she discovered her own heroes as well. Arctic Monkeys, for instance, or Metric.
Miss Machine’s first 4-track EP, Tout Autour, comes out on 28 September. Ahead of it, its title track is her debut single. A beautiful song, combining ‘90s rock nostalgia, electronic pop sounds, and French chanson. Highly personal music, with lyrics that are both expressive and impressionistic.
While studying Philosophy, she continues recording new music in her home studio in Nantes. A new EP, or even a full album, will come out in 2021.

Mélodie Lauret – À Quoi Tu Penses Quand Tu M’adores ?
If you like a speak-singing delivery (where the artist alternates speaking with singing), French music has a lot to offer. Grand Corps Malade, for instance, is renowned for this characteristic style. So is Mélodie Lauret.
I’ve been a fan of Laurets ever since she debuted with her single 23h28, less than a year ago. In the meantime, she put out her first EP, and a second EP is slated for release in the autumn.
À Quoi Tu Penses Quand Tu M’adores ? (‘what do you think about when you make love to me?’) is the 20-year-old singer’s new single. As always, Lauret doesn’t wear her heart on her sleeve. This time, she narrates about the hazardous feelings that can affect a romantic relationship. The instrumentation is sparse, but very effective, pointing all your attention to the tormented lyrics. But even when you don’t understand a word, it’s a beautiful song, with a tangible melancholy.
