Wildcard (week 38):
Mélodie Lauret – 23h28
19. This girl is only 19 years old. And what a talent! To me, 23h28 by Mélodie Lauret may be one of the debuts of the year.
Her very first single is a musical coming out in more ways than one, and it’s utterly beautiful. If you speak French, the powerful lyrics will move you, whether you listen to them deliberately or not. Lauret doesn’t really sing the song, she speaks the words. A bit like Grand Corps Malade, whom I’m fond of as well. If you don’t speak French, there is enough to like in the overall melody. Or Mélodie, if you like. Slow beats, a sparse but effective bassline, eerie backing vocals… this is a real treat.
23h28 is a song in the best French ‘chanson’ tradition. Already picked up by a major record label, Mélodie Lauret is certainly one to watch. Her debut single is this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!
In the Wildcards 2019 playlist you can find all of this year’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcards so far.

Wildcard (week 26):
Videoclub – En Nuit
Historically, English has always been the language in charts all over the world. But this is slowly changing. In recent years, we’ve seen songs in Spanish crossing over to non-Spanish-speaking territories, and it’s my guess that French will be next. The number of great acts from France (and from the French-speaking part of Belgium) is overwhelming. And the fun part is: really young artists appear to lead the way to global stardom.
Remember Belgian singer-songwriter Angèle (23), whom I wrote about many times? Allow me to remind you she’s one to watch! But equally impressive is the career that Videoclub are building. The duo consists of Adèle Castillon (17), a YouTube phenomenon with over 650.000 followers, and her friend Matthieu Reynaud. With only two singles under their belt, they built a large fanbase, mainly in the US. I can see that from the huge number of Americans that read my recommendation of their second single Roi, and who find Carte Blanche Music via organic searches through terms like ‘videoclub roi’ (duh) and ‘videoclub french band’.
Now, the up and coming electro-pop teens are back with their third single. It’s called ‘En Nuit’, which means ‘at night’, but it’s also a play at ‘ennui’, meaning ‘boredom’. Another ultra-catchy song with sweet synth-pop sounds and gripping ‘ooh-ooh’s, that serve as a pleasant backdrop to Adèle and Matthieu’s youthful and sultry vocals. Don’t forget to check the video as well. It’s made by Aube Perrie, who also directed the clip for La Thune by Angèle.
This week, En Nuit by Videoclub is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Ethel – Rubikscube
This year, it’s 45 years ago that Rubik’s Cube was invented. It came to the market a year later, producing a world-wide craze. Since then, it went on to become the world’s best-selling toy.
All that many years later, the puzzle continues to inspire people. Ethel Ghrenass for instance, a 19-year-old singer-songwriter from Paris, who is currently based in London, where she just released her first single. Its title? Rubikscube…

Gemme – Sweet Harmony
Some songs have been covered more often than you’d think. Sweet Harmony by The Beloved, for instance. One of the most recent versions of that 1992 classic was recorded a year and a half ago by She Drew The Gun, and now, a new cover has come out. But let me start at the beginning…
During the 1980s, Xavier Jamaux was drummer in French indie-rock band Orange. Two of his fellow-members, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, famously went on to form Air and scored hits like Sexy Boy, All I Need and Kelly Watch The Stars. After Orange, Jamaux composed music for numerous films and commercials, and made many remixes.
His most recent project is called Gemme. Appropriately, Gemme is a female name, but also means ‘jewel’. As a project, Gemme is a jewel as well, consisting of five French and Belgian female singers: Nubia Esteban (the daughter of Lio, whose 1980 hit Amoureux Solitaires you may remember), Loane, Alka Balbir, Barbara Carlotti and Elodie Frégé. Their debut single is a cover of – as you might have guessed – Sweet Harmony by The Beloved. Next to the English choruses, however, the verses have been translated in French, making this a real Frenglish affair. In the sensual black and white video, Helena Noguerra (Lio’s half-sister) also plays a role.
The French word ‘gemme’ is pronounced as ‘j’aime’, and it’s true: I love it!
