Owl Eyes – You And I / Le Soleil
Owl Eyes is the artist name of Australian pop darling Brooke Addamo from Melbourne. She rose to fame in 2008, when she finished 11th in the 6th season of Australian Idol. In 2010, she released her debut EP Faces.
Owl Eyes just released a good old double A-sided single. The second track, Le Soleil, sounds like a chanson straight from the seventies. This feeling is strengthened by the lush strings, easy-going percussion and male parlando, spoken in French.
The first track however, has a distinctively different feel to it, although it also refers to the seventies. You And I sounds like a lost Donna Summer track, produced by the legendary Giorgio Moroder. An epic, up-beat tune!
Although very different, both tracks were helmed by the same person. Like her other recent singles, You And I and Le Soleil were co-written and produced by the Belgian/Italian dance producer, singer-songwriter en deejay Vito De Luca, well-known for his own musical outfit Aeroplane. A very fruitful collaboration!

Vendredi Sur Mer – La Nuit
Vendredi Sur Mer is the stage name of Swiss singer Charline Mignot. She may be relatively new to the music scene, but she already manages to inspire other artists. For instance, if you want to know how Canadian singer Munya’s track Hotel Delmano came about, read this. And she also inspired me, for her most recent single Chewing-Gum was the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, just five weeks ago.
Last week, Vendredi Sur Mer released her first album Premiers Émois. A very, very promising debut. Sensual and seductive like a female Serge Gainsbourg, and totally convincing as such. Especially because she appears to be great live as well.
The album contains 17 tracks, four of which also appeared on her first EP Marée Basse. La Nuit, with its synth intro, deep, dark bass and Mignot’s trademark speak-sing delivery, is one of my favourite songs among the other 13.

Vendredi Sur Mer – Chewing-Gum
French music is the most sensual music around. There, I said it!
Feel free not to believe me (or even to disagree), but for me, Vendredi Sur Mer’s new single Chewing-Gum is just another affirmation of my thesis. Only a few years on the scene, Swiss-born Charline Mignot already inspired Munya’s song Hotel Delmaro, and her star is rising fast.
22 March, Vendredi Sur Mer’s debut album Premiers Émois will be released. Ahead of it, the singer unveils her new single Chewing-Gum. A song with the classic ingredients, that make me so fond of French music. Basically a chanson, it’s also got a funky groove (that bassline!) and even features a flute and a xylophone. Throughout, Mignot displays her typical vocal style, halfway between singing and speaking. All of this creates an atmosphere of sensuality only matched by certain latin songs, in my opinion.
Chewing-Gum is as catchy and sticky as one can expect from a song with that title. It’s this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Videoclub – Roi
At the tender age of 17, Adèle Castillon has quite a career already. After quickly rising to fame as a YouTube personality, she was asked to play roles in several French movies. And now, she added singing to her CV. Together with fellow teen, singer-songwriter Matthieu Reynaud (son of French jazz guitarist Régis Reynaud), she forms Videoclub.
After releasing their debut single Amour Plastique in September 2018, Roi (‘king’) is only their second outing. A lovely electronic pop song with classic chanson melodies, coupled with eighties-influenced raps. This song couldn’t have come from any other country than France…

Welcome to the 1000th post on Carte Blanche Music. It follows the week that was obviously the first after the holidays. New Music Friday counted a huge number of new releases, many of which by ‘high profile’ artists. But, to be honest, a lot of them disappointed me. Since I don’t pretend to serve up a complete list of new songs, and only want to present you with great new music, I added only a convenient amount of tracks to my container playlist Carte Blanche Music. Munya – Hotel Delmano
Do you like French pop music like Air and Charlotte Gainsbourg? Montreal-based singer, songwriter and producer Josianne Boivin, aka Munya, certainly does. She’s classically trained in piano, jazz, and opera, and combines her extensive musical education and Francophilia into atmospheric synth-pop that simultaneously feels nostalgic and modern. Call her a romantic retro-futurist.
Her next EP (out on 5 October) is called Delmano, and it’s named after Hotel Delmano, a fancy cocktail bar in Williamsburg. The title track is about encountering a blue-skinned woman in that cocktail bar. Boivin says about it: “There is a French band named Vendredi Sur Mer and I just fell in love with their music video of ‘La Femme À La Peau Bleue.’ I watched it so many times that she entered my dreams, once we were having a drink at Hotel Delmano. The song is about that dream.”
