Wernerâs Weekly (week 39)
Christine & The Queens, Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians, Imagine Dragons, India.Arie, Johnny Marr, Primal Scream, Public Service Broadcasting, Rita Ora and White Lies are all wonderful artists with great new singles. All of these, and many more, have been freshly added to my constantly updated Spotify-playlist Carte Blanche Music, which contains the best new music of this year, so far. The past week, this list grew with 40 titles and now holds almost 850 tracks, good for over 50 hours of excellent music.
If thatâs too much for now (no offence), I can recommend Wernerâs Weekly, your compass to the music that matters. This âbest of the bestâ playlist features only 6 songs that donât take more than 23 minutes of your time. You can listen to them via the Wernerâs Weekly player in the sidebar. While youâre at it, you can read my original recommendations by clicking the links below. Enjoy!

Gecko Turner – Cortando Bajito
I recently wrote about Gecko Turnerâs single Un LimĂłn En La Cabeza. If you donât know this Spanish musician and singer/songwriter yet, his upcoming compilation Soniquete: The Sensational Sound Of Gecko Turner will give you a great introduction. Itâll be out on 12 October, the date that marks the 15th anniversary of his first solo album, Guapapasea!
Ahead of the âbest ofâ album, Turner releases a new single. Cortando Bajito, the one brand new track on Soniquete, is irresistibly groovy, featuring an unstoppable rhythm section. The funky keys make for a certified floor-filler, while Turner throws in his trademark Spanish-to-English-and-back-again vocals. I dare you to try not to sway your hips to this one!

Wernerâs Weekly (week 38)
Out of the many, many new songs that were released last week, I added only the 29 very best to my 2018 container playlist Carte Blanche Music. Among them well-known artists like Richard Ashcroft, Ben Folds, Hooverphonic, Lenny Kravitz, Amy Macdonald, Novastar and The Smashing Pumpkins, but also a lot of emerging acts and other artists that havenât yet been embraced by the media and/or the public yet. Itâs those acts that this blog focuses on, but I donât shy away from recommending great new songs by established artists.
Todayâs edition of Wernerâs Weekly offers the latest two Carte Blanche Music Wildcards plus a fine collection out of all of the categories I mentioned, presented in alphabetical order. This makes it your compass to the music that matters, as alwaysâŠ
- Sigala feat. Ella Eyre, Meghan Trainor & French Montana – Just Got Paid (Wildcard this week)
- Bernhoft & The Fashion Bruises – Humanoid (Wildcard last week)
- Alice Merton – Why So Serious
- Confidence Man – Try Your Luck
- Corine – Maquillage
- Florence & The Machine – Patricia
- Hozier (feat. Mavis Staples) – Nina Cried Power
The links above point you to more information about the songs, all of which you can listen to via the Wernerâs Weekly player in the sidebar.

Corine – Maquillage
French pop music often has a touch of retro kitsch. And I mean that in the most positive way, for I love French music. In Corine, a new disco diva has stood up. I wrote about her before, when she released her single Il Fait Chaud. Her new song Maquillage (French for make-up) is another feminine (and feminist) disco pop hymn.
After two EPâs, Fille De Ta RĂ©gion and Fille De Ta RĂ©gion (Vol. 2), Maquillage is the first single off Corineâs debut album Fille Le Jour, HĂ©roĂŻne La Nuit (âgirl at daytime, heroin at nightâ), that comes out on 16 November.

Wernerâs Weekly (week 36)
For most of us, the summer holidays are over. If you, too, enjoyed some nice weeks off, you may have a feeling you missed out on a lot of great new music. And indeed, you did đ.
But catching up is easier than ever these days. Iâve continued to update my âbest of 2018â playlist Carte Blanche Music on a daily basis, so if you follow it and sort it by ârecently addedâ (or through the calendar icon on your desktop app), the latest new songs are automatically displayed at the top of the list. Youâre welcome!
Last week, I added new music by Jonathan Jeremiah, Muse, Nothing But Thieves, The Struts feat. Kesha, Twenty One Pilots, The Wombats and others. You can find the most recent Wildcards and the other tracks that particularly stood out below. Theyâre presented in alphabetical order in my âbest of the bestâ playlist Wernerâs Weekly, your compass to the music that matters:
- Lauren Daigle – Still Rolling Stones (Wildcard this week)
- Say Lou Lou – Golden Child (Wildcard last week)
- Barns Courtney – â99â
- Eckhardt & The House – Put Me In A Cape

Eckhardt & The House – Put Me In A Cape
The higher the tempo in Eckhardt & The Houseâs music, the faster their star begins to rise. Good news for them then, that their new single is an up-tempo affair. Their most energetic song to date, to be exact.
In recent months, Eckhardt & The House developed a danceable indie sound, based on elements from pop to avant-garde to disco-funk. However, they managed to turn these influences into a unique sound of their own. Remember their great single If She Cannot Talk? This one is even better.
More than ever, Put Me In A Cape sounds like itâs the eighties all over again, and Iâd be the last to vote against that. The song is full of retro ingredients, wrapped in smooth, contemporary production. Not only made for playlists, but sure to become a live staple as well!

Wernerâs Weekly (week 30)
A-typically, since itâs mid-summer, last week was a good one for rock music. Adelitas Way, Imagine Dragons, Man With A Mission, Metric, and Spring King are among the acts that delivered great guitar tracks, all of which you can find in my 2018 container playlist Carte Blanche Music. But it also welcomes new songs by Mary J. Blige, David Bowie, Kodaline, and Muse, to name but a few. In other words: it comes close to the holy grail of music discovery đ.
If you have less time, or trust me to make the right choices for you, Wernerâs Weekly is your compass to the music that matters. Always short and snappy, with only the best of the best new music. The songs are listed below and you can listen to them all through the Wernerâs Weekly player in the sidebar. Click the links for more background!

- Satellite Stories – Carried Away (Wildcard last week)
- Joan – Stop And Stare

A diverse set of music acts, ranging from Suede and The Hunna, via Galantis and Sigrid to Sofi Tukker and Confidence Man, was added to my 2018 gross list Carte Blanche Music last week. Itâs impossible for me to review all of those tracks here, so please follow that list for a bigger picture of great new music. All killers, no fillers.
Every Monday I present you with a more condensed overview. Wernerâs Weekly features only the best of the best, and is your compass to the music that matters. You can listen to them all via the Wernerâs Weekly player in the sidebar and get more information by clicking the links below. Enjoy!

Wildcard (week 28):
Satellite Stories – Carried Away
Satellite Stories is the most successful Finnish indie band ever, with over 60 million streams to their name, as well as playing 300 headline shows in 17 countries on three continents (record labels donât lie about that kind of stuff, you know).
Next question, then, is: why have they decided to call it quits? I can only imagine they intended to stop at their peak. If thatâs indeed the case, they did a wonderful job with this new single. I think itâs their best yet.
Carried Away will of course be featured on the bandâs final album Cut Out The Lights, out on 7 September. A week later, Satellite Stories begin a farewell tour through Europe, which ends on 27 October in Oulu, the Finnish town where the band was formed, 10 years ago.
As a thank you to this wonderful band, Carried Away by Satellite Stories is this weekâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcard (all of which you can find in the Wildcards 2018 playlist). Stream it as much as you can and make it their biggest hit ever! Enjoy it while it lastsâŠ

Ătienne Daho feat. Flavien Berger – AprĂšs Le Blitz
French singer-songwriter Ătienne Daho had his first successes in 1984 and worked with William Orbit, to name but one, long before he gained international recognition. At the end of last year, Daho released his 11th studio album Blitz, which he recorded in London. Its title is a reference to the climate in the city after the Brexit and the terrorist attacks. Clearly, itâs not his most uplifting work to date.
First single Les Flocons De L’Ă©tĂ© relates to the month of August 2013, which he spent in a hospital, after almost dying from peritonitis. Second single Le Jardin is an ode to his sister, who went missing in 2016. AprĂšs Le Blitz, which lasts over 6,5 minutes on the album, has been edited for release as Dahoâs new single.
