Texas – Let’s Work It Out
Before Johnny McElhone formed Texas with singer Sharleen Spiteri, he had enjoyed some success with his bands Altered Images and Hipsway. But Texas really hit the bull’s eye and scored hits like I Don’t Want A Lover, Say What You Want (I personally prefer this original to the remixed version featuring Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man and RZA), Summer Son and Inner Smile.
On 21 April, Texas put out their ninth album Jump On Board. First single Let’s Work It Out, with its funky, Rock Your Baby-like guitar lick is already available. The video stars ‘retired’ (the guy is 39!) professional footballer Thierry Henry driving a car and Sharleen dancing before a green screen, basically. What more do you need? 😉

Wildcard (week 4):
-M- (feat. Fatoumata Diawara & Oxmo Puccino) – Bal De Bamako
-M- is the stage name of French singer-songwriter and guitarist Matthieu Chedid. This year it’s 20 years ago that his debut record came out. In March he releases his sixth album Lamomali. -M- recorded it with Malian musicians Toumani Diabaté and Sidiki Diabaté.
The first single off the album, the brilliant Bal De Bamako, features singer Fatoumata Diawara and rapper Oxmo Puccino, who are both originally from Mali as well. The track combines disco, funk, hip hop and world music into one swinging mix (or should I say ‘melange’?). While listening how that sounds, take a closer look at the beautiful artwork. Things are not always what they seem…
The whole week, this great song will feature prominently on this blog, as it’s the new Wildcard!

Thanks (feat. Sam Sparro) – Your Man
Thanks are a Danish production duo with a special liking for disco. On their SoundCloud-page they published several mixtapes and songs of their own this year. On their new single Your Man they join forces with Australian singer-songwriter Sam Sparro (although uncredited), best known for his 2008 hit Black And Gold.
Thanks say about the collaboration: “We’ve always been big fans of Sam and have been dreaming to work with him on a Thanks track. We love a lot of the same music: Prince, disco, funk, French house… and it’s super exciting for us to be able to put out this track together.”
This is what it sounds like when doves cry:
