Dopapod – Black Holes
Dopapod. Is that a bird? Is it a plane? Is it even a word? Not really. Itâs a band. And Dopapod is a palindrome, which means you read the same forward as backward. Since 2009, they released six albums: Radar, Drawn Onward, Redivider, Never Odd Or Even, Megagem and Emit Time. A self-titled seventh record will be out on 27 May. Now watch all of those titles closely. Does something strike you? Theyâre all palindromes as well!
The band states that symmetry and balance are integral parts of the way they work. A difficult task, for theyâve got a wide range of inspirations. In Podapodâs music, youâll hear rock, disco, funk, jazz, bluegrass, electronica and much more. And listening to the way they combine all of that into a melting pot of their own, one canât help but thinking these guys like mathemetics as well. This is complex music, but injected with a fair dose of humour.
It wonât surprise you Dopapod was formed at Berklee College Of Music, by Eli Winderman (keyboards, vocals), Rob Compa (guitar, vocals), Neal âFroâ Evans (drums) and Chuck Jones (bass). Since the start in 2007, the band played hundreds of shows (per year!), building a loyal fanbase.
New single Black Holes is sure to please their followers. Itâs as groovy as ever, with a fat beat thatâll make even the stiffest of us dance. If not, please check your pulse!

Specialists – I Got You
Specialists were formed in New York in 2017 by singer/guitarist Will Harden and bassist/producer Mikey Rotunno. As a duo, they composed works for bands of various sizes, across a multitude of genres. In the process, they evolved into a fully-fledged quartet, featuring Christian Hickey on drums and Pete Harden on keys. Their sound, a fine blend of funk, rock, R&B and jazz, is built around layered guitar and vocals, driving electric bass and a contagious groove.
The band currently have three albums out, and a fourth full-length effort is scheduled for release this spring. I Got You is the first single to be released ahead of it. With a more dance-oriented sound, it paints a neat picture of what to expect from the upcoming record. The disco bassline is a distinctive part of the song. Itâs complemented with pop/rock verses, a slap bass chorus and EDM-influences. All ingredients to get you on your feet are present. Lyrically, the song is about Will and Mikeyâs close and ever-growing friendship.

St. Lucia – Rocket On My Feet
In the current musical climate, itâs rather unusual for an act to wait four years before releasing new material. But in my opinion, choosing quality over quantity is always a good idea. And thatâs exactly what husband-and-wife duo Jean-Philip Grobler (born in South Africa) and Patti Beranek (from Germany) have done.
Rocket On My Feet is Brooklyn-based St. Luciaâs first single since 2018; their debut on new label home Nettwerk Records. The track starts with a synth-driven beat before launching an undeniably groovy crescendo of punchy drums, airy vocals, and slick guitar melodies. With its shimmery pop grooves, it sounds like a disco-fied version of Killing Jokeâs Love Like Blood.
âIn a way, this is my personal rebellion against the darkness of the world,â states Jean-Philip. âItâs easy to feel depressed these days, so Iâm trying to bring something joyous to the world. I was sick of seeing shit on the Internet, and I just wanted to feel good. Thatâs what being human is about. We have to feel alive, no matter what is happening around us.â

Alice Offley – Pour (Your Love On Me)
Do you like disco, funk and other kinds of feel-good music? Think Prince, Kylie Minogue, Chic, Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Billy Ocean or Moloko⌠If so, youâre in good company. Alice Offley loves them as well. And she knows what sheâs talking about. She happens to be a cousin of Dusty Springfield, and credits her family for her love of soul and disco music.
As a professional musician and singing bass player, she shared the stage with the likes of Thompson Twins, Tricky and Cyndi Lauper. Having toured internationally with bands and solo since she was a teenager, she built a great live reputation.
As said, Offley is a solo artist as well. Her day job is singing and playing piano in London bars. In 2020, she put out two singles, which are now followed by new track Pour (Your Love On Me). A sultry disco stomper with funky guitars and, obviously, a prominent bassline.
Offley says about the tune: âIâd written a fair few songs about heartbreak and loss, and I wanted to focus my next batch of material on happier subjects. Pour is about lots of feel-good things in life – from new love to sugar, angel delight, dancing, drinking, and fun!â

Greatest Hits is the project of Australian writer/producer/musician Ryan Cooper, and a collective of friends from around the globe. They toured extensively with the bands Hollow Coves and Halfnoise (Zac Farro of Paramore).
