Hedda Mae – Rhythm To Myself
Hedda Mae tracks have been on the Carte Blanche Music playlist for a few years in a row now, and her new single only affirms our fandom. Many of her contemporaries indulge in self-pity and produce emo-core or dark-pop in their bedrooms. But this rising talent from Norway has chosen a more cheerful path.
So far, Hedda and her collaborator Benjamin GiĂžrtz wrapped her tunes in a nu-disco sound. New single Rhythm To Myself however leans more towards the â90s. Its Eric Prydz-like pumping beat almost drowns in epic synths, while sound effects, cowbells and funky guitars lighten it up.
Hedda calls the track âan in your face bop about being done wasting time on people who lower your spirits, when all you wanna do is have fun – and danceâ. She adds: âWho says weâre dependent on others to have a good time? With Rhythm To Myself, the quirkiness and playfulness in the Hedda Mae universe are taken to a new level. Not everything has to be so serious all the time!â
Following Introducing: Hedda Mae and The Early Struggles Of A Late Millennial, sheâll complete her planned trilogy of EPâs this autumn. Also, a full album is on its way.

Darinka – Howâs The View?
Darinka is the artist name that Los Angeles-based actress ChloĂ« Berlinger uses for her musical career. A career which starts right now, by the way, for Howâs The View? is only her debut single. Although sheâs been writing music for as long as she can remember, this was also the first song she ever recorded, and itâs been a long time coming. Production for the track began in 2019’s pre-pandemic era and was only completed in October of 2021.
As a young girl, Berlinger was a metal head and pop-punk aficionado. Nowadays, Darlinka draws inspiration from all things creepy, mental health, film and influences like Marina & The Diamonds and Lorde. She uses dense synths, dark lyricism and traditional acoustic instruments to create her own style of alternative electro-pop. Or in her own words: âgrim pop musicâ. Lyrically, Howâs The View? touches upon the wealth gap in America.

Nazzereene – Thatâs How I Like It
Nazzereene Taleb, from Melbourne, Australia, started out as a dancer at the age of 9. A few years later, inspired by the likes of Rihanna, Bruno Mars and The Weeknd, she decided to switch to singing and song-writing. Her father was her vocal coach. At 18, she impressed the superstar judges from âX Factorâ, followed by a successful appearance in âThe Voiceâ.
Her performances didnât go unnoticed. Soon, Nazzereene was offered musical collaborations with Tensnake, Sick Individuals and Firebeatz, to name but a few. She accepted, obviously. But eventually, she wanted to release her own tracks.
Thatâs How I Like It is her new, self-written single. The production is clean and cool, but still manages to sound organic. Despite its retro-disco feel, itâs a timeless song.

Brooke – Thatâs Rich
Ireland has won the Eurovision Song Contest seven times. Johnny Logan famously triumphed twice (in 1980 and 1987) and there was a real hattrick in 1992, â93 and â94. The latest victory however was in 1996. This year, in a new effort to secure the top slot, the country sends 23-year-old Brooke Scullion to Italy.
The singer and songwriter from Derry was a finalist of âThe Voice UKâ 2020. She won her spot to represent Ireland at Eurovision 2022 in Turin after a show-stopping performance of Thatâs Rich on RTE’s âLate Late Show Eurosong Specialâ. She beat five other competitors. Following some comments after the broadcast, she tweaked the track a little more, so the version now available on streaming services is âfinalâ. Talking of which, Iâm sure this tune will at least secure Ireland a placement in the ESC final. Iâm even confident itâll do very well in that second round as well.
Mainly inspired by Blondie and Gossip, Thatâs Rich is a fiery and empowering single. Itâs a modern pop song that narrates how you should never settle for anyone who doesnât fulfil your needs. Bizarrely, this is the first track Brooke ever wrote. That being said, itâs only the second single sheâs ever released.

The New Shining – Thief
Life isnât all joy and pleasure. It never has been, by the way. Yet, only the last years more and more artists share their darker sides. Thatâs great, for openness can create more understanding.
Dutch singer and guitarist Xander Stok has been dealing with depression for over 20 years now. Music, whether it’s writing or making it, has always been his medicine to keep sane amidst increasing insanity. Thatâs why the just released album of his band The New Shining is called Antidote. The record is dedicated to depression awareness.
Itâs Xanderâs passion to give a voice to the invisibles, the people living with a mental illness. Therefore, the album features songs of comfort and pain, hope and defeat, truth and deceit, struggle and victory, light and darkness, poison and Antidote.
Thief is The New Shiningâs new single. A dark track with impressive synths, a beautiful drum sound and great guitars during the epic end part.
The band have this to say about Thief: âDepression robs you of joy, steals what makes you ‘You’ and casts a shadow over your life. It poisons everything you are, feel and do. Just like when people you love, you trust, betray you and take advantage of you. It’s traumatising. Beware of the thief that comes to steal and destroyâŠ.â

xPropaganda – Donât (You Mess With Me)
ZTT (Zang Tuum Tumb) is one of my all-time favourite record labels. It was founded in 1983 by legendary record producer Trevor Horn, his wife and businesswoman Jill Sinclair, and NME journalist Paul Morley. In the â80s alone, it was the home of acts like Frankie Goes To Hollywood, The Art Of Noise, Grace Jones and Propaganda.
In 2022, the label still exists. Its first signing of the 2020s is the act xPropaganda. And that name says it all. The band consists of Claudia BrĂŒcken and Susanne Freytag, who were in Propaganda before. Their former engineer and producer Stephen Lipson (who also worked with Pet Shop Boys, Simple Minds, Paul McCartney, Bastille and many others) is onboard as well.
In May, the band release their album The Heart Is Strange. Itâs preceded by first single Donât (You Mess With Me), an unmistakable Propaganda electro-pop track with lyrics in English and German.
