Van Echelpoel – Ziet Em Duun
Some tracks take a little more time to sink in than others. This is one of them. But I presume that if thatâs the case with me, it might be the same with you. And above all: itâs never too late to introduce you to a good piece of music.
I already mentioned this one yesterday, when it entered the European Border Breakers Chart. Van Echelpoel is a Belgian hip hop duo thatâs singing in a Flemish dialect. A dialect that is so different to Dutch, that even people from the Netherlands can hardly understand it. But music is a universal language, and rather than about the lyrics, this track is about its pounding beat and its tremendous drive.
If you like Yello, youâll like Ziet Em Duun by Van Echelpoel. If you donât like Yello, youâll like it as well. Come on, donât be shy, try it!

Urban Cone – Old School
When Swedish band Urban Cone was formed, in 2010, all four members were attending the same high school. They make feel-good electro-pop, which consistently takes the shape of irresistible tracks.
After touring with fellow Swedish rising star Tove Lo and The Griswolds, they are now ready to unleash their third album A Whole Lifetime Of Happiness. The songs – the band says – are âanchored by harder, hip-hop-influenced beats and funky guitarsâ, but that doesnât prevent this new single from being every bit as catchy as their earlier output.

Dagny – Backbeat
In October 2015 Norwegian singer Dagny Sandvik released her single Backbeat. By that time she had been living in London for some time yet, where she worked on her debut album with other songwriters. In January last year I saw her show at the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival. There still was no album, but she played a lot of tracks off it (presumably). One even catchier than the other. After that performance I made Backbeat the track of the week in my radio show and it ended up as one of my favourites of 2016.
That year, Dagny also released Foolâs Gold (a duet with Børns) and the Ultraviolet EP, all surrounded with little promotion. Hopefully all this is about to change, as Backbeat has yet to be released properly in the UK. The date has been pushed back several times already, but has now been set at 10 February. Hopefully it will be a big hit as yet, triggering a re-release in other countries. Click and enjoy!

Archive – The False Foundation
Archive was formed in London as a trip-hop band, back in 1994. Now, ten studio albums later, they combine electronic and rock in a hybrid of their own.
In October last year they released they latest album, The False Foundation. The title track has been chosen as the third single off it. The band couples a pulsating rhythm, that brings on flashbacks to the eighties, with layers of guitars and industrial sound effects without losing sight of the melody. Itâs actually just a pop song in disguise.

Georgia – Feel It
Georgia Barnes is the 25 year old daughter of Leftfieldâs Neil Barnes, so no-one was surprised when she started a musical career for herself. She developed into a multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter, who only released her self-titled debut album in 2015. On the back of that the London-based artist criss-crossed the continent in 2016 on a hectic touring schedule.
Now sheâs back with an energetic, beat-laden new track. Thatâs no surprise either, since Georgia is a very promising drummer herself. The video shows five other female drummers of all ages and backgrounds, expressing what they feel when playing. The universal message, according to Georgia, is âthat whoever you are or wherever youâre from, we all share rhythm and heightened feelingsâ.

Wildcard (week 3): Powers – Dance
Powers is the musical partnership of Mike Del Rio and Crista Ru. They have written songs for Kylie Minogue, Christina Aguilera, Selena Gomez and others, and I first saw them being credited in their own right on the 2014 track Classic by The Knocks (feat. Powers).
They have now announced their debut album Alpha, which is scheduled for release on 7 April. The promising first single is Dance, a damn fine slice of power(s) pop that combines pounding beats, heavy guitar strikes, cheesy âwoo-ooo-ooosâ and lyrics where riots on the dance floor go hand in hand with social criticism. Or, in summary: a banger!

Alma – Dye My Hair
One week before the start of this blog, Almaâs Dye My Hair was the last Wildcard of 2016. Now that Iâve seen her perform at showcase festival Eurosonic Noorderslag, last Thursday, I feel the urge to bring it to your attention as yet. Consider it my present to her, because today, 17 January, itâs her birthday. Happy 21st anniversary Alma!
Alma is Finnish singer-songwriter Alma-Sofia Miettinen. A few years ago, when she was 17, she participated in television talent show Idols, where she finished fifth. Last summer, at the age of 20, she released her debut single Karma. A great track with equal parts deep house, r&b and pop, that went on to become a huge hit in the European Border Breakers Charts. Actually, it was this one track that landed her at Eurosonic Noorderslag; there simply was nothing more to judge at the timeâŚ
The festival bookers did a good job giving Alma this platform. She has a great voice, that is even enhanced on stage by her sister, who doubles pretty much all vocals. Their voices go very well together. Behind the singing pair, the beats are produced by three musicians behind launch pads, one of whom also plays guitar.
And now, there is this second single, Dye My Hair. It contains the same infectious ingredients as her debut, and deserves to become her breakthrough hit. Once that has happened, a re-release of Karma would be a great idea!
