Harper Bloom – Sydney Road
If you need more cowbell, try Harper Bloomâs new single Sydney Road. Other prominent elements in this sunny song are the ukulele, a catchy chorus and honest lyrics. The track is a homage to the suburb of Brunswick in Melbourne, where the singer-songwriter used to live.
âSydney Road was written at a time when I was moving out of Brunswick in Melbourneâs 2020 lockdown and reminiscing on all the amusing experiences Iâd had on Sydney Road, making amazing memories with strangersâ, Bloom explains. âThe song is based around myself and a neighbour I had at the time. We are both lonely in different ways, and we are from completely different walks of life, but I reached out to her and we formed a unique and unlikely friendship which has become both incredibly valuable and rewarding.â
The video that comes with the single was shot on the first day out of the Melbourne lockdown in 2021. Filming took place on Sydney Road, obviously.

Eyjaa – The Wrecking Crew
Donât say I didnât warn you the first time around. Following Eyjaaâs very promising debut single Donât Forget About Me, Brynja and Sara Sverrisdottir make sure you wonât.
The Icelandic-Danish sisters lived in multiple big cities around the world and speak 7 different languages. Also, theyâre multi-instrumentalists. On top of that, the girls are blessed with angelic voices. Combine that with the support of the worldâs largest record company and one might think: what could possibly go wrong?
The Wrecking Crew is only Eyjaaâs second ever single, but a great confirmation of their talent. An atmospheric pop song with touches of folk, it revolves around the emotions of loneliness, and the acceptance and beauty of feeling sad. As they say themselves: âGoing through life we all experience challenges that we tend to overthink or simply misunderstand within ourselves. The Wrecking Crew is about how you are never alone with your thoughts. Really, it can be just as beautiful to be sad as it can to be happy. Itâs just human emotions, and they are not unknown to any of us.â

Louis Berry – Are You Alone?
Louis Berry launched a great new single, but alas it was largely overlooked last New Music Friday. Itâs called Are You Alone? and Iâd like to draw your attention to it. Especially because the title is appropriate in a sad way. In a message to his fans, Louis announced he caught COVID-19 âin a bad wayâ, and so has his 88-year-old grandad. Theyâre both in hospital right now. Hopefully, they can draw strength from the energy and power in this new single.
I bet heâll get better. Heâs a survivor. Louis was born in Liverpool to a heroin addict father and a mother desperate to keep him on the right side of the law. He once said about his youth: âThe only way I could get respect was by doing bad things.” Luckily, he eventually turned to music. Good for him; good for us.
Iâve been following Louis since his 2015 single .45. That was a blues-rock track. His new single Are You Alone? is another upbeat banger, and just a rootsy. Itâs folky in a Waterboys kind of way. You wonât regret taking 3 minutes of your time to get to know this one.
Get well soon Louis, and your grandad too!

PĂ€ter – float.ing
The world is changing, and young Canadian singer-songwriter PĂ€ter doesnât only describe and oppose the consequences, sheâs evolving herself as well. Not indifferent to the things happening around her, her lyrics always came from a very personal place. But often, they dealt with subjects in the outside world. On her new single, she invites us into her own realm. She describes float.ing as âa song very close to my heartâ. âIt was inspired by the bittersweet joy of being with someone you love, knowing it’s not going to last.â
Obviously, this subject matter demanded a mellower musical direction. Expect a lovely, folky, indie-pop song. Simple, but with a delicate string arrangement.
Just over a year since the release of her debut single Dam, Damn, PÀter keeps developing impressively, gradually revealing more of the real person behind her musical project: Iran-born, Toronto-based Parmida Kakavand. A brave step forward and a promising start of more to come!

The Deep Blue – Jealous Sea
Manchester has always been a source of great pop music, and it continues to be so in 2021. Please meet the next band to cement the cityâs reputation: The Deep Blue. Theyâre a three-piece that spent the lockdown writing and recording their debut EP. All of its tracks are set to be released throughout this year.
Jealous Sea is their very first, and very pleasant single. Just like other recent bands such as Haim and Soda Blonde, The Deep Blue are clearly influenced by Fleetwood Mac. A great place to start, as far as Iâm concerned. However, the trio also throws a pinch of Taylor Swift into the mix. This results in a summer-y track with luscious harmonies and shimmering melodies, which blend indie, folk and pop.
Talking about this very promising introductory single, The Deep Blue explain: âYou know that feeling: when youâve lost a little bit of love for yourself and you see that person who has everything youâve ever wanted. In a world of endless scrolling through the lives of others, it can be difficult to keep your head above the jealous sea. We are all in danger of slipping under. Youâre not alone; sometimes we all want to be somebody else. Hereâs a song to get you through and dance the green away.â
