Babe Rainbow – Johny Says Stay Cool
‘Monkey disco’. Now that’s an interesting way for Babe Rainbow to describe their music. But what does it sound like? If the latest single Johny Says Stay Cool is anything to go by, there certainly are disco elements, alongside funk, psychedelic pop/rock and retro sixties grooves.
Babe Rainbow are an Australian trio, that already released over a handful of singles and an EP, but their self-titled debut album has yet to come out (in Europe, at least). Well, you can mark 1 September in your agenda! The LP (as you should call an album with this type of music on it) was produced by Eric Moore of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Johny Says Stay Cool is its new single. A lovely song that bears some resemblance to Heatwave’s Boogie Nights (their debut single from 1977).

My Baby – Make A Hundred
My Baby is a Dutch band, but they’re playing so many gigs outside their own country, that you probably know them already. If not: go and check them as soon as you can. Preferably live, because they’re ace! From the first note on, they put the pedal to the metal and only after the last note they hit the brakes. And in between? 100% pure groove!
My Baby mixes roots, funk, gospel and blues into what they call ‘voodoo trance’. That, combined with the hippie-like appearance of singer Cato van Dijck, especially, produces a Woodstock kind of feeling (as far as I know it by tradition, that is).
If you don’t know them yet, make sure you listen to the new single Make A Hundred, off their album Prehistoric Rhythm. I’m pretty sure that My Baby will soon be everybody’s favourite!

Static Panic – Fluid Funky Butter Sweet
Whether it’s pop, dance or rock, music gets so much better when the recipe contains a pinch of funk! Static Panic show impeccable taste in that respect. They’re a brand new trio, comprised of producer/performers Ro, Keston, and Eli. Hailing from Minneapolis, one can hear the influence of the purple one shine through. Both musically and lyrically, with themes like queerness, love and heartbreak.
The band’s debut single, the tongue twister Fluid Funky Butter Sweet, alongside another track they put out on streaming services (Lose You To The Night), is a fine introduction, preparing us for the release of their debut album, probably in the fall.
On 12 August Static Panic, together with eight other Minnesota acts, play a free festival in downtown Minneapolis. They will very likely draw the largest crowd in their young career, so if you happen to be in the neighbourhood…

Werner’s Weekly (week 29)
Summers used to be slow-moving as far as new music was concerned, but that has changed in recent years. Why would you wait to release your great new track until after the holidays, when all other artists release their great new tracks as well? Radio and streaming playlists (or listeners in general) are in need of good content the whole year round. No wonder then, that I could add new music from the likes of The Allergies, Arcade Hearts and Foster The People to my 2017 container playlist Carte Blanche Music last week.
Each Monday morning, I put my personal recommendations out of all new releases in Werner’s Weekly, an alphabetically sorted playlist, kicking off with the Carte Blanche Music Wildcards of this and last week. The Allergies (feat. Andy Cooper) – It Won’t Be Me
The Allergies is the production/DJ outfit from heavyweight DJ’s Rackabeat and Moneyshot, from Bristol, UK. They call it their mission to take vintage sounds and reshape them for the modern dancefloor, which they started doing in 2012.
After a few EP’s The Allergies released their first album As We Do Our Thing. Andy Cooper, one-third of Los Angeles rap trio Ugly Duckling, was one of the artists doing a guest performance on the record. He will also be present on their upcoming second full-length Push On, to be released on 28 July.
One of the tracks he will grace with his presence is It Won’t Be Me, The Allergies’s new single.

Jain – Dynabeat
Today, exactly half a year ago Jain collected her European Border Breakers Award in Groningen for being the most successful emerging French artist outside her home country. That same day, I introduced you to Dynabeat, my favourite of the six new tracks on her Zanaka EP (which had also been added to the Deluxe Edition of her same titled debut album).
Now, precisely six months later, the track is chosen as Jain’s new single. It comes with a video that is full of the kind of visual elements that made watching her earlier clips such fun. If only radio would embrace this great track, nothing would stop it from being one of the best songs on the airwaves this summer. Are you in?

Uncle Frank – Your Man
Did I ever mention Uncle Frank here? Oh yes, I did. And now, they’re back with a new single.
Your Man is the fifth track to be pulled from their recent album Love Lion. And it’s… different. Still funky, as we’ve gotten used to, but I dare describe this one as a ballad. A what?!?! A ballad milord, a down tempo love song. One with beautiful soul and R&B influences, in this case. You didn’t see that one coming, did you?
So lay down, take a deep breath, and relax. And hit that play button. Hit it hard!

Shaka Ponk – Mysterious Ways / Rocksta (feat. Skin, De Staat & KillASon)
For 13 years now, French band Shaka Ponk rocks and funks its way through the music business. The band consists of six members of flesh and blood and a computer animated monkey, Goz. It’s because of Goz that they called their new EP ApeTizer.
The EP features five tracks, two of which will feature on their next album, to be released on 17 November. One of them is the single Gung Ho. The other is my favourite track on the EP, the rather Beatlesque song Mysterious Ways.
My other favourite EP track is Rocksta, which will not appear on the album. It sounds like a great medley of Demagogue by Urban Dance Squad and (Rock) Superstar by Cypress Hill. Featured artists on Rocksta are Skin (Skunk Anansie), Torre Florim (Dutch band De Staat) and French rapper KillASon.
