Wildcard (week 26):
Eliza & The Bear – Higher
When these five Essex musicians got together in the autumn of 2011, all of them had given up trying to make it as super stars. They felt their efforts had failed, and it was time to return to real life. They started Eliza & The Bear as a hobby, just for fun.
Knowing this, you’ll understand why their songs are so happy and their trumpets so triumphant. They did what they loved to do most, without having to prove anything to anyone. There was no master plan.
But after the band started posting their recordings on their Facebook page, they caught the attention of blogs, managers and labels, and decided to become a real band after all. Last year, they released their self-titled debut album, but Higher is a brand new song. As joyous as ever…
And there’s one more reason to cheer, ‘cause Eliza & The Bear’s Higher is this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Dance À La Plage – Fever
Joe Hamilton is not only a fine promoter of other artists’ music (he used to work at Hart Media in London and is about to start at record label Play It Again Sam next month), but he is also a very decent musician and songwriter himself.
Dance À La Plage is his band and they released EP’s in 2012 and 2014. Three years later they managed to finish one more track ? and I like it! Fever sits somewhere halfway between two of my favourite acts: Phoenix and Jack Peñate.
It’s a pity Dance À La Plage aren’t more prolific, for I would like to hear more from them!

Jamiroquai – Superfresh
Imagine this: in 2017 it’s exactly 25 years ago Jamiroquai was formed. Now you’re feeling old, don’t you? Seven years ago Jay Kay and his band released their album Rock Dust Light Star and who would’ve thought it would take them ’till 2017 to come up with the follow-up?
This year, they finally put out their eighth album Automaton. Some of the tracks have a somewhat updated sound, experimental even. But to be honest, I’m most fond of the songs where Jamiroquai sounds like… well… Jamiroquai.
One of my favourite album tracks is the new single!

Pimpy Panda feat. Alana & NiCo Gomez – Don’t Give Up
If you dig Tower Of Power, be sure to check Pimpy Panda. You’re not going to believer they’re actually from Germany. I can hear you think: ‘funk and soul from Germany? Yeah right…’. But don’t judge before you heard it, they’re groovy!
Pimpy Panda just released their new album Pandrenalin as well, although it’s not yet available on streaming platforms. Schade… Don’t Give Up is the new single!

Gamba – Don’t Leave The Boy Behind
Even if you don’t like king prawns, you’re sure to enjoy this band. Gamba is an Australian act, with at its core singer and primary songwriter Tessa S., who is surrounded by a four-piece band. They only started in late 2014, citing Fleetwood Mac, Corinne Bailey Rae, Lianne La Havas and even Oasis as their influences.
Leave The Boy Behind, apparently inspired by an awkward and painful separation, is Gamba’s debut single. It was rewritten and produced many times before it finally ended up on tape. “It revels in the frustration of not letting go of someone, despite the consequences or personal ramifications, and celebrates the weakness of toxic attraction,” songwriter Tessa says on the creation of the track.
Leave The Boy Behind is part of Gamba’s first EP, that’ll come out later.

Kita Menari – Young Lovers
Kita Menari is the new band of Micha de Jonge, formerly one half of the duo Me & Mr. Jansen. De Jonge came up with this band name after he ran out of oxygen while diving in Malaysia. After this near death experience, he decided to start living life to the fullest. Kita Menari is Malaysian for ‘we dance’, a metaphor for this change of spirit.
Young Lovers is the band’s debut single, which has a sound half-way between Phoenix and Foster The People. Kita Menari is off to a good start!

Confidence Man – Bubblegum
Since launching in 1990, Heavenly Recordings has proven to be a tastemaker record label, discovering artists like Manic Street Preachers, Saint Etienne and Doves. More recently, Heavenly gave us Temples, proving they still have a good ear for great music.
One of the latest signings on the label is Australian four-piece Confidence Man, who just came out with their official debut single Bubblegum. As the title suggests it’s pure pop music, but full of groove. Talking of which… it instantly brings back memories of Deee-Lite’s Groove Is In The Heart. We’re going to dance, and have some fun…
