Werner’s Weekly (week 16)
I hope you didn’t over-eat yet, for I’ve got a bucket full of Easter eggs left for you. It’s a hand-picked selection of new tracks, like I present to you each Monday morning. Out of all the songs I recommended on this blog last week, only the very best made it to Werner’s Weekly.
As a rule (and a commitment) this week’s and last week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard are part of the bunch. The rest of them are presented in alphabetical order and deserve to be put forward once more.
Well, this is that special moment…
- The Kooks – Be Who You Are (this week’s Wildcard)
- Kasabian – Comeback Kid (last week’s Wildcard)
- Incubus – Undefeated
- Kutie With A K – Rollercoaster Ride
- My Baby – Make A Hundred
- Roads To Roam – Safe
- Uncle Frank – Ku Ku Nu
If you want to read more about any of these tracks, just click the respective link. You can listen to them via the Werner’s Weekly player in the sidebar.
For further listening you might want to follow my Carte Blanche Music playlist, which contains much more music than I can write about and that enables you to discover even more new songs, and quicker as well. Just sort the playlist so, that is shows the most recent tracks on top, and never miss a great new song again! The green Carte Blanche Music logo/button in the sidebar brings you to the playlist directly!

Uncle Frank – Ku Ku Nu
After 2015’s Maximum Respect and 2016’s Fountains, this year The Fun Lovin’ Criminal’s drummer Frank Benbini and his mate Naim Cortazzi came up with the album Love Lion, containing both singles. To celebrate the release, Uncle Frank put out not one, but two new singles: Love Lion and Tokyo.
After four singles, the album isn’t done yet, because there’s more great music where these are coming from. Today, I give you Ku Ku Nu. A funky slice of pop that deserves to be a future single!
Naim tells Carte Blanche Music about the track: “Ku Ku Nu is a song about putting someone on a pedestal and dreaming about all the things you could be for them… After years of touring with Happy Mondays, me and Frank wanted to write a song as a homage to the Madchester/shoe gazer sound of the early ’90s, I think we did a decent job! I remember listening to endless Northern Soul and Motown tunes on The Happy Mondays tour bus around America and watching Wattstax soundtrack on repeat, I guess it was second nature recording a song like Ku Ku Nu years later.”

My Baby – Make A Hundred
My Baby is a Dutch band, but they’re playing so many gigs outside their own country, that you probably know them already. If not: go and check them as soon as you can. Preferably live, because they’re ace! From the first note on, they put the pedal to the metal and only after the last note they hit the brakes. And in between? 100% pure groove!
My Baby mixes roots, funk, gospel and blues into what they call ‘voodoo trance’. That, combined with the hippie-like appearance of singer Cato van Dijck, especially, produces a Woodstock kind of feeling (as far as I know it by tradition, that is).
If you don’t know them yet, make sure you listen to the track Make A Hundred off their album Prehistoric Rhythm. I’m pretty sure that My Baby will soon be everybody’s favourite!

Aeroplane (feat. Tawatha Agee) – Love On Hold
Vito de Luca is a Belgian nu-disco producer, working under the Aeroplane moniker. Superstar and We Can’t Fly are just two great examples of his music, that works equally well on the dance floor and on the radio.
And guess what? Aeroplane is back. This time he even dove deeper to the original roots of his music, by asking Tawatha Agee to sing on his new single. If her name doesn’t ring a bell: she sang backing vocals for people like Luther Vandross and David Bowie in the 80’s, and was a member of Mtume, whose classic Juicy Fruit was famously sampled in The Notorious B.I.G.’s hit Juicy.
And now, her iconic voice is featured in Aeroplane’s new bass-heavy funkin’ disco track Love On Hold. The 80’s just rang… they want their sound back! ?

Youth Club – Are You Wanting It All
Two of the members of Youth Club are brothers. They had been writing songs together for years, before they decided to start a band. How appropriate that they first caught my ears with their second EP Brothers. I particularly loved the opening track Breathe, that sounds like a love child of Phoenix and Two Door Cinema Club.
Now, the Southend-based band have a new song out, and I like it just the same!

Seramic (feat. Bootsy Collins) – Greg’s Love
Seramic is a London-based band with Marcus Foster as its frontman. He describes himself as a ‘new alternative hipster gospel artist’. And it’s true, many of their funky, soul-flavoured tracks are supported by gospel-like background vocals.
Greg’s Love is one of them. It is, in fact, a track that was released last year without many media noticing it. Only now, radio stations across Europe start to give it a spin, resulting in the song entering the European Border Breakers Chart. So, it’s not too late…
Foster says about Greg’s Love: “The song began as a bass line sent to me by Greg, my bass player. It was inspired by Bootsy Collins, which is why we’re so honoured he agreed to get involved. It asks its listeners to celebrate; to find something fresh and exciting, like falling in love again, and just let go.”
After opening for Jack Garratt last year, from 29 March on Seramic will support Bear’s Den on their European trek. A headline tour can’t be far away…

Texas – Let’s Work It Out
Before Johnny McElhone formed Texas with singer Sharleen Spiteri, he had enjoyed some success with his bands Altered Images and Hipsway. But Texas really hit the bull’s eye and scored hits like I Don’t Want A Lover, Say What You Want (I personally prefer this original to the remixed version featuring Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man and RZA), Summer Son and Inner Smile.
On 21 April, Texas put out their ninth album Jump On Board. First single Let’s Work It Out, with its funky, Rock Your Baby-like guitar lick is already available. The video stars ‘retired’ (the guy is 39!) professional footballer Thierry Henry driving a car and Sharleen dancing before a green screen, basically. What more do you need? 😉
