Wildcard (week 19):
Nu Genea – TienatĂ©
Nu Genea is the artistic project of Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina. Itâs got a few ear-catching qualities: the duo combine disco, funk, boogie, electronic, dub, jazz, folk and much more into heavenly grooves, and the lyrics are sung in their Napoli tongue by Fabiana Martone. New single TienatĂ© bears all of these hallmarks.
Martone is a white singer, but she makes the track sound like it was produced in Africa. Obviously, the multi-coloured musical backdrop adds a lot to this notion as well. On this track, Martoneâs powerful voice is crossed with synths, strings, and multiple musical influences from south of the Mediterranean Sea.
Following MarechiĂ , TienatĂ© is the second single to be released ahead of Nu Geneaâs long-awaited third album Bar Mediterraneo, which will be out on 13 May. The track deals with a relationship between alleged friends, in which someone borrows something⊠and then disappears. This groovy, exotic banger is sure to get the summer started.
TienatĂ© by Nu Genea is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. Itâll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week!

Wildcard (week 17):
Donohue – Solo
Thomas OâDonoghue, Donohue for short, is an 18 year old artist. The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist was born in Ireland, but currently lives in Manchester. Solo is only his debut single, but a very confident one. For someone his age, itâs a mature mix of funk, R&B and bravado.
The trackâs title couldnât be more appropriate. Donohue wrote the song, played all the instruments and produced it himself. His vocal style sits somewhere between rapping and singing, while the speedy bass licks and the gritty guitar solo are all his as well. Influences appear to range from Prince to Bruno Mars. Could this become 2022âs Uptown Funk?
Anyway, Solo by Donohue is this weekâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. Itâll feature prominently at the to of this blog for a full seven days.

Dopapod – Black Holes
Dopapod. Is that a bird? Is it a plane? Is it even a word? Not really. Itâs a band. And Dopapod is a palindrome, which means you read the same forward as backward. Since 2009, they released six albums: Radar, Drawn Onward, Redivider, Never Odd Or Even, Megagem and Emit Time. A self-titled seventh record will be out on 27 May. Now watch all of those titles closely. Does something strike you? Theyâre all palindromes as well!
The band states that symmetry and balance are integral parts of the way they work. A difficult task, for theyâve got a wide range of inspirations. In Podapodâs music, youâll hear rock, disco, funk, jazz, bluegrass, electronica and much more. And listening to the way they combine all of that into a melting pot of their own, one canât help but thinking these guys like mathemetics as well. This is complex music, but injected with a fair dose of humour.
It wonât surprise you Dopapod was formed at Berklee College Of Music, by Eli Winderman (keyboards, vocals), Rob Compa (guitar, vocals), Neal âFroâ Evans (drums) and Chuck Jones (bass). Since the start in 2007, the band played hundreds of shows (per year!), building a loyal fanbase.
New single Black Holes is sure to please their followers. Itâs as groovy as ever, with a fat beat thatâll make even the stiffest of us dance. If not, please check your pulse!
