Saint Motel – Preach
Saint Motel came on my radar via their single My Type. The year after, 2015, they released the equally great track Cold Cold Man, and I’ve been a massive fan ever since. Currently, the band are recording their album The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, which will be the sum of 3 EP’s. The first, The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Pt. 1, came out last year. The second set of 5 songs, a.k.a. The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack: Pt. 2, will follow later this year.
Two of these songs are out there now. A Good Song Never Dies came out last March, and you can now put your hands together for Preach. It holds all of the elements I love Saint Motel for: it’s funky, danceable and utterly catchy. If there were a prize for ‘Best bass line’, this would be a contender. Add a ton of synths and horns, and a potential summer hit should be in the pocket!

Wildcard (week 28):
Grace Farriss – All The People
Grace Farriss has lived on an artistic and musical diet all of her life. She grew up in the UK and Australia, as the daughter of Andrew Farriss, the main composer/songwriter for INXS. Growing up, she was always encouraged to play the piano and guitar. Eventually, she became a poet, singer, songwriter, composer, producer, painter, artist, author and environmentalist.
In 2017, she wrote All The People, which celebrates the interconnection between the diverse cultures that shape the world. The song has just been released as her debut single. It’s a ‘70s-inspired funky disco track, driven by a tight drum, horn and bass groove. Think of it as a more organic version of Lola’s Theme by The Shapeshifters. And the guitar that drops in after 1 minute reminds me of the opening riff of Sausolito Summernight by Diesel. What a great way to start a career!
Farriss is set to release her debut album Grace later this year, featuring performances from some of the world’s greatest musicians. The ‘thank you’ section in the booklet will include The Section Quartet, Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley) on drums, Joey Waronker (Beck) on drums, Abe Rounds (Andrew Bird, Meshell Ndegeocello) on drums, Benji Lysaght (Adele, Father John Misty) on guitar, Ralph Carney (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, The B-52’s) on saxophone, John Kirby (Solange) on keys, and Todd M. Simon (Angel City All-Star Brass Band) on horns.
Grace Farriss’ very first single All The People is this week’s new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

First Beige – Not Gonna Feel The Way You Asked For
When I think about music from Australia, jazz is not the first genre that springs to mind. My bad, and First Beige proves me wrong.
Since starting in 2016 as the bedroom-recording project of founding member David Versace, the band has come a long way. In 2020, First Beige is a six-piece. They draw upon jazzy colours, funky bass lines, textural synth layers and interwoven vocal harmonies, backed by driving house rhythms. An infectious live act, their high energy set is full of extended improvised sections. It’s groovy, baby!
The band’s new single Not Gonna Feel The Way You Asked For started as an improvisational jam session as well. Versace explains: “I set up a drum loop and had Marley (bass) and Josh (keys) jam over it. A couple of months later I found the session on my computer and started mucking around with it and structuring it a bit and in no time had a rough demo of the song,” he said. “We had our friend Curtis come and track some trumpet one afternoon and also my housemate Kerry from Pink Matter sing on it. I took it to the band and recorded some final drum/percussion parts then handed it over to Oscar for the mixing and sent it off for mastering…”

Friday – Hey Mama
Friday are a talented new band from the Netherlands, consisting of Koen Brouwer and Quintin Huigen. They first met at the conservatory of Amsterdam in 2010. In the years that followed, both played in the bands of their friends while working hard at their day-jobs. Now, after years of relentless 9-5, the two are ready to break the treadmill, and live their dreams. Early this year, they eventually formed their own band Friday.
The duo’s first single 21 was met with critical acclaim and playlisted by several nation-wide radio stations. I’m certain this follow-up will do even better. Hey Mama is as funky as it’s catchy, not in the least thanks to the ‘Hey, hey, hey’ part, that sounds a little like Alice Cooper’s Hey Stoopid.
Friday are set to release their debut EP later this year. It’s produced by Cenzo Townshend, the legendary sound engineer who worked with U2, Snow Patrol, Kings Of Leon and many others before.

Mads Langer – Life In Stereo
Danish singer-songwriter Mads Langer broke through internationally in 2010, with his acoustic cover of Olive’s 1997 banger You’re Not Alone. Although he had several bigger hits in his home country since then, his success abroad quickly stalled. And that’s a pity, for Langer is a very talented composer and multi-instrumentalist.
Take his new single for instance. He wrote, produced, sang and played all instruments on it himself. Life In Stereo is a great tune that deserves a spot on radio and Spotify playlists alike. It’s both soulful and funky, in a Stevie Wonder kind of way.
Meanwhile, Langer is creative on another level as well. The last months he managed to continue performing live by staging several very successful drive-in concerts.

Me & My Toothbrush – Funking Around
Me & My Toothbrush is the artist name of Christian Beat Hirt. Not sure if that’s his real name, but he’s a nu-disco maestro from Zurich, Switzerland. If funky house and disco music is your thing, you’d better check him out.
The aptly titled Funking Around is his latest single. Already a huge hit on the Beatport platform, it’s great if you like to dance without being distracted by ‘deep’ lyrics. A groovy ditty, enhanced by horn stabs, drum rolls and cowbells. Now get your lazy ass on the dance floor!
