Wernerâs Weekly (week 2)
2018 wasnât exactly off to a slow start for new music. My container playlist Carte Blanche Music, which I will update daily with the best tracks of the year in the next 12 months, already contains 21 songs; over 70 minutes of ear catching music. Well-known artists like Simple Minds, Black Rebel Motor Cycle Club, Joan As Police Woman and The Vaccines are there, but you can also discover acts like Kumisolo, Banfi and Freak.
This year, Iâll continue to start the working week with a recap of the best tracks that surfaced in the past week. If you donât have time to visit this blog each day, Wernerâs Weekly is your compass to the music that matters. It features the latest two Carte Blanche Music Wildcards, followed by an alphabetical list of other highlights. Through the links you can read my original recommendations and you can listen to all the tracks via the Wernerâs Weekly player in the sidebar. Happy discovery!

Wildcard (week 1):
Saveus – Time Can Heal A Man
In 2008, then only 15-year-old Martin Hoberg Hedegaard won the first Danish series of âThe X Factorâ. Last year, his single Levitate Me, released under the Saveus moniker, was a Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. But chances are, that his global breakthrough will coincide with the tenth anniversary of his victory at the television talent show.
âSaveusâ may be pronounced as âSave Usâ, not as a Roman emperor, but his new single Time Can Heal A Man is another majestic soul pop track with a massive gospel backing. Irresistible, evidenced by the fact this song is the first Carte Blanche Music Wildcard of 2018!

Wernerâs Weekly (week 38)
Last week was a great week for new music. Only in the past seven days I added great new songs by David Gray, Foo Fighters, Honeyblood and Shout Out Louds to my 2017 container playlist Carte Blanche Music. Even Skipper Wise, who scored his last (and only) hit Standing Outside In The Rain in 1990, is back with a beautiful new track.
As every Monday morning, you can find my favourites of this whole bunch â in alphabetical order – in Wernerâs Weekly, below. The tags underneath this post indicate the variety you will experience while playing these songs. You can do this through the Wernerâs Weekly player in the sidebar. JohnnySwim – First Try
JohnnySwim is the stage name of singer-songwriter duo Amanda Sudano and Abner Ramirez, who married in the process. When you listen to their songs, youâll soon enough discover Sudano is more than Donna Summerâs daughter alone (at many of her motherâs concerts she sang backing vocals).
First Try is JohnnySwimâs latest single. The song has been buzzing around for almost a year now. In October 2016 it was one of the tracks on their second album Georgica Pond and it stood out immediately. Itâs a gospel-like song, full of soul, which features a piece of humming that is equal parts Let It Be and Lean On Me.
The track has been on my Carte Blanche Music playlist since last May, but has only now been remixed for its release as a single, accompanied by a video that features footage from the duoâs recent tour.

Wernerâs Weekly (week 35)
Besides many upcoming acts that are worth checking, I added new tracks by Beck, Feeder, Neil Finn, Lissie, Nicole Atkins, The War On Drugs and many others to my 2017 container playlist Carte Blanche Music last week. If you are a musical omnivore, like me, thatâs a playlist worth following, if I may say so myself.
If the six best songs of the past week are enough for you, look no further. I selected them for you and present them here, in alphabetical order.

Olsson – No Sugar
Last year, Christian Olsson debuted with his great single Hold On, featuring fellow Swede Mapei. Also the follow-up singles One In A Million and Ăa Mâest Ăgal are on his first album Millions, that came out last spring.
And now, Olsson comes up with single #4. All-new music, not to found on his album. Apparently, he has moved on already. No Sugar is an irresistible song, based on a Madchester kind of beat with some gospel thrown into the mix. Love it!

Hannah Grace – Praise You
In 1999, Fatboy Slimâs Praise You, which was more than loosely based upon Camille Yarbroughâs Take Yoâ Praise, was a big hit. 17 years later, the song gets another stunning rework.
Hannah Grace, from South-Wales, turns 24 today (happy birthday Hannah!). She recently graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where she studied jazz vocals. As a singer-songwriter, she incorporates elements from jazz, blues, folk, soul, rock and pop in her music. A bit like Hozier, whom she already supported on tour.
After her EPâs Meant To Be Kind and Mustang, she has now sunk her teeth in Praise You. The London Contemporary Voices Choir â who previously worked with artists such as Sam Smith, Imogen Heap and Alt J. – lend their vocals to the track as well. And still, itâs more pop than gospel. Hear for yourself!

Welshly Arms – Legendary
Welshly Arms are not from Wales. Nope. This four-piece, named after a sketch in Saturday Night Live, are from Cleveland, Ohio. They blend genres like blues, gospel, rhythm & blues and rock and mention Jimi Hendrix, The Temptations, Otis Redding and Howlin’ Wolf as their influences.
For those who find it hard to imagine how that sounds, just take Hozier in mind. If you like his music, you should definitely check out Welshly Arms. I bet youâll like it!
