After a week full of great releases (by Fickle Friends, Blackfield, MaxĂŻmo Park and others), that you can find in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music, itâs time to draw up the balance-sheet: what were the best new tracks of the past week? Seramic (feat. Bootsy Collins) – Gregâs Love
Seramic is a London-based band with Marcus Foster as its frontman. He describes himself as a ânew alternative hipster gospel artistâ. And itâs true, many of their funky, soul-flavoured tracks are supported by gospel-like background vocals.
Gregâs Love is one of them. It is, in fact, a track that was released last year without many media noticing it. Only now, radio stations across Europe start to give it a spin, resulting in the song entering the European Border Breakers Chart. So, itâs not too lateâŠ
Foster says about Gregâs Love: âThe song began as a bass line sent to me by Greg, my bass player. It was inspired by Bootsy Collins, which is why we’re so honoured he agreed to get involved. It asks its listeners to celebrate; to find something fresh and exciting, like falling in love again, and just let go.â
After opening for Jack Garratt last year, from 29 March on Seramic will support Bearâs Den on their European trek. A headline tour canât be far awayâŠ

Youâll find this list by clicking on the image in the sidebar. The absolute highlights from this lot are selected for Wernerâs Weekly, which is refreshed every Monday morning. This list (with no particular order, well, alphabetical order that is) is featured in the sidebar as well. But only one track can be the best of them all. This song is chosen as Wildcard, which will be announced on Wednesdays (Wildcard Wednesday, anyone?) and will feature prominently on top of my blog for one whole week.

Hifi Sean feat. Crystal Waters – Testify
If âdanceable gospel bluesâ is not a genre, Hifi Sean just invented it. Hifi who? Hifi Sean. His real name is Sean Dickson and you may or may not know him as the frontman of The Soup Dragons (whose Rolling Stones cover Iâm Free is still a classic in my book). With The High Fidelity he released the even more enjoyable Scream If You Want To Go Faster, co-produced by Arthur Baker.
And now Hifi Sean is back with yet another banger: Testify, that vaguely resembles Fatboy Slimâs Praise You. The singer on the track is Crystal Waters, who scored 90âs hits in her own right, such as Gypsy Woman (Sheâs Homeless) and 100% Pure Love.
Testify is one of the tracks on Hifi Seanâs new solo album Ft.. This is short for âfeaturingâ, since the album contains collaborations with Yoko Ono, Bootsy Collins, Fred Schneider (The B-52âs), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) and many more.

Carte Blanche Top 2016
Is there a better way to introduce myself and this new music blog than via a year-end chart? Last year in my Carte Blanche radio show I played over 800 new tracks, all of which you can find in this 2016 container playlist (subject to availability). Only 100 of them made it to the Carte Blanche Top 2016.
Some random statistics:
- After the usual suspects â Great-Britain (34) and United States (19) â the Netherlands deliver most entries (9), followed by Sweden (8), Belgium (6), Australia (5), Norway and France (4 each)
- 42% of all lead vocals are sung by women, which is unique compared to other radio stations
- There are more rock tracks in (the upper regions of) the Carte Blanche Top 2016 than in your average year-end chart
- The same goes for acts that were already successful 10, 20, even 30 years ago, proving they are still relevant today

Wernerâs Weekly (week 49)
Wie zoet is, krijgt lekkers⊠Omdat ik het volste vertrouwen heb in jouw gedrag, heb ik weer wat strooigoed voor je toegevoegd aan mijn Spotify-lijst Werner Tipt. Verheug je maar alvast op Nederlandse artiesten als Moss, Jett Rebel, Lucas Hamming en Rob Klerkx & The Secret, of Fenech-Soler, Circa Waves en Bastille. Vijf van die tracks zijn zo lekker, dat ze de erelijst Wernerâs Weekly hebben gehaald. Die vijf bespreek ik hieronder.
Backseat van The Brahms stond ook al tussen de allerbeste tracks van vorige week, maar promoveert deze week tot Carte Blanche Remschijf. Een heerlijk energiek radioliedje als tegenwicht voor al het zijige gedreutel wat weer op ons afkomt.
Maar er is meer lekkers uit ons eigen land afkomstig en het uiterste noorden lijkt momenteel even hofleverancier. De Groningse electroband Lghtnng bijvoorbeeld, heeft van hun tweede EP Getting Ready het nummer Hold On To Let Go op single uitgebracht. Heerlijke onderkoelde syntipop.
En uit Leeuwarden komt Mundo Park. Zij zijn al sinds 2010 actief en staan op het punt hun debuutalbum op de wereld los te laten. Keep Your Faith In Me is daarvan een erg prettig voorproefje. Voorzien van een toffe 360-gradenclip.
De muziek van de Franse singer-songwriter Lescop (echte naam: Mathieu Peudupin) vind ik intrigerend. Van zijn tweede album Echo ontdekte ik deze week in eerste instantie de single Dérangé, maar inmiddels is net de opvolger uit: David Palmer. Zwoele new wave, het bestaat!
Geniet tot slot van Hifi Sean feat. Crystal Waters – Testify. Hifi Sean is Sean Dickson, ex-voorman van The Soup Dragons (Iâm Free) en van The High Fidelity (Scream If You Want To Go Faster). Crystal Waters had beginjaren ’90 hits met Gypsy Woman en 100% Pure Love. Dansbare gospelblues, vaagjes vergelijkbaar met Praise You van Fatboy Slim.
Je vindt alle vijf deze nummers in mijn Spotify-playlist Wernerâs Weekly en binnen een kwartier ben je weer volledig op de hoogte. Wernerâs Weekly (week 45)
Afgelopen week heb ik 22 tracks toegevoegd aan mijn longlist met beste liedjes van 2016: Werner Tipt. Nog vrij onbekende artiesten als Uncle Frank, Brufield, Betsy, Lucius en Maggie Rogers zijn absoluut het ontdekken waard, en ook Olly Murs, Lady Gaga feat. Florence Welch en Sigma feat. Birdy hebben toffe nieuwe tracks uit. En dat zijn nog niet eens de echte highlights van deze week, want die staan natuurlijk (in volstrekt willekeurige volgorde) in Wernerâs Weekly!
De Carte Blanche Remschijf is komende week voor The Griswolds feat. Lisso. YDLM (wat staat voor âyou donât love meâ) is de derde vrijgegeven teaser track van hun cd High Time For Low Lives, die deze week uitkomt, en doet een beetje denken aan Uptown Funk. Single of niet, het is een topnummer!
Lossy komt, net als The Griswolds (en nog zoveel andere goede acts momenteel), uit AustraliĂ«. You Whoâs Guiding Me is pas haar tweede single en voer voor fans van Kate Nash en Lily Allen (evenals Caterpillar Shoes van Heidi Maree overigens, die vorige week nog Remschijf was).
Als het niet als een flauwe woordspeling had geklonken, had ik gezegd dat ik de nieuwe single van Stevie Wonder niet had zien aankomen. Het is een duet met Ariana Grande, die zelf ook vol ongeloof over de samenwerking twitterde. Zij brengen de gospelboogie binnenkort terug in de charts met Faith, uit de aankomende animatiefilm Sing.
Nimmo is een Londens vijftal rond de jeugdvriendinnen Sarah Nimmo en Reva Gauntlett. Ze noemden zich tot twee jaar geleden nog Nimmo & The Gauntletts. Dancing Makes Us Brave is een ogenschijnlijk simpel popliedje, dat na meerdere luisterbeurten steeds meer lagen prijsgeeft.
Een van de bijzonderste bands van de afgelopen jaren is voor mij Public Service Broadcasting, dat fragmenten uit documentaires en propagandafilms op muziek zet. Begin december verschijnt een registratie van hun concert in de O2 Academy Brixton, met een koor, strijkers en blazers, op cd en dvd. Gagarin is een geweldig voorproefje.
Estrons (wat Welsh is voor âaliensâ) is een rockband uit Cardiff, waarvan de zangeres van Canadees/Zweedse komaf is. Hun carriĂšre zit in de lift sinds ze overstapten van Welsh op Engels. Iâm Not Your Girl is, na Make A Man en Drop, hun derde topsingle op rij.
De Belgische zanger Niels Delvaux bedient zich van de artiestennaam Delv!s. Come My Way is zijn debuutsingle. Hij neemt een vleugje Justin Timberlake, een snuifje Maroon 5 en een likje Jamiroquai, en smaakt daarmee als een soort Belgische Bruno Mars. Groovy!
Ook Art Felixx staat niet onder die naam ingeschreven bij de burgerlijke stand. Het is het muzikale alter ego van Arthur Wils, die eerder voorman was van de Nederlandse band Monks Avenue. High On Love is een heerlijke kennismaking met Art Felixx.
