Werner’s Weekly (week 25)
Monday, re-run day. Each Monday morning I look back upon the past week to see what new songs were the absolute best. In the last seven days I added George Ezra, Macklemore, The Killers, Oh Wonder and many more to my Carte Blanche Music container playlist. Every single one of them great tracks, but when compiling Werner’s Weekly I’m very strict.
These are the happy few (click on the links for more info and listen through the dedicated Werner’s Weekly player in the sidebar):
- Nana Adjoa – The Resolution (this week’s Wildcard)
- Triggerfinger – Flesh Tight (last week’s Wildcard)
- Fabri Fibra feat. Thegiornalisti – Pamplona
- Kadebostany – Mind If I Stay
- Valparaiso (feat. Phoebe Killdeer & Howe Gelb) – Rising Tides

Wildcard (week 24):
Nana Adjoa – The Resolution
Meet Nana Adjoa (real last name: Effah-Bekoe). She’s a talented Dutch singer-songwriter, who used to play bass and guitar and provide backing vocals in a plethora of bands, like A Polaroid View, Sue The Night and most recently with Janne Schra. Now, she’s working on a solo career.
The last few years Adjoa has been working on the songs that are about to be released on her debut EP Down At The Root. The first track off it is the beautiful single The Resolution, which she wrote and produced herself.
The Resolution by Nana Adjoa is this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Alvvays – In Undertow
Funny how certain words, that are not often used in everyday language, can suddenly pop up like weeds. In recent months, ‘undertow’ is such a word. Pet Shop Boys released a single with that title, as did the bands CUT_ and Panama. One of the stand-out tracks on Dan Auerbach’s latest album is named Undertow as well, and now Alvvays comes up with their single In Undertow…
Almost three years ago, the Canadian indie-pop darlings released their self-titled debut album and now they’re back with new music. We’ll have to wait ‘till 8 September before their new album Antisocialites drops, but until then, we can enjoy the first single.
In Undertow is a break-up song. “You made a mistake you’d like to erase,” Molly Rankin sings in a shoegaze kind of way, “and I understand.” But with determination she adds: “There’s no turning back after what’s been said.”

The Shins – Half A Million
The Shins’s first release dates back to 1998. It landed them a record deal with legendary label Sub Pop. Over the years, the American band has released indie pop gems like New Slang, So Says I, Saint Simon, Fighting In A Sack, and many more.
Half A Million, off their most recent album Heartworms, will be their next single.

Bad Sounds – Zacharia
Why didn’t British five-piece Bad Sounds name their band Dirty Sounds? Probably because they’re from Bath. I wrote about them earlier, concerning the great single Wages. Other tracks they released to far are I Feel, Avalanche and Meat On My Bones.
All four of them are now collected on their debut EP Phresssh, which also features one new lead track: Zacharia.

Plgrms – Dream You Up
Plgrms is a Sydney-based duo comprised of singer-songwriter Jacob Pearson and songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Bowden. They make an infectious, dreamy kind of indie pop.
So far, they have come up with only four singles: after Pieces, Fools And Their Gold and Gemini, Plgrms just released Dream You Up.

Frills – My Love
Frills is a new band, operating from Brooklyn, New York, but consisting of New-Zealand exports Simon Oscroft and Dan Gibson. After producing various projects, including The Aces, they decided to start their own band. Frills debut with the single My Love, which is both danceable and relaxed; it has a baggy, Madchester-like feel to it. Think Happy Mondays, for example.
More music is planned for the summer. I’m looking forward to it!

TANA – Why Can’t I Love You (Live)
If you like TANA’s song Leave Away like I do, it’s good to know the Ukrainian band (whose name is short for ‘The Active New Atmospheric music band’) has a complete EP out now. The EP Broken features six electronic pop tracks, covering subgenres like future bass, electronic chill-out and downtempo. It includes the singles Broken and Leave Away. If you love acts like Disclosure and Flume, this is certainly worth checking out.
You can find all EP tracks on TANA’s YouTube channel. Like they did for Leave Away, the band also released a live video for the track Why Can’t I Love You. Further proof that the band can also pull it off on stage.
Talking of which: TANA will present the tracks of its first EP on 2 June during a concert in Átlas, one of the most popular music venues in Kiev. The concert is announced on billboards (pictured) throughout the city, proudly labelled with the logo of media partner Carte Blanche Music 😉 .

Bad Nerves – Dreaming
I told you before about my fascination with songs of under two minutes. This is another one…
Bad Nerves is an upcoming indie garage punk rock quartet from London (not to be confused with The Bad Nerves from Canada, who operate in the same field). They (the British ones) released Wasted Days and Can’t Be Mine via SoundCloud and Dreaming is their first track to appear on other streaming services. It even has a video:

Juniore – Le Jour D’après
Juniore is a psychedelic indie synth pop band, that was formed by three girls in Paris in 2013. Their early singles are collected on the album Juniore, and this year they released their debut album Ouh Là Là. It is released on a label that singer Anna Jean founded with Samy Osta, who also produced albums by two other great contemporary French bands, La Femme and Feu! Chatterton.
Ouh Là Là is an album full of nostalgia, not only because of the use of elements like French retro pop and a surf guitar, but also because of Anna Jean’s Françoise Hardy-esque, vague way of singing.
All of these ingredients are present in this beautiful album track, Le Jour D’après.
