Wildcard (week 19):
Nu Genea – TienatĂ©
Nu Genea is the artistic project of Massimo Di Lena and Lucio Aquilina. Itâs got a few ear-catching qualities: the duo combine disco, funk, boogie, electronic, dub, jazz, folk and much more into heavenly grooves, and the lyrics are sung in their Napoli tongue by Fabiana Martone. New single TienatĂ© bears all of these hallmarks.
Martone is a white singer, but she makes the track sound like it was produced in Africa. Obviously, the multi-coloured musical backdrop adds a lot to this notion as well. On this track, Martoneâs powerful voice is crossed with synths, strings, and multiple musical influences from south of the Mediterranean Sea.
Following MarechiĂ , TienatĂ© is the second single to be released ahead of Nu Geneaâs long-awaited third album Bar Mediterraneo, which will be out on 13 May. The track deals with a relationship between alleged friends, in which someone borrows something⊠and then disappears. This groovy, exotic banger is sure to get the summer started.
TienatĂ© by Nu Genea is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. Itâll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week!

Who Parked The Car – Rock Climbing
One of the musical revelations of the end of last year was Who Parked The Car. These eight schooled musicians from Paris only formed their band late in 2020. In merely six monthsâ time, they wrote and recorded their debut album Mad Weather, Good Friends. Set for release in April, itâs a collection of songs that blend pop, jazz and funk music.
Following their energetic, funk/nu-disco debut single Candle Dance and its laid-back, jazzy follow-up Other Side, they just put our their third track. Rock Climbing is another groovy track, with various faces. Basically a jazz tune, it contains parts with a reggaeton kind of vibe. Lyrically, itâs a song about love and addiction.

Sara Schwab – Control
âBlue-eyed soulâ was made famous by artists like The Righteous Brothers, Hall & Oates, The Style Council, Lisa Stansfield, Simply Red, Paul Carrack and Joss Stone. Maybe itâs time to add a contemporary artist to that list. My vote goes to New York singer-songwriter Sara Schwab. Her songs sit somewhere halfway soul and jazz, a sound described in a press release as âmelting butterâ. Mixing humour with sincerity, she loves singing about mental illness, feminism, the subway and whiskey. She typically provides catchy music with striking lyrics to contrast.
Her new single is no exception. Control is an upbeat and soulful song with introspective lyrics to stand out against the fun musicality. Schwab explains: âI wrote this in quarantine after spending days upon days thinking about someone halfway across the world. What were they doing? Were they thinking of me? Were they forgetting my face already? I couldnât stand the hypotheticals so I wrote this song out of pure frustration. And it ended up being one of the most fun and groovy songs Iâve put out there!â

Who Parked The Car – Other Side
Thomas Salvatore (vocals, piano and keyboards), Laura Wamba (vocals), SebastiĂĄn Muñoz (saxophone, flute), FĂ©lix Reneault (saxophone), CĂ©sar Aouillé (guitar), Ludo Prieur (bass), Malo Ropers (percussions) and Alejandro Dixon (drums) are Who Parked The Car. Eight people in one band. Eight people to share the money. Hopefully theyâre good friends and/or make music for fun đ.
One thing is sure: coming from the best music schools in Paris, this is a talented bunch of young musicians. And with pop influences like Bruno Mars, Stevie Wonder, Toto and Supertramp, and jazz influences like Snarky Puppy, Robert Glasper, Louis Cole and Weather Report, what could possibly go wrong?
Following their energetic, funk/nu-disco debut single Candle Dance, Who Parked The Car now show an âother sideâ of themselves. Their new single is a laid-back, jazzy track with soulful lyrics about the different sides of people. A song that fits winter like a glove.
Nevertheless, I canât wait for spring, for more than one reason. Because of the sun and higher temperatures (hopefully), but also because this octet will release their debut album Mad Weather, Good Friends in April. The band say the music on it will be fresh, organic, spontaneous, cheerful, bright, inclusive, optimistic and comforting. Sounds like just the thing we all need. Bring it on!

Dead Anyway – Space Dust
Writing a long article isnât that hard. All youâve got to do is pour out all of your ideas and combine them in one piece. Making your point in a short article however is much more complicated. It forces you to really choose your words carefully and only include your strongest arguments. As far as Iâm concerned, the same goes for songs. Short songs (provided theyâre crafted by great musicians, of course) often cut the deepest.
Enter Dead Anyway. Kate Arnold (lyrics/vocals) and Marc Symonds (beats/instruments) are currently two of Britainâs most prolific artists. If you think: âI betcha, their songs are 2 minutes on averageâ, Iâm afraid you didnât catch my drift. Creating a short track can easily take more time than a long one.
In the case of the duoâs new single Space Dust, the lyrics are as witty and humorous as ever. Musically, they chose a driving jazzy drum beat, piano and percussion for a back drop. This way, once again, Symonds found a highly effective way to highlight Arnolds poetry. In 97 seconds, itâs all over. Thank God for the repeat button. Letâs hope Adele doesnât kill itâŠ
Listening to Space Dust, The Jackal by Ronny Jordan feat. Dana Bryant (1993) came to mind. You might like that one as well. But: listen to Space Dust first!

Who Parked The Car – Candle Dance
Who Parked The Car are eight schooled musicians from Paris, who only formed their band late last year. In only six monthsâ time, they wrote and recorded their debut album Mad Weather, Good Friends. Set for release in Spring 2022, itâs a collection of songs that blends pop, jazz and funk music. A record that sounds like a fiery jam session.
First single Candle Dance is a great example of what to expect. Itâs rich, infectious and groovy, and almost impossible not to dance to. Lyrically, itâs about not giving up. Even when the situation is really bad, things can get better if you stay positive. If you like bands like Brand New Heavies or early Jamiroquai (especially when playing live), this is for you. Talking of which: the music has been composed to be performed live and bring good energies to the audience.
The band consists of Thomas Salvatore (vocals, piano and keyboards), Laura Wamba (vocals), SebastiĂĄn Muñoz (saxophone, flute), FĂ©lix Reneault (saxophone), CĂ©sar AouillĂ© (guitar), Ludo Prieur (bass), Malo Ropers (percussions) and Alejandro Dixon (drums). The only thing we still donât know is: who parked the car?
