Wildcard (week 20):
Haerts – Days Go By
Singer Nini Fabi and multi-instrumentalist Benny Gebert are originally from Munich. They met in high school and became a couple, both romantically and musically. The two have been living in the United States for years now. First in New York, but they recently relocated to California. Originally, their band Haerts was a quartet, but in 2021, Fabi and Gebert are the two remaining core members. However, the band can grow out to a six-piece when playing live.
Dream Nation, out this week, is the outfitâs third album. Once again a collection of gorgeous, ethereal alt-pop music, with clear nods to the â60s and â70s. Take new single Days Go By, for instance. A lovely retro pop song with jazz and soul influences. Itâs got an exotic touch, thanks to tropical drums, a prominent flute and even a lovely house piano. It reminds me of The Brand New Heavies, which is never a bad thing!
Haertsâ new single Days Go By is this weekâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, so itâll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week!

Babe Rainbow – Ready For Tomorrow
The last time I wrote about Babe Rainbow, the Australian band was yet to release their debut album. Four years later, they have more than two hands full of singles and three albums to their name. And the fourth, Changing Colours, comes out this week. The record was once again produced by Wayne Connelly, who previously helmed classic records by The Vines, Neil Finn, and You Am I.
Babe Rainbowâs music has an undeniable link with the past. Their new single Ready For Tomorrow, for instance, combines funky disco with jazzy guitars and a Tame Impala kind of psychedelia. Groovy, baby!
Singer Angus Dowling says about the track: âIt’s about 21st-century life, finding relief from the stress of both the future and the past. It is about Persephone running into her mother Demeter’s comforting arms.â
Iâll just take another beer thenâŠ

Wildcard (week 46):
Keleketla! – International Love Affair
Keleketla! is an expansive collaborative project, initiated by Coldcut. It started as a musical meeting ground between the Ninja Tune cofounders and a cadre of South African musicians. This included the raw, South African-accented jazz styles of Sibusile Xaba, and rapper Yugen Blakrok. From those initial sessions, the project grew bigger and bigger. Other artists that joined the group were the late Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen, esteemed percussionist Thabang Tabane, legendary LA spoken word pioneers The Watts Prophets, West Papuan activist Benny Wenda and many more.
They draw from a multitude of musical styles, most notably jazz, soul and African music, accumulating into world music of the purest kind. Recording sessions took place both in South Africa and London.
International Love Affair is Keleketla!âs new single. A track with a title as multicultural as the project itself. And as you might have expected, it grooves like a mean machine!
This week, International Love Affair is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

I Donât Know How But They Found Me – Razzmatazz
Obviously, itâs important for a band to have good songs. But in order to stand out in a long list (such as a Spotify playlist), itâs equally important to have a good band name. Enter I Donât Know How But They Found Me.
In the beginning, the band was surrounded by mystery, but by now, we know itâs the new project from former Panic! At The Disco bassist Dallon Weekes and ex-Falling In Reverse drummer Ryan Seaman.
16 October, four years after they started, the duo release their debut album Razzmatazz. The glossy, piano-driven title track is their new single. The use of a multitude of instruments provides the song with a rich, at times jazzy sound. It was inspired by classic rock albums such as The Beatlesâ Sgt. Peppersâ Lonely Hearts Club Band and David Bowieâs The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars. Razzmatazz’ lyrics concern Weekesâ disillusionment with Hollywood.
