Caravan Palace – Supersonics
Arnaud Vial, Charles Delaporte and Hugues Payen first met in 2005. They were asked by a movie production company to write music for a porn film set in the 1950s. Not much later, they decided to form Caravan Palace. The band produce, what they call, âelectro swingâ; a style that mixes jazz and electronic music.
30 August, Caravan Palace release their fourth album Chronologic. Earlier this year, it was preceded by the singles Miracle, About You (feat. Charles X), and Plume. New single Supersonics is out now as well. Immediately recognizable, but with added elements that appear to be influenced by the euro house sound of the early â90s.

The Bird & The Bee (feat. Beck) – Hot For Teacher
Inara George is the daughter of Little Featâs Lowell George, and Greg Kurstin produced everyone from Lily Allen, Sia and Adele to Beck, Kendrick Lamar and Foo Fighters. In 2004, Kurstin contributed piano to several tracks on Georgeâs solo debut. It was then they laid the foundation for The Bird & The Bee, a jazz-influenced electro-pop project.
Since their 2006 debut EP Again And Again And Again And Again, they released four full albums. One of them was Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall & John Oates. No need to explain the concept of that album, I presume?
As you could also have guessed from the title, The Bird & The Bee intended to give more acts their re-interpretation treatment. Well, on 2 August, Interpreting The Masters Volume 2: A Tribute To Van Halen will see the light of day. Ahead of it, they already released their versions of Panama and Ainât Talking âbout Love, but I like their new single Hot For Teacher the best. Not in the least because of the teacher, impersonated by Beck. The original version is from Van Halenâs album 1984.

Wildcard (week 29):
Call Me Loop – Self Love
Brixton-based British singer-songwriter Georgia would rather have you call her Loop. Her alias came about from nicknames her mum gave her: Georgie-Lou, then Loopy-Lou, then Loop.
Describing her sound as âsassy, emotive electronic popâ, Iâd like to summarize it with one word: âcoolâ. But âinfectiousâ would do as well. To give you a hint of what to expect, she names Rihanna, Amy Winehouse and Christina Aguilera as some of her influences. But Loop adds an extra touch of freshness to it all.
On her new pop banger Self Love, she proclaims she has a ânew lease of lifeâ after letting go of a toxic relationship. Iâm glad she wrote this tune about it! Self Love by Call Me Loop is this weekâs new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard.

AáčŁa – Good Thing
AáčŁa Bukola Elemide was born in Paris to Nigerian parents. They returned to live in Nigeria when she was two, but 20 years later, Asa returned to Paris, where her musical career took off. Her artist name AáčŁa (pronounced as âAsjaâ) means âhawkâ in the Yoruba language.
Last May, she broke a five-year silence with her single The Beginning. With the quick follow-up Good Thing, which is equal parts soul and jazz, she keeps the vibe going. Letâs hope a new album (her fourth) is not far awayâŠ

Narda – Love Me Long
Between 2005 and 2013, Dutch brother and sister Radboud en Narda Miedema were writing, recording and performing their own songs in their band Somesay. After releasing the album One Of A Kind and follow-up EP In Bloom, Radboud decided to step out of the limelight to fully focus on song-writing, and successfully so: he (co)wrote Reality by Lost Frequencies & Janieck Devy among many other hits, and started his own music publishing company Roseville. Meanwhile, Narda continued to play live, now as a solo artist, in small bars, restaurants and concert halls, with her loyal companions: a piano and a guitar.
But now, the two are working together again. Narda just released her debut single. A delicate jazzy song, which she wrote herself and was produced by Radboud, who also played upright bass on the track. Itâs called Love Me Long, although the plea is less than 2 minutes short.

The Brand New Heavies feat. NâDea Davenport – Getaway
In the late â80s, early â90s of the last century, Acid Jazz wasnât only an acclaimed record label, its name was also a used to describe the musical genre that was the common denominator of most bands on the label. Signees like Young Disciples, Jamiroquai and The Brand New Heavies all produced music labelled as acid jazz (also known as jazz dance), combining jazz, soul, funk and disco.
In the 1990s, The Brand New Heavies scored hits like Dream On Dreamer, Midnight At The Oasis and Youâve Got A Friend, most of them sung by N’Dea Davenport. While still a popular live act in later years, real hits appeared to be a thing of the past.
Hopefully, a turn of events is on its way, for The Brand New Heavies are back, and theyâre also back on Acid Jazz Records. Recently lauded by the likes of Mark Ronson (who invited the band to play at his fortieth birthday celebrations), they have a brand-new (pun intended) single out, once again featuring long-time vocalist NâDea Davenport. On top of that, it includes a wink at The Emotionsâ Best Of My Love.
Getaway is a most welcome return, which spells the beginning of the next chapter, with a new album underway!
