If you are a musical omnivore, like me, thatās a playlist worth following, if I may say so myself.
If the six best songs of the past week are enough for you, look no further. I selected them for you and present them here, in alphabetical order.
Click the links for a little bit of background and meanwhile, listen to all six of them through the Wernerās Weekly player in the sidebarā¦

Wildcard (week 34):
Julian Velard – Donāt Ask Me About Hamilton (Anymore)
Iāll be the last to suggest that my man Julian Velard listened to my recommendation, but let me just say Iām very glad my favourite track off his latest album Fancy Words For Failure is now officially his new single. What more can I do than repeat the opening lyric of this great track: āMy master piece got released today.ā
Now, if youāll excuse me, Iāll have to put this one on and on over and over again. Sheer happiness and an obvious choice for the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard! This means the song is featured prominently at the top of this blog for a whole week, making it easily accessible so that you, too, can play it over and over again the coming days. Itāll cost you nothing but a mouse click. Enjoy!

Mina – All Night
Mina Mazzini, now 77 years of age, is one of the greatest Italian singers of all times. An icon for Italians (not only because of her three-octave vocal range, but also because of her image of an independent woman), who performed in a large number of television variety shows. 79 of her albums and 71 of her singles reached the Italian charts, and she also scored many hits abroad. In Europe, but also in the US. One of her best-known songs is her duet Parole Parole with Alberto Lupo (1972), which became a worldwide hit in the version of Dalida & Alain Delon (1974).
Around that time, Mina stopped performing in public, but she continued to make a record per year(!).
In 1960 and 1961, she performed at the Sanremo festival. 56(!) years later, she returns there with her version of Parov Stellarās All Night (2012). A danceable, jazzy affair!

Jorja Smith – Teenage Fantasy
Jorja Smith is a young British neo soul singer, who turned 20 last month. She released her debut EP Project 11 only at the end of 2016. Earlier this year, she released the single Beautiful Little Fools on International Womenās Day and she also featured on two tracks on Drakeās More Life playlist.
According to a press release Smith wrote her new single four years ago. The intro features humming she recorded while babysitting when she was 16 years old. Teenage Fantasy is a laid back track, jazzy and soulful at the same time. Bonus points for keeping the blooper at the end as a part of the songā¦

Julian Velard – Donāt Ask Me About Hamilton (Anymore) / Goodbye Hollywood, Hello Adulthood
For years now, Julian Velard has been working hard on his career. And successfully, although his profile is particularly high in the United States. So, it seems like he thought: āperhaps recording an album about failure will be my ticket to stardomā. Chances are, that was some really good thinkingā¦
On Fancy Words For Failure, Velard gets more up close and personal than ever before. Probably because there were quite some changes in his personal life, recently. He married and became a father. No failures there, then. Musically the album is flawless as well, positioning itself somewhere halfway Billy Joel and Harry Connick Jr.
The record features The Night Ed Sheeran Slept On My Couch (released in 2015 already) and his recent single Sweatpants On The Living Room Floor. But the album opener Donāt Ask Me About Hamilton (Anymore) is my favourite.
This track is referenced in that other favourite of mine: Goodbye Hollywood, Hello Adulthood. Perhaps the most prophetical title of them allā¦

Wernerās Weekly (week 25)
Monday, re-run day. Each Monday morning I look back upon the past week to see what new songs were the absolute best. In the last seven days I added George Ezra, Macklemore, The Killers, Oh Wonder and many more to my Carte Blanche Music container playlist. Every single one of them great tracks, but when compiling Wernerās Weekly Iām very strict.
These are the happy few (click on the links for more info and listen through the dedicated Wernerās Weekly player in the sidebar):
- Nana Adjoa – The Resolution (this weekās Wildcard)
- Triggerfinger – Flesh Tight (last weekās Wildcard)
- Fabri Fibra feat. Thegiornalisti – Pamplona
- Kadebostany – Mind If I Stay
- Valparaiso (feat. Phoebe Killdeer & Howe Gelb) – Rising Tides

Fabri Fibra feat. Thegiornalisti – Pamplona
Italian rapper Fabri Fibra, who goes by the real name of Fabrizio Tarducci, fronted several rap crews before releasing his solo debut album Turbe Giovanili in 2002.
Earlier this year his ninth studio album Fenomeno saw the light. Thanks toĀ prominent use of the trombone, the new single Pamplona, on which he collaborates with Italian pop/rock band Thegiornalisti, has a jazzy feel. Not much unlike one of the best songs of 2015: Closer by Lemaitre feat. Jennie A.
A potential summer anthem, as far as Iām concernedā¦

Rex Orange County – Sunflower
18-year-old Surrey teen Alex OāConnor, a.k.a. Rex Orange County, started out as a drummer, but over time he also learned to play keys and guitar. Add to this his sugar-coated voice and you have a one-man band.
He makes the kind of sophisticated, soul and jazz infused pop, that The Style Council produced in the 80ās and The Cardigans in the 90ās. As its title gives away, Sunflower is the perfect tune for the sunny days that lie ahead of us, meteorologically speaking.

Mr. Jukes feat. BJ The Chicago Kid – Angels/Your Love
With Bombay Bicycle Club on hiatus, guitarist and lead singer Jack Steadman decided it was time for a solo project under the name Mr. Jukes. It celebrates his love for jazz, soul and funk, as youāll hear on his album God First, that is set to be released on 9 June. The album will be full of soon-to-be-announced guest musicians.
One collaborator is evident already. Itās American singer-songwriter Bryan James Sledge, better known as BJ The Chicago Kid (or simply BJ). He sings on Mr. Jukesā first single Angels/Your Love, a track built around a sample from Argentinian jazz icon Jorge Lopez Ruiz.
