Wernerâs Weekly (week 9)
Last week, my container playlist Carte Blanche Music, with the best new music of 2017 so far, has been updated with tracks by The Amazons, Maggie Rogers, Nina June, Spoon and many others. But believe it or not, none of those great songs made my final selection of the very, very best tracks of the past seven days: Wernerâs Weekly.
The ones that did make the cut, are listed below (in alphabetical order). Click on the links to read what I wrote about them when they first featured on this blog and if you want to listen to all six songs while reading about them, simply start the Wernerâs Weekly Spotify player in the sidebar. Youâll be done in 20 minutes.
- MisterWives – Machine (this weekâs Wildcard)
- Fishbach – Y Crois-Tu? (last weekâs Wildcard)
- Canât Swim – We Wonât Sleep
- Loyle Carner – Ainât Nothing Changed
- Regina Spektor – Older And Taller
- TANA – Leave Away
Obviously, the above titles are a selection of a selection, since Iâm not able to write about all the tracks that I add to my container playlist. If you want to hear them all, or if you want to make your own selection, click on the image in the sidebar, which will open the complete Carte Blanche Music playlist on Spotify.

Loyle Carner – Ainât Nothing Changed
In real life Loyle Carner is Benjamin Coyle-Larner. A 21-year old London rapper who was nominated for the BBC Sound Of 2016. One of the things I find refreshing about him, is that he is one of only a few rappers who dare to show their softer side.
When Benjamin lost his stepfather in 2014, he decided to quit drama school and fully concentrate on his music career. A year later already he played the Glastonbury festival.
His first single that drew my attention at the end of 2015 was the jazzy track Ainât Nothing Changed. I loved it! After that came No CD and The Isle Of Arran (among others) and his first album Yesterdayâs Gone. He is currently touring Europe in support of it.
In other great news: Ainât Nothing Changed is set for re-release in the UK around mid-April. Hopefully the rest of Europe will follow. Iâm sure it will become a huge hit this time around. Hear why over here:

Wernerâs Weekly (week 8)
So here they are: my ultimate new music recommendations, collected in Wernerâs Weekly. If you havenât heard them already, you can listen to each and every one of them via the dedicated Spotify player in the sidebar. In the list below, where you can find out more about the tracks by clicking the respective links, you may notice Dark Side by Mist. I featured that one a few weeks ago already, but it only appeared on Spotify last week. Hence the mention in this weekâs alphabetically ordered âGallery of the Greatsâ, alongsideâŚ
- Fishbach – Y Crois-Tu? (this weekâs Wildcard)
- Van Echelpoel – Ziet Em Duun (last weekâs Wildcard)
- Cris Cab feat. J. Balvin – Turn Out The Light
- Llorca – Waiting
- Marika Hackman (feat. The Big Moon) – Boyfriend
- Mist – Dark Side
- Moby & The Void Pacific Choir – A Simple Love
The above titles are only the tip of the iceberg. Please check the following link if you want to listen to all new tracks I added to my recommendation playlist Carte Blanche Music last week.

Llorca – Waiting
Do you like Safe From Harm by Massive Attack? Thereâs Nothing Like This by Omar? Donât Look Any Further by Dennis Edwards & Siedah Garrett? In other words, do you like a fine groove? Then quickly hit the play button below and read on to find out moreâŚ
Llorca (first name: Ludovic) was born in the north of France in 1974. His father being one of the first computer programmers in the country and his mother being fond of music, his destiny was clear from the beginning: making music with computers. He started composing music for computer games on a Commodore 64 at the age of 14 and improved his skills from there on.
As a DJ, Llorca added black music genres like funk, disco and soul to the mix and gradually created his own style, that could be heard on his debut album New Comer in 2001. Since then he made many remixes under several aliases, but his second album has yet to come out. Well, save the date, for Llorca will release The Garden on 7 April. His groovy new single is appropriately called WaitingâŚ

Caravan Palace – Black Betty
To be honest I canât remember them performing it at their terrific Lowlands show last August, but itâs a fact Caravan Palace have played Lead Bellyâs Black Betty quite a lot in their concerts. On New Yearâs Eve they were invited to Jools Hollandâs Annual Hootenanny, where they did the cover as well.
Afterwards, by popular demand, they placed the audio of the studio version on YouTube. And guess what? Even though it doesnât move, itâs the fastest growing Caravan Palace video ever. In one weekâs time, it amassed nearly a million views.
Their next single proper, Midnight, will be released later this month. In the meantime, enjoy this jazzed-up version of Black Betty.

Carte Blanche Top 2016
Is there a better way to introduce myself and this new music blog than via a year-end chart? Last year in my Carte Blanche radio show I played over 800 new tracks, all of which you can find in this 2016 container playlist (subject to availability). Only 100 of them made it to the Carte Blanche Top 2016.
Some random statistics:
- After the usual suspects â Great-Britain (34) and United States (19) â the Netherlands deliver most entries (9), followed by Sweden (8), Belgium (6), Australia (5), Norway and France (4 each)
- 42% of all lead vocals are sung by women, which is unique compared to other radio stations
- There are more rock tracks in (the upper regions of) the Carte Blanche Top 2016 than in your average year-end chart
- The same goes for acts that were already successful 10, 20, even 30 years ago, proving they are still relevant today
If you want, you can listen to my radio show (in Dutch) containing the Top 30 of my year-end chart. Meanwhile you can browse through the complete list below. Enjoy!

Do You Still Love Me?
Watch this space!

In beide gevallen: veel plezier!
