Michelle David & The Gospel Sessions – Victory!
In the run-up to her fourth long-player, Michelle David was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thanks to a positive attitude with both a firm and courageous will, she fully recovered. Overcoming her illness became the main theme of her album The Gospel Sessions, Vol. 4.
Victory! is the key track on the record and indeed, it almost bursts with lust for life. On top of a Santana-like latin groove, David sings about her victory over fate.
The song is a good example of the overall triumphant tone of the album, which incorporates more strings, percussion, horns and even analogue synths.

Raphael Gualazzi – Carioca
Raphael Gualazzi is an Italian singer and pianist. In 2011, he won the Sanremo festival in the Best Newcomer category. A year later, he represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest, ending second.
Gualazzi just released his fifth studio album Ho Un Piano (which translates as ‘I have a plan’). He presented the first single off it, Carioca, at the Sanremo festival 2020. A great song, which starts in a typical Italian fashion, but with distinct latin, carnival and dance influences. As far as I’m concerned, spring has officially started.

Claire Laffut feat. Yseult – Nudes
Short introduction: Claire Laffut is a 23-year-old Belgian multi-talent, currently living in Paris. She writes, paints, draws and sings. Yseult (24) is a singer-songwriter and model, who was runner up in the tenth season of French TV talent show Nouvelle Star. Since then, she developed her own pop-trap hybrid, called ‘Y-trap’.
The single Nudes brings these upcoming talents together. It’s a fresh track, full of summer vibes and held together by a walking bassline. The song can be found on the mini album Molitor, named after the Paris hotel with its iconic retro swimming pool. The Nudes video was shot there, mixing vintage and modern styles. A feast for ears and eyes !

Wildcard (week 27):
Miki Núñez – Celébrate
By winning Spanish TV talent show Operación Triunfo, Miguel ‘Miki’ Núñez Pozo was selected to represent his country at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest. With the song La Venda he only ended 22nd, but all of that could be forgotten if his new single becomes the international (summer) hit I think it should be.
Celébrate is an ode to good, healthy living, but if you don’t speak Spanish, it’s still a great, uplifting ska-pop anthem. A well-produced song with horns, acoustic guitars and all of the other elements that bring out the sun.
Miki Núñez’ new single is the best way to celebrate the summer. Therefore, it’s this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Mamacita feat. Didy & Roy Paci – (Yo No Soy Tu) Nena
One of the things that make summer a bloody fine season, are summer hits. This might be a good contender for this year, I think…
Mamacita is an Italian collective of producers, DJ’s, MC’s and performers, which has its own radio show, releases compilation albums, hosts festivals, curates playlists and puts out songs. Their new single also features Dominican singer/dancer Didy and singer/trumpet player Roy Paci.
With Nena (which comes in an Italian and a Spanish version) the summer has officially started, as far as I’m concerned.

Juan Luis Guerra 4.40 – I Love You More
In his native Dominican Republic and the rest of the Latino world, Juan Luis Guerra and his band 4.40 are real superstars with the Midas touch. In other territories not everything they touch turns into gold, but they did score some hits along the way. Burbujas De Amor, for instance, is known to us all, I hope? Believe it or not, that was in 1991…
Fast forward to the spring of 2019. Wouldn’t it be great if the king of bachata-merengue had another worldwide hit? Perhaps I Love You More could do the trick. Its lyrics are not only in Spanish (which is considered difficult to sing-along to by most Europeans), but the chorus is in English. Musically, it sounds fully authentic, but also familiar to anyone who ever visited the Caribbean. All in all, it brings out the sun for three minutes.
