SlĂžtface – Telepathetic
In 2017, Norway four-piece SlÞtface released their debut album Try Not To Freak Out, which featured great singles like Magazine and Backyard. They just broke a two-year silence with a brand-new offering.
The bandâs brilliantly titled new single Telepathetic sees the band sharing production duties for the first time with Odd Martin SkĂ„lnes, who worked with fellow-Norwegians like Sigrid and Aurora before. The collaboration results in one of SlĂžtfaceâs most infectious, energetic and exciting songs so far.
Speaking about the new track, bassist Lasse LokĂžy says: âIt was written in approximately 2 hours, at 11 in the evening, after a full day of recording. Most of us donât remember any of it because we were so tired.â Singer Haley Shea adds:Â âItâs pretty much just about feeling youâre in the wrong place, like a small town or a job you donât like, and thinking âthere must be something else.â

Beachheads – Death Of A Nation
Norwegian pop-rock band Beachheads are a side project of Kvelertak members Vidar Landa and Marvin Nygaard. As you might have guessed from its title, their new single Death Of A Nation is pretty political, with lyrics taking on the rise of fascism worldwide. Musically, it reminds me of the Buzzcocks (which is never a bad thing).
The band explain: âDeath Of A Nation pursues the more punk side of Beachheads and was originally hammered out on an acoustic guitar â all the parts coming together first go. Later it became the first song that producer Frode StrĂžmstad picked out to record for the new album. We wanted to keep the rawness of our rehearsal room demo, so throughout the recording process we focused on enjoying ourselves, rather than overthinking it.â
Following their self-titled debut album (2017), Beachheads will release their second long-player later this year. Landa and Nygaardâs main band Kvelertak will do the same, introducing Ivar Nikolaisen (The Good The Bad & The Zugly) as their new singer.

Evil Edna – Isle Of Dogs
Evil Ednaâ are Paul Cockerham (vocals, harmonica), Joe Thompson (drums), Sam Taylor (bass), and Simon Land (guitar), a rockabilly punk band from London. They have a unique, genre-crossing sound, which blends gypsy harmonica, psychobilly guitar, thumping bass and upbeat drums, as if Madness, The Pogues and the Bintangs were put in a blender. Gogol Bordello fans will be delighted!
If youâre ready to stomp your feet and shake your hips, please meet Evil Edna!

Wernerâs Weekly (week 50)
In the past, when people were only exposed to music that was released in their own country, December was a month where nothing much happened, as far as new songs were concerned. Nowadays, with millions of artists all around the world putting their music on platforms like Spotify, available for everybody all over the planet, things are different. Of course, this month, you need to plow through all the well-intentioned Christmas mayhem (donât look any further, these are the all-time highlights), but then youâll find a wealth of great new tracks. By Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kakkmaddafakka, KT Tunstall, Smallpools or Underworld, for instance.
Below youâll find the cream of the crop: Wernerâs Weekly, your compass to the music that matters. Treat your ears via the Wernerâs Weekly player in the sidebar and/or click the links for more info:

Art Brut – She Kissed Me And It Felt Like A Hit
Art Brut, or as the Brits call it, Outsider Art is art by self-taught or naĂŻve art makers. When Eddie Argos formed a band, in 2003, he thought Art Brut was the perfect name for it. One of the first things he subsequently did, was writing a song about forming a band. It became their first hit.
15 years later, and seven years since their latest effort Brilliant! Tragic!, Art Brut just released their fifth album Wham! Bang! Pow! Let’s Rock Out! Argosâ trademark speak-sing delivery is still omnipresent, but we get horns as an added bonus. For instance on my favourite album track She Kissed Me And It Felt Like A Hit.
The song title refers to The Crystalsâ controversial 1962 single He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss). âI love a big glorious love song,â Argos says about it. âThis is one and itâs about love at first kiss, itâs about immediately knowing the person you are with is even better than appearing on Top Of The Pops and what could be more glorious than that?â

Knife Club – When My Eyes Are Heavy
Iâm excited to introduce you to the very first single of Knife Club. This band was formed by three experienced musicians of the Brighton music scene: singer/bassist Chris Hollands, drummer Dave Bishop and guitarist Louis May. They came together in an attempt to make something different to what they had done before, but also modern and relevant.
When My Eyes Are Heavy is a blast of fresh energy, influenced by bands such as Idles, Interpol and Thee Oh Sees. Knife Club recorded this debut at the Levellersâ Metway Studio, where it was produced by Toby May (The Maccabees, The Electric Soft Parade, Clearlake). Those are great references in my book!

Wernerâs Weekly (week 45)
Before the digital revolution, release strategies in the music business were clearly structured; the big-shot artists all came up with new material in October and November, well-placed to fully benefit from the tradition of exchanging presents at Christmas. The start of each new year was the best moment for emerging artists to drop new music, as the established ones had already shot their bolt in the months before.
However, things have changed since the arrival of â especially â the streaming platforms. They lowered the bar to put out music to a potentially worldwide audience, causing a diarrhoea of releases throughout the year, particularly on New Music Fridays. Personally, I love it, but the downside is, that weâre now in a situation of quantity over qualityâŠ
This is where Carte Blanche Music comes in! Each week, I listen to as many new songs as I can, but I only add the best tracks to my Carte Blanche Music Spotify playlist. Reel Big Fish – You Can’t Have All Of Me
At the end of the 80âs, Fishbone were one of the earliest ska punk bands. They were a real treat live. The 90âs gave us acts like No Doubt, Reel Big Fish, Smash Mouth and Rancid, but the last two centuries, hardly any ska punk band achieved mainstream success anymore. Wouldnât it be great to have a ska punk revival?
Maybe Reel Big Fish can lead the way again. Probably best-known for their early singles Sell Out, She Has A Girlfriend Now and a-ha cover Take On Me, the band have never really been away. But their new single You Canât Have All Of Me is their best in recent memory. Back to the old days, in a good way. Even better: a new album, Life Sucks… Letâs Dance, is announced for December. Party on, dudes!
