Wildcard (week 47):
Joel Culpepper – WAR
Now this is a sound we havenât heard in the charts for way too long: funky soul. Hopefully, Joel Culpepper can undo that injustice. The south-east London native just announced his debut album, with the rather brilliant title Sgt. Culpepper, for next year.
The long-player is preceded by a double A-sided single: Return/WAR. As is so often the case, the AA-side is my favourite. WAR is an upbeat track in the best James Brown tradition. For the youngsters among you, who may think: James who? Think Learnalilgivinandlovin by Gotye.
Addressing social and political undertones, WAR details Culpepperâs frustration with the hostile environment towards marginalised groups, expressing that âenough is enoughâ. WAR is an acronym for Without Any Restraint. The track was co-written by two musical heavy-weights. Jimmy Hogarth (who worked with Amy Winehouse, Sia, Tom Grennan, Paolo Nutini, Duffy, and many more) and Shawn Lee (a very prolific artist who worked with the likes of Lana Del Rey, Amy Winehouse, Alicia Keys, and is half of Young Gun Silver Fox).
Joel Culpepper. What is it good for? WAR! Itâs the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard.
In the Wildcards 2020 playlist youâll find all of this yearâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcards so far.

Mell & Vintage Future – Brand New Day
Mell & Vintage Future is a Dutch soul/R&B band, fronted by Melanie Jonk. She emerged after applying for TV talent show The Voice Of Holland. Sheâs backed by producers duo Vintage Future, consisting of drummer Ton Dijkman (who worked with Marco Borsato, Candy Dulfer a.o.) and Hammond player Nico Brandsen (Ilse DeLange, Anouk, Kane a.o.).
Brand New Day is the first single off the trioâs upcoming sophomore album. With its driving four to the floor beat and rousing organ part, itâs a fresh burst of energy. Mell says about the powerful track: âIt deal with this very moment, where we canât do that much and restrictions are everywhere. But we are still going to live the moment to the max.â
Soul with a capital S!

Rick Astley – Every One Of Us
A lot has changed since Rick Astley started his career as a tea boy in the Stock Aitken Waterman studios. His first proper single Never Gonna Give You Up (1987) was a worldwide smash and in the years that followed, he sold over 40 million records. After 1993, Astley retired from the music industry at the age of 27, deciding that family life was more important.
In 2007, he made an unlikely comeback as an internet phenomenon. His Never Gonna Give You Up video showed up everywhere unexpectedly, a viral internet meme known as ârickrollingâ.
On 25 October, Astley releases a new greatest hits album: The Best Of Me. It features original and reimagined versions of his hits, as well as the new song Every One Of Us. A tune with a surprising new sound, in line with that of Rag ânâ Bone Man and Hozier. Astley wrote and produced the song himself, and played all of the instruments on it. A great and welcome return!

House Of Spirituals – Too Many Days [Ninja Mix]
House Of Spirituals are a rather mysterious London-based project, apparently featuring a British and a Spanish member. When they released their debut single Too Many Days at the end of 2015, it was immediately clear theyâre inspired by Alan Lomaxâs field recordings and have an obsession with âelectronic soul meets swap stompâ.
At the time, they explained in an interview the song was written by the band as a message of hope to themselves, having been in a desolate place. âWe had just been talking about the dark times we were going through. The room felt really heavy as it was one of those times when you donât have an answer to the situation youâre going through. Straight away I went over to the piano and the words âtoo many days, Iâve been downâ came straight out. Then the rest of the song carried on writing itself and got more positive. It became almost a âcall of armsâ for us to get up and fight our way out of the darkness.â
Three years later, the world has gotten to know artists like Hozier and Rag ânâ Bone Man, who operate in the same musical field as House Of Spirituals. A great moment to try and launch their career on a broader scale with this beefed-up version of the song that started it allâŠ

Kid Rock – Snatching It Back
This week, the album Muscle Shoals: Small Town, Big Sound comes out. It features artists like Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) & Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme), Eli âPaperboyâ Reed, Michael McDonald, Aloe Blacc, Candi Staton and Brently Stephen Smith (Shinedown) interpreting tunes initially made famous by The Rolling Stones, Etta James, the Staple Singers, Wilson Pickett, Bob Seger, Bob Dylan and others.
Kid Rock releases the first single off the project. He covers Clarence Carter’s Snatching It Back, using the original instrumental bed from 1969 (featuring the iconic Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section), with added electric piano by session veteran Jim âMooseâ Brown. Surely, nothing beats the original, but this comes very close!
