Cookin’ On 3 Burners – The Jump Off
Six weeks ago, when Warning by Cookin’ On 3 Burners feat. Kaiit was the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, I already mentioned its great instrumental B-side The Jump Off. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one to like that track, as the Australian Hammond organ trio has now decided to release it as a single in its own right.
The Jump Off, which will feature on the band’s next album Lab Experiments Vol. 2, just like Warning, is a brilliant funk track, that I would have loved to have heard James Brown’s vocals on.
For this new single, Cookin’ On 3 Burners asked B-boys and B-girls to submit their moves and represent their city. Breakers The Wildup Crew (Rome), Young Masters Crew (Melbourne), Bboy Levi (Erlangen), Bboy Bruce Wayne (Paris), and Bboy Banjo (Sunshine) were chosen to feature in the video. The result is a crowd sourced collaboration cut together highlighting their skills and celebrating the funk.

Jennie Lena – Trouble
After touring the world with her mother, who was a singer as well, Jennie Willemstijn (professionally known as Jennie Lena) started singing backing vocals for Dutch star Anouk. It wasn’t long before she started to write and perform her own songs and releasing her own albums.
Despite her status as a well-known and much-loved singer, she appeared in season 6 of ‘The Voice Of Holland’. Making it all the way to the finals, she ended in fourth place.
Her third full album of self-written songs, out in October, was preceded last spring by her EP Trouble. The title track is out now as Jennie’s new single, once again proving her world-class talent.

Harlea – Beautiful Mess
One of my first recommendations on this blog, in January 2017, was You Don’t Get It, the second single by then 22-year-old Londoner Harlea. That was the follow-up to her incredible debut Miss You.
Since then, things have been rather quiet around her, but she hasn’t sat still. Now living in Los Angeles and London in equal measure, Harlea collaborated with über hot producers/writers the Rock Mafia (who worked with Eminem, Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, Green Day and others before), resulting in (as a press release formulates) ‘hook laden, driving anthemic tunes that are drenched in groove and attitude’.
Beautiful Mess is only Harlea’s third single, but she obviously has a bright future before her!

Theo Lawrence & The Hearts – Never Let It Go
Theo Lawrence, still only in his early twenties, is a singer-songwriter from Paris, and a self-taught guitar and piano player. But when surrounded by his band The Hearts (Thibault Lecocq – drums, Nevil Bernard – keyboards, Louis Marin Renaud – guitar, and Olivier Viscat – bass), he is committed to the microphone.
They make soulful rock with touches of rhythm & blues and surf, positioning themselves between Charles Bradley, Tony Joe White and even Johnny Cash. Since 2016’s debut EP Sticky Icky, Never Let It Go is their third piece of new music. A pure, surprisingly adult song, that gets under your skin.
This week, Theo Lawrence & The Hearts release their first full album Homemade Lemonade in France. The rest of us will have to wait until 27 April…

Welshly Arms – Legendary
Welshly Arms are not from Wales. Nope. This four-piece, named after a sketch in Saturday Night Live, are from Cleveland, Ohio. They blend genres like blues, gospel, rhythm & blues and rock and mention Jimi Hendrix, The Temptations, Otis Redding and Howlin’ Wolf as their influences.
For those who find it hard to imagine how that sounds, just take Hozier in mind. If you like his music, you should definitely check out Welshly Arms. I bet you’ll like it!

Harlea – You Don’t Get It
This 22 year old north London singer-songwriter first came on my radar last September with her incredible song Miss You. If you like references: think The Kills, Garbage and Arctic Monkeys. Lyrically the song is about the thin between love and obsession. Intriguing…
And now, Harlea has her second single out. You Don’t Get It crams equal parts blues, rhythm & blues and rock into one three-minute track.
Don’t expect her to be all over the (social) media just yet, as she feels the world is characterised by over-exposure. She’d rather want you to learn about her bit by bit, via her music. So here’s your second introduction into her world.
