Roads To Roam – We Are
As you know, all roads lead to Rome. But apparently, Hilversum (the Netherlands) 5-piece Roads To Roam prefers to wander around. Which doesnât mean theyâre not ambitious. On the contrary. They certainly have a goal, and eventually they will get there.
Last year, Roads To Roam presented their 7-track debut EP A Guide To Your Mind, featuring the great singles Building Bridges and Walking Away. The band hasnât sat still since then. They continued writing new songs and yesterday evening, in their hometown, they presented their new single We Are with the accompanying video. Instead of just playing the clip they did a full-blown concert, showcasing their skills without being afraid to honour their musical heroes, like Kings Of Leon and fellow Dutch band Kensington. Bands that are more than modestly popular, who could use some company to keep themselves sharp. Roads To Roam are more than willing to fulfil that role. Onwards to Rome!

High Contrast – Shotgun Mouthwash
High Contrast is the stage name of British remixer and drum & bass-producer Lincoln Barrett, whose father was the manager of Shakin’ Stevens, decades ago. High Contrast released one or more singles in most years of this century so far, and the diversity of styles he displays is incredible. Thatâs great from an artistic point of view, but it doesnât make it easy to pigeonhole his music. And⊠thatâs great from an artistic point of view as well đ
His new single Shotgun Mouthwash is from the âT2 Trainspottingâ soundtrack and vaguely sounds like a psyched up version of Norman Greenbaumâs Spirit In The Sky. I tagged its genre as ârockâ for stereotyping purposes, but feel free to give it any other label you like. High Contrast probably couldnât care less.

Grouplove – Good Morning
This band was formed in 2005 by five American friends, one of them being the son of Trevor Rabin (former guitarist in symphonic rock band Yes). Ryan Rabin is the drummer and producer of Grouplove, and also one third of songwriting/production/remix team Captain Cuts, who worked for Walk The Moon, Tove Lo, Halsey, Marina & The Diamonds and many others.
Grouploveâs best-known song is Tongue Tied, from their 2011 debut album Never Trust A Happy Song. Their latest album Big Mess, co-produced by Phil Ek of The Shins, Band Of Horses and Fleet Foxes fame, already spawned the great singles Welcome To Your Life, Do You Love Someone, Traumatized and Enlighten Me. But there is more where these are coming from, as the fifth single Good Morning proves.

Drive Like Maria – Taillight
This Belgian/Dutch band broke through via the Global Battle Of The Bands in 2005. After winning the Dutch qualifying round, they ended second in the international finals, which landed them a record deal.
Drive Like Maria recently released the EPâs Creator and Preserver and bundled them with 4 additional tracks into the album Creator, Preserver, Destroyer. The new single Taillight is easily their most accessible and commercially sounding yet. Playlist material, both for radio and Spotify.

Archive – The False Foundation
Archive was formed in London as a trip-hop band, back in 1994. Now, ten studio albums later, they combine electronic and rock in a hybrid of their own.
In October last year they released they latest album, The False Foundation. The title track has been chosen as the third single off it. The band couples a pulsating rhythm, that brings on flashbacks to the eighties, with layers of guitars and industrial sound effects without losing sight of the melody. Itâs actually just a pop song in disguise.

MaxĂŻmo Park – Risk To Exist
Lovely to have MaxĂŻmo Park back on the scene. Not that they have been away, really. The band release their sixth album Risk To Exist on 21 April and announce they have added more ‘soulful grooves’ to their trademark hook-laden melodies. The record was recorded completely live in Wilcoâs studio The Loft in Chicago, with Tom Schick (Wilco, Beck) producing. Mimi Parker from the band Low lends his warm voice to five of the tracks.
One of those is the title track, a plea for humanity, which has been chosen as the first single off the album.

Biffy Clyro – Flammable
The first incarnation of what would eventually become Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro, called Skrewfish, was formed in 1995. The members were only teens by then. It took until 2002 before their debut album would come out. Last year, the trio released their seventh long player, Ellipsis.
After opening for the likes of The Who, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Rolling Stones, Biffy Clyro are now firm headliners themselves. The next two weeks theyâll be doing concerts all over Europe. One song thatâs certain to be on the setlist is their new single Flammable.
Do you remember last yearâs Everybody by Don Broco? That incredible track ended second in the Carte Blanche Top 2016. This Biffy Clyro song has the same tight, staccato production. Ch-ch-check it out!

Blaudzun – Press On (Mondayâs Child)
The Netherlands are a small country. Or, in economic terms, a small market. Not many artists can live from their music. Unless, perhaps, when they manage to break through internationally.
Blaudzun is already selling out concerts in Belgium and Germany. May many more countries follow! And if not, he can perhaps take courage from his own new single. Thatâs an encouragement to bravely go on in case of set-back. He wrote it for his teeny daughter, by the wayâŠ
