Search Party Animal – Enemies
Search Party Animal are a 5-piece electronic rock band from Dublin, who operated as Bagels before. They are fronted by multi-instrumentalist Adam Redmond, the principal songwriter. The average age of the band members is 19 (n-n-n-n-nineteen).
They only released their debut single Evergreen in March, and Enemies is its follow-up. An Imagine Dragons-like track, that bursts out of the speakers.

Broken Social Scene – Vanity Pail Kids
Broken Social Scene is a Canadian rock band, that was formed in 1999. It’s a musical collective, whose members also play in other well-known Canadian bands, like Metric, Feist and Stars (who featured here only recently). Over the years, Broken Social Scene included six to nineteen(!) members, with eighteen musicians being credited on their newest long player.
Last month, seven years after their latest CD Forgiveness Rock Record, the band released the album Hug Of Thunder. Four teaser tracks were put online as a warming-up to the fans, and Vanity Pail Kids is the first single to receive a real video. A welcome return!

Static Panic – Fluid Funky Butter Sweet
Whether it’s pop, dance or rock, music gets so much better when the recipe contains a pinch of funk! Static Panic show impeccable taste in that respect. They’re a brand new trio, comprised of producer/performers Ro, Keston, and Eli. Hailing from Minneapolis, one can hear the influence of the purple one shine through. Both musically and lyrically, with themes like queerness, love and heartbreak.
The band’s debut single, the tongue twister Fluid Funky Butter Sweet, alongside another track they put out on streaming services (Lose You To The Night), is a fine introduction, preparing us for the release of their debut album, probably in the fall.
On 12 August Static Panic, together with eight other Minnesota acts, play a free festival in downtown Minneapolis. They will very likely draw the largest crowd in their young career, so if you happen to be in the neighbourhood…

Freak – No Money
The times you could (very) roughly say: ‘pop comes from Britain, rock from the United States’ are far behind us. On the contrary: the most interesting developments in British music are based in rock (although they have yet to translate into the charts, for what that’s worth). You can find numerous good examples of this on Carte Blanche Music. Let me give you another one…
19-year-old Connar Ridd (vocals, guitar) goes by the name of Freak and has already been described as a ‘one-man Nirvana’. But he probably likes Arctic Monkeys as well. And he went to the same school as Rat Boy, who uses the same kind of rap-rock to express himself.
No Money is Freak’s new single.

Stars – Fluorescent Light
Stars is a Canadian theatrical pop/rock band, which is active since the year 2000. Since then, they’ve released eight studio albums and 19 singles, with among them the most wonderful titles, like A Lot Of Little Lies For The Sake Of One Big Truth and Hold On When You Get Love And Let Go When You Give It.
The ninth album is on its way. There Is No Love In Fluorescent Light will be out in October. New single Fluorescent Light is more or less the album’s title track, but apart from that: it’s great!

Arcane Roots – Off The Floor
If you like the ambitious, progressive music of bands like Clock Opera, combining guitar riffs and electronica, you might want to check out Arcane Roots. This alternative rock band from Kingston Upon Thames, UK, that already released the mini album Left Fire (2011), full album debut Blood And Chemistry (2013) and another mini album, Heaven And Earth (2015), are now back.
Their second full-length Melancholia Hymns is slated for a 15 September release. Another complex musical journey for the head and the heart, preceded by the great single Off The Floor. A sure-fire floor filler during their upcoming tour.

Milk Teeth – Prism
‘Female-fronted’ is the thing in the British rock scene at the moment. Please, let me introduce you to Milk Teeth from Stroud, Gloucestershire. The band consists of bassist and vocalist Becky Blomfield, guitarists Chris Webb and Billy Hutton and drummer Oli Holbrook, and was formed in May 2013.
Since then they released the EP Smiling Politely, the EP Sad Sack and their first album Vile Child. This got them signed to famous rock label Roadrunner Records, which just released their new EP Be Nice. And that’s not all, another EP is already in the books for release in the autumn.
Prism is Milk Teeth’s new single.

Werner’s Weekly (week 31)
The likes of Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music made it easier than ever to keep track with new music. Whether you’re at home, on the beach, in your car or on safari: a smartphone with your service of choice is all you need. Oh, and you need the time to browse through all of the available playlists to pick the tracks of your liking…
If that’s too much hustle for you, trust me to it. I listen to music in every spare minute and love to select the best new songs for you on a daily basis. Just check (and follow) my Carte Blanche Music playlist and hear for yourself! Last week I added Belle & Sebastian, The Killers, Pvris, Sløtface, Superfood and many more to that playlist. Each and every one of them great tracks. But the very best of them – in my opinion – are listed alphabetically below (listen through the Werner’s Weekly player):
- Wolf Parade – Valley Boy (Wildcard this week)
- Aloe Blacc – King Is Born (Wildcard last week)
- Drones Club – International
- Jade Bird – Cathedral
- Nicole Atkins – Sleepwalking
- Skott – Mermaid
- The Montreals – Deadheads
- Young Gun Silver Fox – Midnight In Richmond

Inheaven – World On Fire
Inheaven is a female-fronted rock band from London. They’re fishing in the same pond as Honeyblood, Deap Vally and Black Honey, but for me there can’t be enough bands like this.
Hopefully their mix of shoegazing and grunge, combined with a do it yourself mentality, is about to counter-balance the quantity of electronica in the current pop landscape. World On Fire is Inheaven’s new single!
