Marika Hackman (feat. The Big Moon) – Boyfriend
The Marika Hackman on Boyfriend appears to be a different Marika Hackman than we heard on her folky, downtempo debut album We Slept At Last. On her new single, Marika teams up with the band The Big Moon, which results in a triumphant, upbeat affair, full of power chords.
And that is only the musical side of things. Boyfriendâs lyrics are great as well. Witty, ironic and flat out funny. The song is about a boy who doesnât take his girlfriendâs cheating seriously because itâs with another girl, not another boy. I hope Marika has more of these gems up her sleeve for her next album!

Trip To Dover – Iâll Be Juliet
Trip To Dover are a Dutch electronic rock duo, consisting of singer/guitarist Olga and her husband and keyboard wizard Johannes Taal. Before they decided to turn to music, they were an architect and a politician. How is that for a career switch?
The past years, they released the EPâs Celestial Objects, Vegas And Berlin and Kiss Fight Dance, that were better and better received by blogs and radio stations (the track In This Rain still is a personal favourite of mine), and built them an enthusiastic following all over the world.
Now, itâs time (high time) for their debut album Fade Into Gold, that will be released on 24 February (both on vinyl, CD and online). It contains eight songs, including two versions of last yearâs single Boy. Their new single is a totally revamped 2017 version of Iâll Be Juliet, that already featured on their second EP. We can hear Olga singing: âDo we believe in second chances?â. And Iâd like to shout back at her: âYes, we do!â

Black Star Riders – Testify Or Say Goodbye
Remember Thin Lizzy? Werenât they great?! Between 1971 and 1983 the band, with frontman Phil Lynott, recorded an album almost every year. At the end of 1983 Thin Lizzy disbanded and three years later Lynott died.
Since then, several bandmembers were involved in other projects and tributes, sometimes operating under the name of Thin Lizzy. They even decided to record new material together, but âout of respect to Phil Lynott and the legacy he createdâ this would not happen as Thin Lizzy. In 2012 they decided upon the band name Black Star Riders.
Their third album Heavy Fire has just been released and Testify Or Say Goodbye is the current single. Remember Thin Lizzy?

Findlay – Waste My Time
25-year old Natalie Rose Findlay was born in Stockport, but currently lives in London. The first thing I heard from her, in 2015, was the song Electric Bones. A track with the same vibe as The Ting Tings’ Shut Up And Let Me Go. It was the title track of an EP that also contained the song Off And On, which featured in a BMW TV commercial.
Findlay’s first album, Forgotten Pleasures, will be released on 17 February. This is the â literally â breath taking video for her new single Waste My Time.

The Hunna – Piece By Piece
British rock band The Hunna only exists since 2015. They name bands like Kings Of Leon, Foals and Queen as their inspiration. Last August The Hunna released their first album 100, which included the singles Bonfire, We Could Be, You And Me and Still Got Blood. Saving the best for last, they just came up with the fifth single off the record: Piece By Piece.

Cold War Kids – Love Is Mystical
Cold War Kids make serious music. Seriously good music, as well. Which doesnât mean theyâre not in for a little fun from time to time. Three years ago, for example, they were involved in a project with Belgian beer brewer Stella Artois, where they used beer glasses as instruments. This resulted in the track A Million Eyes.
Just over ten years after their debut album Robbers And Cowards, Cold War Kids finished their sixth long player. L.A. Divine will be released on 7 April, but the first single is already here. Love Is Mystical is a banger, with a piano that bears enough resemblance with the intro of Fat Boy Slimâs Praise You to sound familiar, without being very similar at all. Catchy tune!

Nick Capaldi – Disgrace Face
Remember Jim Capaldi, best known as the drummer in Traffic in the late sixties and early seventies of the last century? He sadly passed away in 2005, but his musical genes still wander around in the family.
A distant relative of Jim’s – the talented multi-instrumentalist Nick Capaldi – will release his new album Neon Heart on 19 May. I read somewhere that all of the tracks could be a single (pretty promising) and his bio calls him âone of the UKâs hottest rising musiciansâ. But then again: thatâs what every bio says. At least every bio of upcoming British artists đ
So letâs just judge the man by his musicâŠ
I really like his new single Disgrace Face, so thatâs a good start. I hear a little bit of Blur in it and a little bit of Sparks even, and in places it makes you want to sing Ruby Tuesday, which is never a bad thing. But all in all itâs a smart slice of pop rock that should be able to give Nick Capaldi the attention he deserves.

Roads To Roam – We Are
As you know, all roads lead to Rome. But apparently, Hilversum (the Netherlands) 5-piece Roads To Roam prefers to wander around. Which doesnât mean theyâre not ambitious. On the contrary. They certainly have a goal, and eventually they will get there.
Last year, Roads To Roam presented their 7-track debut EP A Guide To Your Mind, featuring the great singles Building Bridges and Walking Away. The band hasnât sat still since then. They continued writing new songs and yesterday evening, in their hometown, they presented their new single We Are with the accompanying video. Instead of just playing the clip they did a full-blown concert, showcasing their skills without being afraid to honour their musical heroes, like Kings Of Leon and fellow Dutch band Kensington. Bands that are more than modestly popular, who could use some company to keep themselves sharp. Roads To Roam are more than willing to fulfil that role. Onwards to Rome!
