Casey Lowry – Boyfriend
Casey Lowry is the king of the killer chorus. The 21-year-old rising newcomer from London has some infectious singles to his name already, and here’s another one. It precedes his upcoming second EP, which is due for release in September 2019.
Boyfriend recounts a humorous yet unfortunate moment with a girl and her new boyfriend. It’s a fresh and dynamic song, that’s built around addictive guitar riffs and sing-a-long hooks, and has been produced by frequent Lana Del Rey collaborator Tim Lacombe.

Nix Dadry (feat. Julie Claire) – Station Street East
Fans of Lenny Kravitz, The Heavy and Aerosmith: please let me introduce you to your new favourite artist, Nix Dadry. Originally from the West Midlands, UK, he now lives in London. Following his 2018 debut album Magic Water, he just released his new EP Screwface.
Station Street East is the EP’s first single. Moved by the black American roots of blues, soul and funk, Dadry describes its musical style as ‘multi-influenced rock’. Lyrically, it reflects on where he grew up, and comments on where we come from in life and where we end up.
Finally, I think a special mention of the uncredited featured singer is in place: Julie Claire isn’t just a background singer, she really adds to the song.|

Olympia – Star City
Following an earlier release as a promotional single, Star City gets the full treatment now that Olympia’s second album Flamingo is out. This is the song that opens the long-player, and immediately sets it apart from her earlier work. The hip hop beats of her first album Self Talk are replaced with catchy rock songs.
Olympia is the musical project of Australian singer-songwriter Olivia Jayne Bartley.

Pyro – F.O.M.O.
Pyro (which means ‘fire’ in Greek) are a Dutch band, consisting of two singer/guitarists and a tight rhythm section. This already sounds powerful and energetic on paper, not to mention live. Think Foo Fighters, The Offspring, Kings Of Leon, Audioslave and Linkin Park.
The band’s upcoming debut EP counts four solid rock songs, which were mixed by Ronald Prent (Rammstein and many others) en mastered by Ted Jensen (Green Day, Kings Of Leon and lots more). F.O.M.O. (Fear Of Missing Out) is Pyro’s new single. Its message is as strong as their sound: it’s better to do one thing to the fullest, than more things half-heartedly.

Skunk Anansie – What You Do For Love
When Skunk Anansie announced their current huge European headline tour in support of the band’s recent 25live@25 album, I couldn’t help but hope for new material. Little did I know my silent wish would come true.
What You Do For Love is the Brit rockers’ first new music since 2016’s album Anarchytecture and it’s great as ever. Instantly recognizable as a Skunk Anansie song, it’s raw but melodic, emotional and political. The track explores the lengths one would go to for love and the questionable things people do for power.
Destined to become a fan favourite during their live shows!

Wildcard (week 28):
Frank Turner – Sister Rosetta
A stadium act in his home country Great Britain, Frank Turner has yet to reach the general public abroad. But his popularity is steadily growing through constant touring.
His new single Sister Rosetta is a very ‘90s-sounding guitar pop song (Fountains Of Wayne’s Stacy’s Mom springs to mind, but without the power chords) and an ode to Sister Rosetta Tharpe. A musical and spiritual example for artists like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, she was nicknamed the ‘Godmother of rock ‘n roll’.
The single precedes Turner’s new album No Man’s Land, which will count 13 songs: 12 about historically important women and one about his own mother. A release date has not yet been set, but what I can announce, is that Sister Rosetta by Frank Turner is this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Imani Coppola – Lying To My Therapist
Imani Coppola’s new single is another raucous affair. Just like her recent song Rattle, it only needs 2 minutes to make its point.
Lying To My Therapist is a punky tune, in which she confesses self-destruction habits like not taking her medication and isolating herself from the outside world, while fearing to tell her therapist about it. Coppola explains: “I began to withhold information to spare myself the scrutiny of analysis, and in some cases the shame of repeating the same mistakes over and over, and having to report to her about it every week.”
In the gripping climax she basically reads her own eulogy: “Here lies the body of a female in her 40’s / A New York City refugee deceased in North Woodholly / Survived by 5 cigarettes / In a pack of American spirits / Left her fortune to her cat and the duck.”

The Black Keys – Shine A Little Light
When they finished touring their 2014 album Turn Blue, The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach said he had become so alienated from his job, that he could play to a huge crowd without thinking about what he was doing. The five-year break that followed, allowed and Patrick Carney him to focus again. Last week, the band returned with their tenth album “Let’s Rock”.
According to Auerbach, the inspiration for the album’s title was a news story regarding the execution of convicted murderer Edmund Zagorski that he read while the band was recording the album. When asked for any last words before his execution, Zagorski reportedly told the guard, “Let’s rock”, before being executed via the electric chair. This also explains the prominent placing of the death machine on the album’s artwork.
Not wasting any time, the record opens with a track that’s a firm favourite of mine. Shine A Little Light immediately shows the double meaning of the album title. It has the kind of great riff the band are popular for. Hard on the one hand, but irresistibly poppy on the other. This would make a great single!
