Calby – The Everyday Bit
Young people embracing good old soul music, isn’t that just great? The Everyday Bit is the debut single of Calby, the stage name of Danish musician Mik Thybo. He ‘explores undiscovered territory between soul music, pop and indie rock, with songs about love, greed and anxiety’, according to his bio.
Lending its first three notes from Robert Plant’s Big Log, The Everyday Bit continues as a one of a kind song. It sounds authentic, even though it’s built around the best elements of sixties soul music.
Calby wrote and produced the song with Luke Graham bass player Magnus Larsson. They recorded the tune on an analogue 8-track recorder, which gives it a warm and nostalgic sound.

Con Brio & Lyrics Born – Mistakes
In 2017, Con Brio first shared the stage with rapper Lyrics Born. From that moment on, they knew they wanted to work with him. This resulted in a recording session in Con Brio’s own studio. The session produced two songs: Sundown, to be released later this month, and new single Mistakes.
The latter combines the band’s rocking soul with the rapper’s cool, contemporary raps. Think Anderson .Paak, but funkier. “In the studio, I felt like I understood them instantly, and it was effortless”, Lyric Born said about Con Brio. “I gave my input in the recording process as a band, and they knew how to bring the best out of me as well. It has been nothing good vibes since day one, which will ultimately come across in the recordings.”
Both tracks are perfect promotion for Con Brio and Lyrics Born’s collaborative tour along the American East Coast, next October.

Citizen Kay – Ego
At the age of six, Citizen Kay and his family migrated from Ghana to Australia. He made it his mission to make music that blended traditional hip hop with soul, jazz, blues and rock. He refined this task with each new album, developing into a seasoned songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer.
Following his debut mini album Demokracy (2014), With The People (2015) and Belly Of The Beast (2017), he has now written brand-new material. The first of these songs is his new single Ego. A true vibe-starter with its funk-filled guitar and bassline, and swirling keys and strings.
Citizen Kay explains the motivation behind the song: “Ego might seem like a song about me chasing a long lost love or something. But it’s my love/hate relationship with money.”

Twin Peaks – Dance Through It
In the early ‘90s, I was a huge fan of Twins Peaks, the TV series by David Lynch. Some 20 years later, I started being a huge fan of Twin Peaks, the band from Chicago. Their latest studio album dates back to 2016, but the group will release their fourth full length, Lookout Low, in September. It has been produced by Ethan Johns (Kings Of Leon, Ryan Adams and Counting Crows, among many others).
Dance Through It, one of Twin Peaks’ smoothest and sultry tracks yet, is the album’s first single. It is said to have started off as a demo that sounded like a Sheryl Crow song, but along the way, it grew into a tune with a soulful vibe. It fully comes to life in the final minute, when a few more horns inject some extra spirit.

Lily Moore – Over You
20-year-old Brixton-based singer-songwriter Lily Moore grew up listening to soul legends like Etta James, Lauryn Hill and Sam Cooke. She started her musical career busking the streets of her hometown, singing her heroes’ repertoire. Soon, she started translating their inspiration into her own songs, which are disarmingly honest, and stripped back in style.
About her new single Over You, Lily Moore says: “I think it’s almost easier sometimes when you split up from someone and you both hate each other, because at least then you know how you feel. This song was for me about all the things the person was going to have to do in order for me to hate them and to fully move on.”

Aṣa – Good Thing
Aṣa Bukola Elemide was born in Paris to Nigerian parents. They returned to live in Nigeria when she was two, but 20 years later, Asa returned to Paris, where her musical career took off. Her artist name Aṣa (pronounced as ‘Asja’) means ‘hawk’ in the Yoruba language.
Last May, she broke a five-year silence with her single The Beginning. With the quick follow-up Good Thing, which is equal parts soul and jazz, she keeps the vibe going. Let’s hope a new album (her fourth) is not far away…

The Allergies feat. Andy Cooper – 2 Much!
The Allergies (a production/DJ outfit consisting of Rackabeat and Moneyshot, from Bristol, UK) are a busy bunch. Their stream of releases never seems to dry, they’re gigging all over the place, record podcasts and mixtapes, and make remixes of other people’s tunes (most recently of Get A Hold On This by Aldo Vanucci feat. Kylie Auldist)…
Next up is this great new single. 2 Much! is funky as hell, groovy as no other and full of vibes. It features Marietta Smith on vocals, Mr. Woodnote on sax, and of course lyrics by Andy Cooper, who is rapidly becoming The Allergies’ third member. Talking of speed: 2 Much! includes one of the fastest rap verses ever laid down. Ch-ch-check it out!
