Wildcard (week 31):
The Magic Gang – Make Time For Change
Brighton quartet The Magic Gang offer a wide range of musical styles. Personally, I like them best when they enter The Style Council territory. In other words: when they revisit the Northern Soul sound. The band did so with recent single Think, and they’re back at it with their new track Make Time For Change.
Lead vocalist Gus Taylor explains, “Make Time For Change is a song about self-care. It’s a reminder to look after yourself and to encourage yourself to do the things that make you feel good.”
28 August, The Magic Gang will release their second album Death Of The Party. This horn-driven new single will feature on the vinyl Bonus Edition and digital formats of that long-player. It was recorded in Atlanta with producer Ben H. Allen (Deerhunter, Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley).
This week, Make Time For Change will feature prominently on Carte Blanche Music. It’s the new Wildcard!

Wildcard (week 28):
Grace Farriss – All The People
Grace Farriss has lived on an artistic and musical diet all of her life. She grew up in the UK and Australia, as the daughter of Andrew Farriss, the main composer/songwriter for INXS. Growing up, she was always encouraged to play the piano and guitar. Eventually, she became a poet, singer, songwriter, composer, producer, painter, artist, author and environmentalist.
In 2017, she wrote All The People, which celebrates the interconnection between the diverse cultures that shape the world. The song has just been released as her debut single. It’s a ‘70s-inspired funky disco track, driven by a tight drum, horn and bass groove. Think of it as a more organic version of Lola’s Theme by The Shapeshifters. And the guitar that drops in after 1 minute reminds me of the opening riff of Sausolito Summernight by Diesel. What a great way to start a career!
Farriss is set to release her debut album Grace later this year, featuring performances from some of the world’s greatest musicians. The ‘thank you’ section in the booklet will include The Section Quartet, Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley) on drums, Joey Waronker (Beck) on drums, Abe Rounds (Andrew Bird, Meshell Ndegeocello) on drums, Benji Lysaght (Adele, Father John Misty) on guitar, Ralph Carney (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, The B-52’s) on saxophone, John Kirby (Solange) on keys, and Todd M. Simon (Angel City All-Star Brass Band) on horns.
Grace Farriss’ very first single All The People is this week’s new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

The Allergies (feat. The Cuban Brothers) – Let Them Know
It may be summer for months in large parts of Europe, but meteorologically, it has only just begun. Right on time, The Allergies release their sunny new single Let Them Know.
Bristol’s finest serve up a hotbed of big hip-hop drums, huge funky horns, and dynamite boogaloo rhythms. This provides the perfect backdrop for the vocals of party starters The Cuban Brothers. Boosted by a massively catchy chorus, the track creates a full-on carnival atmosphere.
Let Them Know is the latest single to be released ahead of The Allergies’ upcoming album Say The Word. Let’s get this party started!

Josephien – Talk To Me
Incredible how a small country like Belgium can hold so much talent. Take Josefien Deloof, for instance. In 2018, she and her band won the public’s choice award at the Rock Rally competition. Since then, they toured a lot in Belgium and its neighbouring countries. During that time, she changed stage names a few times. Josefien became Josephine, but she now goes by the moniker of Josephien. Details matter!
Early this year, I saw her performing a Warner Music showcase at the ESNS festival. An impressive set, even though she was onstage with only a keyboard. And honestly, her recognizable, husky voice (reminiscent of Selah Sue’s) doesn’t need much instrumental accompaniment. Her debut single Talk To Me is great proof of that. The start of it, with only a simple guitar melody alongside her voice, immediately makes for a lounge-y feel. Only a few soft high synth notes and a languid rhythm section are added, and that’s all the song needs.
Josephien doesn’t believe in musical monogamy. Therefore, she hasn’t decided upon her musical direction yet. But the restrained happiness of this confident, soulful debut single fits her like a glove.

The Haggis Horns – Haggis Express
I’m a sucker for bands with great horn sections. The likes of Chicago and Tower Of Power. Or the Dap-Kings, who worked with Sharon Jones, and later with artists like Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson.
UK funk/soul kings The Haggis Horns were new to me. My fault, because they’re around for over two decades, working with Corinne Bailey Rae, Lily Allen, Jamiroquai, and many more. I only heard of them recently, when doing research for my recommendation of Izo FitzRoy’s Red Line.
The Haggis Horns are about to release their fifth album Stand Up For Love. Its first single is the full-on instrumental banger Haggis Express, for all you funk/soul brothers and sisters out there.
Groovy rhythm section: check.
Scratchy funk guitar: check.
Fiery hammond organ solo: check.
Latin fire congas: check.
A horn section so sharp you could shave with their riffs: check.
It’s never too late to discover a great old band. Please meet The Haggis Horns. Pure dirty funk at it’s best.

Carmanah – Best Interests
Canadian band Carmanah took its name from the rainforests in the province of British Columbia. One can imagine why. Their music is steamy, moody, shimmering and brooding. Imagine a spooky, soulful melting pot with elements of roots, blues and (soft) rock. It’s got a bit of a trip hop vibe as well, and an atmosphere comparable with Concrete Blonde’s Joey. Hope that makes sense. If not, all you can do is listen (which is highly recommended anyway).
Best Interests is Carmanah’s new single. It comes with a driving melody, lush instrumentation, and Laura Mina Mitic’s soulfully luminous vocals. Following As I See You, Best Interests is the second single to be released ahead of the band’s upcoming sophomore album Iris.
