The Night Game – It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
With an iconic title like It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine), there’s no doubt what song this is about. It first appeared on R.E.M.’s 1987 album Document. That same year, and in 1991, it was released as a single. Obviously, The Night Game’s version is a cover (or rather: a re-interpretation) of this epic track.
But who are The Night Game, then? The Night Game is a solo project of Boys Like Girls lead singer Martin Johnson. Away from his band, he has successfully written songs for other artists, including Jason Derulo, Avril Lavigne, and Hot Chelle Rae, to name a few. Hoping to expand his own creative palette, he started an ’80s-style new wave, power pop, and adult contemporary pop-influenced project, called The Night Game.
About this slowed-down, electronic rework of the R.E.M. classic, Johnson says: “In 5th grade I wrote and recorded a song called Fast Food, basically a one minute thirty second folk punk rip-off of R.E.M.’s It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine). (…) I tried a couple more times to rewrite it. (…) I guess I couldn’t ever really get one quite as good as the original. So why not just do the original?”
