Wildcard (week 14):
Hozier – Too Sweet
With his debut single Take Me To Church, in 2023, Hozier introduced an infectious mix of blues, soul and gospel. 11 years later, this isn’t just his trademark sound, but it has also been an inspiration for other contemporary artists. In other words: his influence reaches further than the huge hit his first release became.
Last August, the Irish song smith released his third album Unreal Unearth. Last week, a companion release came out: the 4-track EP Unheard. It features four previously unreleased songs taken from the recording sessions for the album. First single Too Sweet is currently exploding on Spotify and one can hear why. It’s a wonderful song in the best Hozier tradition.
It shows the facets and multitudes of a relationship, as the singer talks to his significant other. While she prefers to lead a healthy lifestyle, he indulges in the various ‘pleasures’ of life. The singer favors the rawness because his partner is ‘already too sweet’. The song further explores the theme of how differences can evolve during a relationship.
Too Sweet by Hozier is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
