Wildcard (week 15):
Lola Young – Big Brown Eyes

Lola Young is a 23-year-old singer and songwriter from South East London who doesn’t wear her heart on her sleeve. Her star has been on the rise the last few years. Hence her nomination for the Brit Award for Rising Star in 2021. That same year, she was invited to sing on a cover version of β€˜80s classic Together In Electric Dreams for the John Lewis Christmas advert. The next year, she ended fourth in the BBC Sound Of 2022.

Young’s appeal comes from her unique style, vocals and personality. She combines honest and clever lyrics, a raw yet soulful voice and an energetic delivery. All ingredients are there to make 2024 the year of this talent’s big break-through.

Following last year’s album My Mind Wanders And Sometimes Leaves Completely, Young is now working on its follow-up. Big Brown Eyes is the fourth single to be released ahead of it. The verses have a laid-back, reggae-like feel. To give you an idea, imagine a mix of Bob Marley and The Police. In the infectious choruses however, the tempo is doubled, driven by live drums. What a banger!

Sounds like a fun song to play (and go and see) live. Well, you might be lucky. Young is currently on a European tour, and will head to the US in August to play the Lollapalooza festival.

This week, Big Brown Eyes by Lola Brown is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for full seven days.
