Wildcard (week 16):
RedHook – Breaking Up With

RedHook are lead vocalist Emmy Mack, guitarist Craig Wilkinson, drummer Alex Powys and bassist Ned Jankovic. They label themselves as β€˜screaming rap rock electro pop mutants’. Their sound has been compared to bands such as Bring Me The Horizon, Paramore and Twenty One Pilots.

The Australian rock band from Sydney formed in 2017, but only released their debut album Postcard From A Living Hell in April 2023. Since then, they’re on a roll. The year was jam-packed with their biggest ever Australian tour and many festival gigs, followed by a European tour. Nevertheless, Breaking Up With is their fourth brand-new single following the long-player.

It’s an energetic track with funk grooves, lashings of horns, heavy guitars, plenty electronic elements and huge singalong hooks. To complete the party rock vibe, it contains a fiery saxophone solo. Lyrically, the song is about letting go of self-sabotaging thoughts and self-destructive behaviour. β€˜I’m breaking up with myself’.

In the words of Emmy Mack: β€œRather than revelling in being a total piece of shit, this one is about breaking that cycle of self-hate, forgiving your past mistakes, and just deciding to be bloody kinder to yourself.”

Breaking Up With by RedHook is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, so it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
