Wildcard (week 21):
renforshort – Getting Over You

In 2019, ren (the musical alter ego of Lauren Isenberg) debuted with her single Waves. A year later, she changed her stage name to renforshort. Since then, she collaborated with numerous other artists, beside releasing her own music.

Now, the Toronto-born singer-songwriter has released her eagerly anticipated third EP Clean Hands Dirty Water. Three of its six tracks have already been put forward as singles. Getting Over You is single #4. β€˜It’s a way different vibe than any other song I’ve put out on this project’, renforshort says on her Instagram.

In an interview with Wonderland magazine the Canadian alt-pop star further elaborates about the tune. β€œI was really into this idea of writing a 70’s inspired bass forward, synth-y, piano-pop song. So, I spoke to Jeff Hazing before that session and we went over some references and ideas and came into this session with Midi Jones – who is exceptionally talented – and he perfectly captured what I wanted. We got to do a bunch of fun vocal production and experimented sounds I’d never used in my music. It felt like breath of fresh air to me.”

Although mid-tempo, Getting Over You has a high energy level. Well-crafted around her honeyed vocals, it’s catchy, melodic and yet edgy.

Getting Over You by renforshort is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
