Wildcard (week 24):
Pony – Freezer

Canada is one of the go-to countries for great new music at the moment, Pony being another fine confirmation. This Toronto-based duo consists of singer/guitarist Sam Bielanski and guitarist Matty Morand. Combining early-’90s grunge and classic indie pop, they excel in fuzzy, melodic guitar pop. Think Fountains Of Wayne,Β Juliana Hatfield or Weezer.

One year out from the release of their sophomore albumΒ Velveteen,Β The Canadian power pop darlingsΒ serve up brand-new single Freezer. It sees bassist Christian Beale and drummer Dan Leonardi join Sam and Matty for the first time, representing the band as they can be seen live. Freezer is a perfect example of Pony doing exactly what they do best. It mixes their sunny hooks with crunchy guitars, providing a sing-along alt-rock song like no other. It deals with wanting, really badly, to be someone else.

Bielanski says about the track: β€œEvery year spring comes back around and I feel like I’m supposed to experience some kind of rebirth and then I find myself unable to live up to the expectations I create for myself. It’s also a song about feeling lost in my gender identity. Never feeling like I’m able to be the girl I am expected to be because she feels like someone I don’t know.”

Freezer by Pony is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
