Wildcard (week 25):
Playlunch – Keith
You may not know Playlunch yet, but everyone knows a Keith. Or at least in Australia they do…
Let’s start at the beginning: Playlunch are an Melbourne 8-piece who came to the scene only two years ago. They’ve quickly gained a reputation with their, as they call it, ‘bogan funk’. In 2023, they went viral on TikTok with a live clip of their track Soupe Opera. A great set-up for their debut album Who’s Ready For A Good Time?
The band just released their new single Keith. A swaggering funk groove with a fantastic driving guitar riff, thumping bassline, big horns, a huge beat and a great sense of humour. The track brings on suburban World War III, describing ‘Keith’, who doesn’t like people parking in his spot. The kind of neighbour that many Australians know and hate. It’s not hard to hear this will become a live favourite and a modern Aussie classic.
Keith comes with a hilarious video with legendary Australian football player Barry Hall playing the main character. It’s the second single to be released ahead of Playlunch’s as yet-to-be-named forthcoming new album.
Keith by Playlunch is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
