Wildcard (week 25):
Pom – A Great Escape

Amsterdam band Pom takes inspiration from Britpop, punk and garage rock to create their own sound, best described as fuzzpop. They released their debut single in 2020. Since then, the band scored indie hits such as Eat Me I’m Sad, Earth Sick, Piglet, and Kim. Each of them proved that raw music can be perfectly combined with a cheerful, energetic atmosphere.

Their first album We Were Girls Together described the path to adulthood and the search for one’s own identity. It was well received, but the quintet led by front woman Liza van As hasn’t sat still since its release. This spring, they scored their biggest hit to date with Down The Rabbit Hole.

Surely, that made Pom hungry for more. It looks like they’ll get what they want, for new single A Great Escape sounds like an even bigger smash. The first taste of an EP the band is currently working on, it offers a more layered and well-defined version of Pom’s distinctive catchy and dynamic fuzzpop sound.

A Great Escape by Pom is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be inescapably positioned at the top of the blog for an entire week.
